Re: Perforation errors - share you
Thanks guys - so there were two elements, an extra strike by the comb and the comb not advancing as far as normal (probably because it was impeded by the edge of the plate or something associated with it?).

The sheets would have been bundled for perforation. When you think about it, there probably was something to keep them in place as they were violated by the perforator!nigelc wrote:Thanks guys - so there were two elements, an extra strike by the comb and the comb not advancing as far as normal (probably because it was impeded by the edge of the plate or something associated with it?).

So yes, as good an explanation as any as to why the comb did not advance it's normal distance.

I must say, I find these misplaced and double perforations a bit thin ...
Now Travancore, and its successor Travancore-Cochin, knew how to do a perforation error:

Travancore-Cochin SG O10fc
and for good measure, here's an unlisted error:

On the principle that you can never have too much of a good thing,

Travancore-Cochin SG O11cd, and

Travancore-Cochin SG 11bb
But wait, there's more:

Travancore-Cochin SG O6da and

And that's hardly scratching the surface of the surface of the riches available in Travancore and Travancore-Cochin

The die-cut perfs on self-adhesives can also go wrong. This should be captioned Worldwide:

Comes from a book of 4:

Of course it's not just the die-cut that's wrong as the stamps are closer to the top than to the bottom edge of the book.

Re: Perforation errors - share your images here
I have shown this elsewhere (once or twice) but it belongs here as well.
There was a major problem that occurred when perforating the sheet this block comes from. Obvious double perfs at base. However, the entire second last row (and the bottom right stamp) have been removed and other stamps inserted. Imagine how bad the removed stamps must have looked!
A classic example of 'waste not, want not' in early Australian stamp production.

I should have posted this stunner earlier - it's in another 'newsy' thread, but deserves its place here as well:

It's actually hanging together by the horizontal perfs - sadly not mine, but images sent by a reader.

A few examples from Soviet-occupied Germany.
If they look familiar, I've shown some of these on another thread, but they belong equally here:
This one is on one of the Berlin-Brandenberg "Bears", resulting in the inscription appearing at the bottom of the stamp. This is really a "Misroul" as it is misplaced rouletting, not perforation...

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The children's charity stamp on the left has two additional lines of perfs in the top margin.
The Land Reform and Rebuilding stamps to the right are both examples of the vertical perforations being badly misplaced and "cut to shape".

Hello here is one I think a bit interesting,

I`m not to concerned with the left and right sides {Edward scissor hands at work ?}.
But you can clearly see on the top the frame of the next stamp , so I would have assumed the Bottom Perf to have been in the same area ???, So how/why did they get so high.
Regards

It is the marginal line, not another stamp (you can see that the green line is continuous and doesn't fit into the same space as teh stamp). Given how far away the top perfs are I suspect there was a jump in the comb. Pity the vertical perfs are missing!

Thanks for that Peter ,
Yes I see what you mean by the line now that you mention it , and yes it is a pity about the vertical perfs , I dont think the right side has been cut but more just brutally torn off , left side definitely a scissor job.
Never mind put it in the weird and wonderful box

Thanks Greg ,
Well I did ask if it was "A" done thing or not , a simple yes or no would have been sufficient .
I can see the reasons why not, if a crook is selling it but if it was defined as such I personally can`t see a problem , like a repaired stamp and duly marked as such .
But I will no doubt cop it .

Re: Perforation errors - share your images here

We live in a strange world with stamps. Perfect centred get big money. Well off centre so that perfs touch 1 or 2 sides get a half of that. Yet go even more off centre and it becomes a "perf freak" - and it sells for MORE than well centred! Often many times more.
We have here an unusual "JUMBO" stamp. A nice looking stamp with a MASSIVE margin at base. The Americans call these "JUMBOS" and they sell for much more than an ordinary copy.
Clean and fresh, and appeared to me to be MUH original gum at first glance, but probably has once had a light hinge touch.
https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=17921
I've priced it for less than a normal centred hinged stamp. A great piece of striking eye-candy for the specialist.

Just received this one

Cochin SG 117a - imperf between in a horizontal pair
Unlike next-door neighbour Travancore, this type of perforation error is quite uncommon from Cochin. At a rather more humble level, it also shows a missing perforation pin in both rows of perfs.

Perforating was, relative to modern methods, primitive. That is why you get variability in size of stamps that are obviously with original, genuine, perfs.Allanswood wrote:Peter, is this what you mean by a jump in the comb to make a stamp larger?![]()
