USA Scott #TD 129, 1996 BCA perf test Parrot Serpentine die cut stamp?

Post by Marko69 »

Hello,

Does anyone know where I might find a U.S. Scott #TD 129, 1996 BCA perf test Parrot Serpentine die cut test stamp? The design size is 25x40mm with "c 1995 GSSC" across the bottom and "Scrambled Indicia" up right side. (see stamp photo below) Any help would be appreciated!

Best regards,
Marko

I only know of one example of TD129 in collector hands. There should be more since it was produced as a sheet stamp (probably a pane of 40).

The other Parrot test stamp (TD128) is available from at least one dealer (I still have a few copies if you need it). TD128 came in a sheet of 50.

Update - TD128 was originally found in sheets of 50 (5 x 10), but in 2012 a smaller size 20-stamp sheet (4 x 5) was discovered. The stamps appear identical (same gauge of serpentine die cuts, etc.), but the widths of the sheet's outside margins was different.

I am still looking for an example of TD129 - please let me know if you have one for sale or trade.

It’s been ten years since I wrote the above posts - and I now must accept the fact I must be going blind! A “serious” collector of test stamps would have known the image on the Parrot stamp shown in the first posting was NOT Scott TD129. Look at the bottom of that stamp and you can see the large initials GSCC” printed above the “00” valuation (plus a smaller “1995 GSSC” printed to the right of the valuation). Then, look at the Scott Catalogue for an image of Scott TD129 (also shown below) - it has a large “BCA” printed above the valuation (it also has “1995 GSSC”printed to the right of the valuation). Thus, there are two similar Parrot test stamps to look for besides the TD128 Parrot stamps. Does anybody know anything about those two rare test stamps?

Not my cup o'Tea. I decided to ask Google.

There are multiple matches both for BCA and GSSC, but likely explanations in printing context are two:

BCA: Banknote Corporation of America
A government contractor for secure printing of papers, including postage stamps.

GSSC: Graphic Security Systems Corporation
Another government contractor for document security solutions.
Italian Social (Not Socialist  ) Republic Postal History

Number-O-Ne: You are correct on both counts.

“BCA” is Banknote Corporation of America - they are a private company that printed U.S. postage’s stamps at that time.

“GSSC” is the Graphic Security System Corporation that was founded in 1981. When I wrote the original post, I was simply trying to point out there were two different Parrot test stamps… I now realize there were three varieties, so I updated the post earlier today. I used just the abbreviations printed on the test stamps to keep thing simple.

GSSC created a technique to print hidden or scrambled words in the stamp design in an effort to identify counterfeit stamps. Today, U.S. passports contain scrambled printing that help officials identify fake passports.

I’m sorry if I confused anyone.
