Hi until now I have only been an observer on your sight and have gained a lot of very useful knowledge. I primarily collect pre 1940 but have to edit my collection as it is overwhelming at times.

Sheriff: Thanks, but I'll pass. Photobucket has already had at least one breach of "private" accounts. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before the next one.

You could wait for the avatar fairy to give you one, I know she is very busy at the moment but she is very good at what she does. I'd love to see what she would pick for you.

Brummie: To be honest, although I was interested in adding an avatar, I was more interested in alternate means of uploading scans of stamps about which I might have questions. It looks like that's not going to be a feature of Stampboards for me. Since I won't be uploading my own avatar, I, too, am interested in what the avatar fairy might choose for me. No rush, though.

Re: Avatars, or picture images to go under your handle: 'HOW
Hi there
I'd very much like to take part in some of your excellent forum discussions about stamps - esp engraved beauties. With that in mind, I've been trying for the last two days to upload an avatar, and to understand how to upload photos to posts. I cannot understand the system at all.
I have opened a photobucket account, but there is no guidance that I can find on the photobucket site to tell me how to do anything. I can upload photos, but cannot work out how to resize them or reduce the resolution to the appropriate pixel count, or whatever the terminology is for the resolution size of the image, as opposed to the physical dimensions - height and width.
I then googled to get advice on how to use photobucket - but haven't yet found any clear guidance about reducing the resolution - just lots of people saying how easy everything is.
I've browsed through your rules and the threads telling us how to load avatars and photos, and they all say loud and clear "use photobucket, it works for everyone else and it's easy". But it isn't easy - it's far from easy. When I get a pic uploaded, and go into the "editor" area, all I can do is change the physical dimensions - and even then, when I try to place the image on stampboard as an avatar, I get told the URL is invalid.
By the way, your rules say very clearly that I should go to the My Profile button at the top of every page - but there isn't a My profile button anywhere on any page - not until you find "user control panel". It took me quite a time to find that out.
I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Hi Strider
Sorry to hear you are having problems loading your avatar. I'll have a look at the instructions and refine them a bit when I get a spare moment but in the meantime if you want to email me your preferred image I'll pop that up for you

I have been collecting since 1963 and love cinderellas and perfins as well as postage stamps. I am secretary and life member of my stamp club. I subscribe to several philatelic journals as they are a great source of information. I mostly use Michel on line catalogue for my world collection. I live in the Riverina area of NSW and I am enjoying my retirement. Other interests are collecting beer cans and brewerianna and rail heritage.

This may sound like an odd request, but the avatar provided to me at the moment is a stamp found by a good friend of mine (the third copy of the Canada 2 cent Large Queen on laid paper, Scott #32, thus my handle) and I feel a bit silly using it. I did have a hand in the expertization of the stamp, but perhaps an administrator could change it for me thanks.

Hello, I started collection US stamps as a youth. Became interested in South East Asia because of a college history course and collected for a time in the 60's and 70's. Primarily interested in updating my Laos collection. I work in spurts on the collection often spending too much or too little time on it. I am a retired United Methodist pastor and found this by browsing the internet. I am also interested in outdoor garden railroads.

I am SO new I can't even get ahold of an administrator. I'm fairly tech savvy but none of the options appear because I just joined two days ago &, apparently, "some" administrator is supposed to send an email to help activating my account. Can't do anything until then.... Will someone please acknowledge my existence, I'm lonely out here

I think your photo may have too high resolution. Try lower resolution.

I suspect it may be that the image you are trying to upload is too large, either in terms of the number of pixels or the size of the file.
The maximum values are 165 x 165 pixels with a limit on the filesize of 75 KB.

TimPybyr,
Click the down arrow (next to your username located at top right). Select the User Control Panel link.
Once in User Control Panel, select the "Profile" tab which is to the right of the "Overview" tab.
Now, select "Edit avatar" from the (left) side navigation bar. There you can upload your avatar.
Please remember that your avatar image must have these maximum dimensions; Width: 165 pixels, Height: 165 pixels, File Size: 73.00 KiB.
I hope that this helps.

Hello AMark, yes I understand it was not really relevant to the original thread topic.
I asked that question there as I was surprised that my image had suddenly changed from a penny black to penny red, after someone had noted how similar it was to CMJs. (I understand it was not relevant to the thread discussion, sorry).
But anyway, I assume someone has changed it, but am not sure if it is really necessary?? This is a stamp forum after all, and it’s not too surprising that multiple people might choose a penny black as their image...
I quite liked the stamp I had chosen, am I allowed to change it back or would that be an issue?
Cheers Wentworth

Re: Avatars, or picture images to go under your handle: 'HOW TO'
You commented yourself in that thread (which was totally off-topic) that your 1d black avatar was near identical to several others on the thread, and thought you might change it. And went off-topic again on the same tangent.
I agree if we had 22,000 members with GB 1d black avatars it would be absurd. There are literally a MILLION other possibilities.
I changed it to a bluish MX, on a 1d red that you bought -
