Did you order through amazon.ca or amazon.com? If it's the former, maybe their pre-order rules are different? If it's the latter definitely try raising hell with them over the guarantee!

That's a nice looking book as well, and a bargain price! Well spotted.

Just a reminder:
erich wrote: 25 May 2023 19:38 If you mostly collect pre-1940 (or pre-1953 British Colonies) the Scott Classic Specialized Catalogue is a worthwhile reference. The bad thing is it retails for US$179 and is seldom discounted much.

Even when several years old, people get $100+ for them. I don't know why, but Amazon is letting you pre-order the 2024 edition (will be released in mid-November) for $53.99 i.e. 70% off.

This is unheard of. Amazon doesn't charge for pre-orders until shipping, so I don't see how this could be a scam -- if the product turns out to not be available, you won't get charged for it. Have a go at getting one on the cheap if you need it...

Incidentally, if you want to avoid shadows and reflections when using your smartphone - force the flash on. It works, without being too much glare.

I think the 5AM lighting (I work nights) and the shrink wrap on the book are responsible for the glare.

I'm glad this was a legit offer and many of you are getting the books. Beats the $150-160 they're selling for now.

I'm still in disbelief! We'll never know, of course, but I wonder what happened to make it be listed at such a discount? You never see the specialized Scott catalogs this heavily marked down; out-of-date alphabetical catalogs are a dime-a-dozen, but even the out-of-date Scott Classic tends to retail over $100.

I can't explain where this offer came from -- it was listed as "Fulfilled by Amazon" and arrived in one of their generic cardboard book wrappers, with no indication of where they got it. Never seen anything like it for the current edition -- sometimes you find a deal on eBay or a third-party seller on Amazon for one that is a few years old. Conversely, sometimes you see someone inexplicably get $100 for a 10-year old edition.

The US Specialized is also annoyingly expensive most of the time.

You can piece together the 12 "regular" books on Amazon pretty reasonably if you have the patience to order each pair of books separately, and don't mind them being a couple years out of date. Note: In 2018, Scott split the traditional 6 volumes into 12, so you have 1A, 1B through 6A & 6B. Make sure the reseller is offering both the A & B in their deal.

This all assumes you're ordering from the US. These books are heavy and I don't know of any obvious way to avoid the insane international postage costs.

Yeah, my order was from .ca and there was no doubt - straight up cancelled.

Never thought about shifting to . Com for this.

Oh well, just not meant to be. Asked my supplier about my cost to order from them and I didn’t!!! Wow.

Hi
No news yet from Amazon and the order is still marked as «Not yet shipped».

Is there any way to contact them? I can find no link to a chat line nor any phone number. Even though I'm in Canada, I placed the order through the US site and it's not a problem if I can only find a US phone number.

Memphre
The number I've found useful in the past is their general customer service line: +1 (888) 240-4331. US-based, obviously, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem given the US/Canada use the same numbering system and plan. At one point there was a separate international line, but again I don't think you should have an issue here. :)

(Admins, if posting this # is not allowed, my apologies--I didn't see anything in the rules about sharing a publicly listed corporate number!)

I had the bad idea of contacting Amazon Customer Service.

All they came up with after three tries and 2 hours and speaking with various representatives, likely India-based from their pseudos, and 3 supervisors was to cancel the sale and tell me they would refund any price difference but would not furnish any kind of assurance of that, while they argued the listing did not allow for shipping outside the USA though there was no such indication at the time of the original listing.

A thoroughly frustrating experience.

They are non empowered, Indian/Bangladesh Robo idiots.

The entire function of those places is to patiently and politely wear you down, and do nothing, and promise everything - that never occurs of course. Their time is worth 10% of what my time is worth, and they know it. We all cave in eventually, and hang up. Two hours of your time lost forever.

I usually email to save a LOT of time - Amazon.com.au <[email protected]

I ordered and received a month back, and I am not in the USA, so as usual, their response is nonsense. Very slightly higher shipping than for the USA orders, but it was still VERY cheap.

I'm glad Amazon came through on these for so many people! While I knew they wouldn't rip you off (since they only charge for pre-orders when they ship) I wasn't sure if they were actually going to get any stock in at this price (or get 3 of them and cancel everyone else). You never know unless you try...
