Duck Pond's Creek/Lara Lake Cancels. Are they out there?

Post by fromdownunder »

OK, I have a confession. Some of the threads here have expanded my interest somewhat, and very early cancels from what is now beautiful downtown Lara interest me.

So, if there is any record of Duck Pond's Creek/Lara Lake Hovell's Creek, even Cheddar on postmarks, I would love to see some. And if they do, what is the rarity rating? I would imagine that Lara Lake would be rated as common.

Obviously no scans, because I have nothing to scan, and have never even seen one. And stop trying to convert me towards Postmarks!

Norm

Stiff cheddar on "Cheddar" as there does not seem to be a post office by that name on PPA. :(

A bit more luck on Lara Lake as PPA have a barred numeral there for sale for $3.00. :) Go for it :!:

Just stumbled upon into this thread for the first time this morning, hence my now rather belated reply to Norm's old thread – RIP dear old chum. For the record, FYI y'all, there is a whole philatelic (exhibit) display of Lara, Little River & Duck Pond postmarks at the local Lara Museum. Just off the highway after the Avalon Airport exit, near the You Yangs, if anyone happens to drop past on their way down towards Geelong and the Surf Coast.
Where on earth is Lara? A little history of Lara

According to the records on Phoenix Auction's archives, Hovell's Creek PO opened on 19/11/1874 before the Lara Lake datestamp appeard from 22/11/1880 (#1205 as a barred numeral I believe).

While we've had the current 'LARA' datestamp since late June, 1994, there was one used in the late nineteenth century. This is currently for sale on the Shields' Stamps website (listed for $80):

Here's another interesting find on eBay currently: an 1899 cover from Hampstead, addressed to the local Angelican minister at the Holy Trinity Vicarage in Lara. You can still attend church there today on Sundays, or visit their Op-Shop every other day.

Meanwhile, a few kms up the road – not sure what the difference is between LPO and PO – but the Little River LPO continues to this day, I believe.

When Lara was known in the early days as DUCK POND, apparently they had more than one canceller but I note in an old post of McGooley's that the Duck Pond numeral cancellation #181 with two side bars is rated RRRRR. Can't find an example online, nor do I have one, but I do remember seeing a few at the local Lara Museum here.

Not to be confused with Duck Pond Creek which is – I believe – actually a town with a good pub up in New South Wales.

'Little River Band is an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne in 1975 and named after a road sign for the Victorian township of Little River, near Geelong. They were the first Australian rock group to enjoy sustained commercial success in the United States. During their career the band have sold more than 25 million records and scored 13 American Top 40 hits.

While fronted by singer John Farnham from 1982–1986, the band’s original members were Glenn Shorrock (vocals), Graeham Goble, Beeb Birtles and Ric Formosa (guitars and vocals), Roger McLachlan (bass) and Derek Pellicci (drums).'

Hah! Didn't realise that the Little River Band was named after the one and only Little River. What a small world!

They have an excellent pub, by the way, with massive chicken parmas, beef ribs e.t.c. if anyone is en route from Melbourne to the Surf Coast. However, be sure to book a day or two in advance because, being small, they fill up quick!

BigSaint – any idea what the MCC stands for in those early Lara Lake postmarks?

Ben, if you know any schoolteachers, ask them to google - 'MCC numeral'.

The answer has been the same for well over 2000 years.

Nice! 8-) Those with mail from me will likely have recent LARA postmarks – when I remember to get them stamped and not just shove them into the red letter box!

Here's an old one from Little River again – FYI available from Phoenix Auctions for AUD$20 excluding buyer fees e.t.c.
175 on 4d Beaded Oval: Allocated to Little River-PO 1/2/1858
175 on 4d Beaded Oval: Allocated to Little River-PO 1/2/1858
Is it just me, or does this postmark look somewhat oval in shape, rather than the circular type we've posted here before? Haven't seen this one yet.
oval 'LITTLE RIVER/FE-2/80/VICTORIA' tied alongside BN '175' (B2) on 2d Bell on small cover, octagonal 'DOWN TRAIN/M.G.2/FE2/80/VICTORIA' (A1) backstamp, to Geelong

Hmm, maybe I should start collecting these things? This one went on some fun little local travels and is quite appealing thus:
ANAKIE/JE1/00/VICTORIA' alongside '227' cancelling indicia of 1d Postal Card to Little River, Geelong transit on face, Meredith duplex & Little River datestamp on back. [Rated 3R]

Here's a much older cover, dated 1863. You can just make out a very vague '175' on the 6d black stamp, but a clearer oval shaped 'Little River' backstamp on the reverse.
'LITTLE RIVER/AU18/63/VICTORIA' backstamp on cover to Sydney
'LITTLE RIVER/AU18/63/VICTORIA' backstamp on cover to Sydney

This second postal card is useful because the strikes are very clear and distinct, even after 136 years!
unframed 'LITTLE RIVER/DE4/88/VICTORIA' (ERD) on face of Postal Card & fine '175'
unframed 'LITTLE RIVER/DE4/88/VICTORIA' (ERD) on face of Postal Card & fine '175'
1888 little river.jpeg
Both are currently on offer thanks to Phoenix for rather a conservative value.

As for something entirely different, this is a registered cover FROM Lara all the way to what was once a French colonial region in northern Vietnam VIA both Sydney and Hong Kong. Very unusual destinations, I would assume!

What does the '16' refer to here?

I wonder, was China into buying Australian wool at the time? The Lara, Geelong, Anakie and Ballarat region has traditionally been popular with sheep graziers.

And another Little River 2011 postmark:
Little River postmark 3211.jpg
Date on Circular Date Stamp postmark:
    27 ??R 2??? (almost certainly 27 MAR 2006)
Dot Matrix postmark:
    PROCESSED 531 29MAR???06
Most dot matrix postmarks include the ID number of the Australia Post sorting facility, 531 in this example. I have seen IDs ranging from 503 to 552. Can anybody tell me how to identify postal facilities by their ID numbers? Some dot matrix postmarks have the name of the facility e.g. "PERTH MAIL CENTRE" or "HOBART MC" and no ID, and a few have the initials of the mail centre plus the ID, e.g. "SWLF ML537", "DLC530", "HMC541", but most have only the ID number. I think HMC stands for Hobart Mail Centre and SWLF for South West Letter Facility somewhere in New South Wales, but some I cannot work out, like DLC (somewhere in Victoria).
