Yes indeed the ratings and often lower grade officerd would spend long hours chipping away at the ice that formed on the superstructure and railings lest the ship became top heavy and turned turtle. Immersion in the subzero Arctic waters gave the sailors less than 5-10 minutes of survival from hypothermia.
Oops, I tell a lie! 'Tisn't from the HMS Belfast but from someone aboard the HMS Berwick instead.

The HMS Berwick was a heavy cruiser of the British Royal Navy. Note how many of the Royal Navy censor markings don't seem to include a date – I suspect this was done on purpose? In any case, in 1941 she was deployed with escort for Convoy PQ4, arriving at Murmansk on November 27. She continued patrolling Icelandic waters in the new year, and deployed with squadrons at Scapa Flow, Scotland.

Excellent thread Waffle.

Just right for a browse and maybe an elevation of some of the many stamps that lay ignored for eons in a stock book.

I suspect many have such stocks and this thread inspired me to open up a few I have.

The odds and sods, relatively unsorted.

As a start here are 2 pages of stamps that were plucked and hence took my eye, for various reasons, as I delved.

The Christmas 1971 stamps in the above post are the work of Emvin Cremona, an artist who was responsible for designing many of Malta's stamps (including two definitive sets) between the late 1950s and the early 1980s.

Cremona's designs are quite distinctive and in my opinion his impact on Maltese stamp design has never really been surpassed.

The original artwork for those stamps remains the property of MaltaPost, and it was recently exhibited at the Malta Postal Museum.

An instant reward as to information HalfpennyYellow!

The Malta stamp designs, as a continuum, certainly rank high in terms of quality and artistic content.

It's for the 250th anniversary of the State Lottery:

The first draw of the Staatsloterij was in the Ridderzaal in The Hague in the year 1726. Then called the Generality Lottery, with a top prize of 30,000 guilders. A considerable capital at that time.

There was a proliferation of lotteries at that time. The State felt responsible for ensuring that this was done fairly. All illegal lotteries were curbed and the State Lottery was born. This makes the Staatsloterij the oldest lottery in the Netherlands. In fact, it is one of the world's oldest lotteries.

The saying on the left of the cover says: "Zonder geluk vaart niemand wel" which translates as "Without luck no one sails well" As a nation of seafarers it's a quite logical saying.
Collecting interests:
Soccer theme, Netherlands and overseas territories, GB, Channel Islands and older used (Tuck's) postcards.

Sorry to say this Waffle, but the sheet inscribed 'Rwanda' is an illegal issue. I hope you didn't payed too much.

Every time I see an illegal issue on Stampboards I feel obligated to mention this. To educate and warn collectors about these kind of issues. Something the philatelic press and most dealers are not doing...

BTW FYI I've got the circular Tongan foil look-alikes (that aren't records) on an FDC if you want it. Pretty sure that's what it is. Gold coinage commemoration, I think. Send me a message if you're interested. No idea why I have it. Talk about odd and sod!

Well if you don't need it and Puffin doesn't want it, I would be delighted to have it as Tonga falls well within my collecting areas.

I will take a wild guess that with the number and variety of stamps printed for Nepal, either they were hoping to mint cash from Collectors or there was a dramatic increase in literacy in Nepal in the 1960s and 1970s.
