Dont congratulate me yet.

The auction I purchased it from (Leski) has a major issue with the listing and I might not have what I thought I had!

The description is a mix of details for the rare 1941 cover and the far less rare 1942 covers. The cat numbers are for 1941 and the quantities flown are for the 1941 covers, but the rest of the description and the illustration are for the 1942 covers!!!!!

At this stage I am disputing the sale as I would not have paid top dollar for the 1942 set.

More to follow!

Ha, Leski clearly has the wrong AAMC numbers but the illustrated colour cover is easily seen to be signed by Crowther, ie the 1942 cover.

The OP might need to take a few photos of the actual item he wants

No need to shout Alan.

Be sure to have photos so you can be sure the item is the correct one.

So for the sloe reeders, this image Alan posted above, does not work for you, for some reason?

Mail him this, and he'll pay you $700. Clear enough?

You missed my point, if that is the cover he wants, why did he bid on something else that was clearly displayed and looked nothing like it

Because again for the sloee reeders there were clearly TWO covers in the lot, the other was not illustrated.

It sold for $1,680 invoice on start bid $560, so clearly there was intense bidding from 2 or more persons. So others presumably assumed it was the scarce one?

I had coffee with AlanLogue last week in Adelaide, and he is no fool - I assume the other cover in the lot was what he sought?

Seems like Leski's screwed up here. They are lazy with scans -- they omitted to add a reverse scan of this interesting cover I noticed they also sold when searching for lot link to the Mornington - that was invoiced for near $1,000 - got 4 times estimate.

I sold it to a dealer here a few months back for $A400 -

These Qantas Mornington Island Parachute Mail covers and labels to the Methodist Mission there during WW2, are rather complicated.

I've sold a heap of them in the past year from nice collections I bought from 2 ex Qantas Pilots. One of who bought, or was given a ton of stuff, by his friend Sir Hudson Fysh - the Qantas founder and long time Chairman.

This strange one I sold recently for $475 complicates the dates -

Image

A MLH original gum copy of the scare 1943 Mornington Island Parachute mail to the Mission there, with the '1942' overprint in error for the correct '1943'.

Frommer and AAMC tell us only FIFTEEN (15) of this overprint error were ever done, 80 years back - and the other 500 had the usual '1943' o/p on the Bright Green labels.

It appears none of these were used on the covers.

Indeed, near all the 500 labels printed were used on covers, so MINT labels are clearly scarcer than covers, and should be priced a good deal higher.

Frommer 60f2, cat $600 - 20 years back. The '1943' are cat $100 and nice ones fetch that, so as the '1942' is 33 times less common, they really should be cat $3,000 apiece, not $A600!

Never had one in 45 years of dealing. And never even seen one offered!

My complication on this auction was trying to do it on my phone and without access to my collection of covers.

I've now downloaded my entire cover collection in a pdf file to my phone so I can view it whenever I need to - this process has been a learning process for me.

I do have AAMC 935 embedded in my brain along with Sydney and the quantity of 28, and that was what got my juices flowing!!!!

I now have a blue vignette newly embedded in my brain for the next time.

Leski's have been fine with cancelling the bid and admitting the description was incorrect, so no real harm done, other than my own frustration.

I will just keep thinking 935, Sydney, 28, blue!!!!!!!!
