Nearly as clever as getting a stamp with an emu on it & saying it's an ostrich. Even though it says EMU on the stamp.....

I bet that winner347 never dreamt that there were so many willing to bid on this monstrosity.
No wonder he/she doesn't accept returns.

The bidders clearly do not know their subject!

Even without the problem with the letters it just does not look right.

I'm guessing it's been dipped in some tea too

I tried reporting it and mentioned the check letters but the eBay AI bot still couldn't find any issue with the listing :D

I think I've had enough of Ebay, certainly as far as GB revenues. Its been poor for a while but today I do a search and this is the start of the listings:
Speechless !
Speechless !
Its not just the damn Wildings at 20,000 times their value which is getting worse and worse (and no they aren't all from the same dreamer).

No point linking just one, just go to the main listing (https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524 ... 99&_sop=16).

OK, so I hit highest price first by accident - but really !

Please forgive me if this is a VERY basic question, but what's the problem with the check letters? Is the combination impossible? (I've never even attempted classic GB, so I am a total and complete novice at it!)

Zach = polisciguy2011, this sheet layout shows there was no "M" column (20x12 = TxL)!

:D
The 20x12 sheet layout for the 1840 QV Penny Black was chosen to conveniently fit Sterling currency.
1 shilling = 12 pence, so each row of the sheet was one shilling's worth of stamps.
1 pound = 20 shillings, so the 20 rows comprising the whole sheet were one pound's worth of stamps.
A pound was a very significant amount of money, so the ordinary customer would not be buying a pound's worth of stamps (even a shilling's worth of stamps would have been more than usual).
But the post office employees would have had to "reconcile" their cash holdings and stamp holdings at the end of each day, and the calculation of the remaining stamp holdings would have been greatly aided by the relationship between the currency and the sheet format.

And if that was an average price and quality for his purchases he's maybe chucked £50,000 down the drain.

So those on the IOM stamp are "life-size"? That was asking for trouble, regardless of the check letters.

The background is also quite different. Anyone who is planning to buy a penny black would be able to spot it with just a little research before committing their money. The sad part is that the one sold is such a mess, it doesn't even look unused. Any reasonable dealer could have supplied a fine used example for the price it brought. The seller still has three more from the sheet to offer to the underbidders.

His most recent feedback shows that we know this scammer already ; he is zrauction, formerly zarauction, aka lilly8281. The latter ID appears now to be blocked from selling, though inexplicably not yet NARUd.
Capture - winner feedback.JPG
This is the same buyer with 11000+ feedbacks who previously left negatives on the other two accounts. It's a shame that this wasn't marked as a negative, because making it a neutral means that this ID's feedback rating remains at 100%.

We could say that about any similar reproduction, but the Isle of Man post office shouldn’t be criticised.

For US $10,000 you can buy a grubby US revenue stamp with a rounded corner. It is affixed to a CDV that is in even worse shape than the stamp. Somehow, the seller doesn't mention that the stamp catalogues for 40¢, but he has quite a write-up for the item.

ID winner347 has now made his feedback private, so he can't sell via that ID. This ID jadarvis_0 is clearly the same person, with several prior sales of his typical faked overprints and "proofs".

Oh, dear! It isn't just eBay. Some of the dreamers on Facebook Marketplace really take the cake. At least this would-be-seller admits to knowing nothing about them.
