An interesting one that came today via ebay:
Image

A Project Mercury Cape Canaveral fdc with New Concord "Home of Astronaut Glenn" added.

I would have used another Project Mercury stamp but I guess the Ohio Sesquicentennial stamp is almost as good.

Another ebay arrival although not first day:
Image
USS Haven
USS Haven (AH-12) was the lead ship of her class of hospital ships built for the U.S. Navy during World War II. Laid down as SS Marine Hawk, she was transferred from the Maritime Commission for conversion to a hospital ship, and served in that capacity through the end of the war. She was redesignated APH-112 (evacuation transport) in June 1946 for participation in Operation Crossroads, returning to her original AP-12 designation in October 1946. Haven participated in the Korean War and eventually ending her military career acting as a floating hospital in Long Beach, California.
Image
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Haven_(AH-12)
Given that the USS Haven was permanently stationed in Long Beach, it is possible that someone could have brought the Project Mercury stamp on board the ship on February 20. However is more likely the stamps were received by the ships post office between February 20 & February 26.

Has anyone seen one earlier for the USS Haven than February 26?

The cachet of cover circling the globe is similar to that of Al Van Dahl's cachet & is symbolic of John Glenn's Earth orbit.

I received this one from eBay today:
Image
Rahway NJ
Rahway is number 173 on the list of official post offices shown & above & can now be crossed off.

Whilsy Rahway is in Union County New Jersey, it is part of the New York Metropolitan area & only 20 miles southwest of downtown Manhattan & 5 miles west of Staten Island.

Another one off the list. :D

I have had these ones with this plain, but nice cachet for a little, & I had always wondered who the cachet maker was:

The one above signed by John Glenn, which arrived today via eBay, answered the question "Exclusive Covers". Now to find out who they were :!: :D

Another arrival via ebay, not fdi, however a second day cover (2dc):
Image
Someone has typed "first day of general use" on the cover, I presume meaning the first day available for normal postal usage in all post offices. However it is still a 2dc to me & because of the USPS policy of a fdi city for most issues many people collected a 2dc from their home town.

Lift off Cover, from Cape Canaveral, for Gus Grissom's flight on July 21, 1961:
Image
Selected as one of the Mercury Seven astronauts, Grissom was the pilot of the second American suborbital flight, in the Liberty Bell 7, that lasted 15 minutes and 37 seconds. He was the second American to fly in space, and the first member of the NASA Astronaut Corps to fly in space twice. He was killed along with fellow astronauts Ed White and Roger Chaffee during a pre-launch test for the Apollo 1 mission at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (then known as Cape Kennedy), Florida. He was the first of the Mercury Seven to die.

Another nice arrival via eBay:
Image
Project Mercury fdc signed by Deke Slayton.
Donald Kent "Deke" Slayton (March 1, 1924 – June 13, 1993), (Major, USAF) was an American World War II pilot, aeronautical engineer, test pilot who was selected as one of the original NASA Mercury Seven astronauts, and became NASA's first Chief of the Astronaut Office.

After joining NASA, Slayton was selected to pilot the second U.S. manned orbital spaceflight, but was grounded in 1962 by atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm. He then served as NASA's Director of Flight Crew Operations, making him responsible for crew assignments at NASA from November 1963 until March 1972. At that time he was granted medical clearance to fly, and was assigned as the docking module pilot of the 1975 Apollo–Soyuz Test Project, at age 51 becoming the oldest person to fly in space at the time. This record was surpassed in 1983 by 54-year-old William E. Thornton, 59-year-old (and fellow ASTP crew member) Vance Brand in 1990, 61-year-old Story Musgrave in 1996, and in 1998 by Slayton's fellow Project Mercury astronaut John Glenn, who at the age of 77 flew on Space Shuttle mission STS-95.

Slayton died at the age of 69 on June 13, 1993, from a malignant brain tumor.

Another example of the "Exclusive" cover cachet:

The stiffener card was inserted in this one but I strongly doubt that Edward Fish was the man behind Exclusive Covers, I think he was just the man on the spot for postmarking.

Another one from eBay:

Franklin Square New York.
Franklin Square is a hamlet & census-designated place (CDP) in Nassau County, New York, & is an unincorporated area in the Town of Hempstead.

It also was not one of the original 305 Post Offices. :)

Last one from eBay tonight:
Image
Falls Church VA - machine slogan "New Hope For Hearts - Support The Heart Fund."
Falls Church is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia & was one of the original 305 post offices, so we can cross number 288 off our want list above.

Another arrival via eBay, this time with two postmarks for the price of one:
Image
Image
Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Appears it missed the cancel on the first time & went through a second time when noticed by a postal clerk. So we can "Use Zone Numbers for Better Mail Service" while we "Pray for Peace".

In the meantime we can remove number 110 from the list above.

A recent acquisition of mine for my Project Mercury collection via eBay:
Image
Scott #3261 $3.20 Priority Mail Self Adhesive "Shuttle Landing" postmarked November 9, 1998 at Troy, New York.

The cachet by Fred Collins depicts the original seven Project Mercury Astronauts - Carpenter, Cooper, Glenn, Grissom, Schirra, Shepard & Slayton.
