Help needed to add border around these jpg images in photoshop etc

Post by OttawaMike »

I am working on a page in my project about civil censorship in Canada during WW1. There were a variety of handstamps used, and I am trying to reproduce these. Most of the time, this is not a problem.

However, the program I am using does not let me create a box into which to insert the image that is less than 5mm in height.

Because of this, I have 4 images which get resized to a greater height.

I can work around this simply by adding a border so that the visible image will be the correct height.

This is my problem. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to do this in Photoshop.

These are the 4 jpeg files:
1916 19x3mm.jpg
1916 32x3.5mm.jpg
1916 36x4mm.jpg
1916 57x3mm.jpg
I would appreciate some help with this. Either instructions, or ideally if someone who is familiar with Photoshop can download these images and add a border. White preferred, but I can always erase a colour to get white. The size of the border is not critical because I can crop to get it right.

Thanks for any assistance! :D :D :D

Sadly, I am dumber than dirt with graphic programs, and can never use them. I can't even add a straight line to an image!

I only have the 20 year old free google Picasa one, that all my images go into for editing. It is free, and dead simple, and has always worked well for tech dummies like me -

https://picasa-win.com/platforms/windows-11/

That very basic program allows you to add borders to whatever you like with 1 click, and change the thickness and colour and corners etc, ad infinitum in seconds.

This kind of stuff below takes seconds - is this what you are trying to do for the CENSORED wording?

You can make the final size whatever width you prefer of course. Or maybe I have misread what you are aiming to do?

That's exactly what I need, Glen! :D :D

Size does not matter as I can crop to fit.

Worth downloading for free and playing with -

https://picasa-win.com/platforms/windows-11/

I know many here have advanced graphics programs, and I am in awe of the final results they come up with, with overlays etc, but I am too dumb to master that stuff.

But for simple stuff, PICASA has always worked superbly for me.

Thanks, Glen. I will try that, though I still have Windows 10.

I should have been more clear in my last post - it is the one with the white border that I am looking for.

Mike, PICASA has been around for so long, you can probably get floppy disc downloads still!

It appears to work on all sort of Windows versions going back to when Bill Gates was in college - have no idea if it works on Apple products .. an alien field to tech dopes like me!

Like all simple and useful things, the Tech Geeks at Google have moved right along 'and no longer support it' as it makes them no money ... but it still works perfectly for me anyway.

Mike, how are you making your pages, in Photoshop, Word, Publisher?
In Word its just use a text box, copy, paste and choose and outline (or no outline) and resize to suit

In Photoshop there are multiple layers available, and one way of creating a border is to use them.

1. Create a rectangle as big as you want including the border.

2. Fill it with black.

3. Create a slightly smaller rectangle

4. Fill it with white.

5. Drag the white area over the black area and centre it and you have a border.

5a. Or copy and paste it, whichever is easy.

6. Copy your text jpg over the white area.

7. Resize it if you were working on a larger format for clarity.

8. Save as a jpg.

8a. On some versions you may have to flatten it first.

OK, I officially declare myself a complete idiot. There otta be a prize for that.

Allanswood - I use a program called Albumgen by EZStamp. As the name implies, is designed for creating album pages, but it is essentially a word processing program set up to simplify that process. It is much easier to use than Word, for example, but it has limited features. I generally do not need the complicated stuff anyway, and I make do. I use it for album pages, exhibits and book manuscripts. I use Word for articles, but I leave it to the editors to do the formatting.

Glen: I downloaded Picasa, and my head hurts trying to figure this out. The first thing the program did is download all of my files - thousands upon thousands of them - and changed the order so it takes quite a while to find what I want to modify. When I found one, I could not figure out how to add a border. Like I said, an idiot.

Satsuma - If more proof was needed of my complete idiot status, I get lost at your step 1. Thanks for trying, though.

I hate to be a pain, and Stampboarders have certainly come to my rescue too many times to count over the years, but if anyone has the time to add borders to the three images (Glen graciously did one) I will be most grateful. :D

Now that I know the limit on the box size in Albumgen, I will not crop things so close when dealing with small images. I suppose I could go back and recreate these from scratch with appropriate borders, but that takes up to an hour for each one. :(

Thanks, Kainnikanada! :D

That is what I am looking for, but perhaps a border a bit wider - maybe 50% more that what you show here. It's easy for me to make it smaller if it is larger than I need.

Much appreciated!!! :D :D :D

That took all of a minute to download, reopen and add a border.

Not sure why no one could explain the simplicity or just complete the task.

No problem. I can email you the results. Shortly.

Yes. Kainnikanada was helpful and he deserves your thanks, but ... did you learn enough so that you can do it yourself next time?

It's the old give someone a fish, versus teach them how to fish, comparison.

Actually not, though I understand your point well.

Instead, I learned how to avoid the problem in future. :D
