My English, GB & UK Horse Racing Cover Collection.

Post by BigSaint »

Hi Guys

You have seen a few of my horse racing covers from around the place, Melbourne Cup, Kentucky Derby, Secretariat (my avatar), Seabiscuit, Black Caviar & recently Winx.

With the Royal Ascot horse racing carnival coming up in the next few weeks, I thought it might be nice to show you my cover collection of English horse racing. There is a mix of fdcs, souvenir covers, slogan cancels, autographs & postcards which I hope you will enjoy.

I have lots of covers so be patient as I will only post a few at a time. I plan to show alphabetically, in date order, my collection from Ascot to York & all those in between.

I will start with Ascot, then Ayr, Blaydon, Brighton, Cheltenham, Derby, Doncaster, Epsom, Great Yarmouth, Hamilton, Kelso, Lanark, Liverpool, Musselburgh, Newbury, Newmarket & York with a few smaller places in between. There may be few other items that are not strictly horse racing that I am sure you will be interested to see.

A catalogue of the slogans I am told exists but have never seen it, so I do not know what I am missing. Hopefully someone might be able to tell me if I am.

STOP PRESS:
I have just acquired a copy of "Collecting Slogan Postmarks" by Cyril R H Parsons, Colin G Peachy, & George Pearson.

I will quote the postmark references & preface them by "PPP".

It has taken me over 20 years to put this together, so I hope you will enjoy it.

Brad :)

I recently read a book written by Dick Francis, over 20 years ago, on the legendary jockey Lester Piggott.
Image
Dick (Richard Stanley) Francis CBE FRSL (31 October 1920 – 14 February 2010) was a British crime writer, and former steeplechase jockey, whose wrote novels on horse racing in England.

After wartime service in the RAF, Francis became a full-time jump-jockey, winning over 350 races and becoming champion jockey of the British National Hunt. He came to further prominence in 1956 as jockey to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, riding her horse Devon Loch which fell when close to winning the Grand National. Francis retired from the turf and became a journalist and novelist.
Image

Cover, with newspaper clipping cachet, signed by Lester Piggott, returning to scale on one of those 4493 winners.
Lester Keith Piggott (born 5 November 1935) is a retired English professional jockey. With 4,493 career wins, including nine Epsom Derby victories, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest flat racing jockeys of all time.

Piggott began racing horses from his father's stable when he was 10 years old and won his first race in 1948, aged 12 years, on a horse called "The Chase" at Haydock Park. Piggott is known for his quiet demeanour. He describes his mother as wisely downplaying his success, while his father rarely gave advice unless there had been a particular mistake. By his teens a sensation in the racing world, he rode his first winner of The Derby on Never Say Die in 1954 aged 18 years and went on to win eight more, on Crepello (1957), St. Paddy (1960), Sir Ivor (1968), Nijinsky (1970), Roberto (1972), Empery (1976), The Minstrel (1977) and Teenoso (1983).

Recognition

The previous post said that Lester Piggott was second to Gordon Richards:

Sir Gordon Richards (5 May 1904 – 10 November 1986) was an English jockey. He was the British flat racing Champion Jockey 26 times and is often considered the world's greatest ever jockey. He remains the only flat jockey to have been knighted.
Image
He was knighted in 1953 & in the same year won his first English (Epsom) Derby on Pinza (the Coronation year of Queen Elizabeth II).
Image

Gordon Richards & Pinza - Winner of 1953 Epsom Derby.
He retired from riding in 1954 with what was then a record 4,870 winners. He took up training in 1955 & retired from that in 1970.

Racing awards

British flat racing Champion Jockey 26 times

Honours

Knighthood (1953)

Someone went to a lot trouble to have this cover cancelled in the two Texas towns of Gordon & Richards in 1985, such was the fame of Gordon Richards:

Signed by Gordon Richards & on the reverse by the respective postmasters

Ascot Racecourse is a British racecourse, located in Ascot, Berkshire, England, which is used for thoroughbred horse racing. It is one of the leading racecourses in the United Kingdom, hosting 13 of Britain's 36 annual Group 1 horse races.

The course, owned by Ascot Racecourse Ltd, enjoys close associations with the British Royal Family, being approximately 6 miles from Windsor Castle.

Ascot currently stages 26 days of racing over the course of the year, comprising 18 flat meetings held between the months of May and October inclusive. It also stages important jump racing throughout the winter months. The Royal Meeting held each June, remains a major draw, its highlight being The Gold Cup. The most prestigious race is the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes run over the course in July.

Although I think the card would be produced in the 1950s
Ascot Racecourse was founded in 1711 by Queen Anne. The first race, "Her Majesty's Plate", with a purse of 100 guineas, was held on 11 August 1711. Seven horses competed. This first race comprised three separate four-mile (6437 m) heats. In 1813 Parliament passed an Act to ensure that the grounds would remain a public racecourse. A new grandstand was opened in 1839 at a cost of £10000. A further Act of Parliament of 1913 (Ascot Authority Act 1913 c.lxxxiv) establishing the Ascot Authority which entity manages the racecourse to this day.

The British Post produced machine slogan cancels in the 1960s & 1970s to promote race meetings & racecourses. These promotional slogans were not restricted just to horse racing.

They were popular with dealers & collectors who would write of to the various post offices to obtain examples of these slogans. There was also the genuine postal use too. You will see examples of all these here. I like to obtain several copies, one near start of use & one near the end, if possible. The usage of these would run from race meeting to race meeting. So once the race meeting was held, a new slogan would be put into the machine. So if the race meetings were a month apart they would run for a month, if a week, then only a week.

So I will start with my collection for Ascot Race meetings. The earliest I have are from 1973 & the latest from 1975. I don't think I have a complete run or collection here, but here goes with my first one:

Ascot Races, "Heinz Day" April 7th:
Image
Ascot to Romsey Hants - 8th March 1973
Image
PPP 2156t type 1404, used from February 18 to April 7, 1973.
This is the only example I have of this cancel, so I can't tell if the design is "baked beans, spaghetti or soup". :)

While talking about the Royal Ascot, I have to take time out for Black Caviar's win in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes called by the legendary Jim McGrath.

Jim Aloysius McGrath (born circa 1952 in Charlton, Victoria, Australia) was the BBC's senior horse racing commentator from 1997 to 2012, when the corporation lost the television rights to all horse racing in Great Britain to Channel 4.

McGrath initially commentated in his native Australia but found few opportunities so he moved to Hong Kong in 1973. In 1984 he moved to Europe, initially commentating at Phoenix Park in Dublin. In the same year he covered the Ebor meeting at York, receiving positive reviews from national news sources. McGrath joined the BBC in time for the 1993 racing season. He succeeded Peter O'Sullevan as the BBC's senior race commentator in December 1997. He then commentated on all of the BBC's major meetings including the Derby & the Epsom Oaks, Royal Ascot, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, the Irish Derby, the Hennessy Gold Cup, Glorious Goodwood, the Welsh National, & the world's most famous steeplechase, the Grand National. For the Grand National he covered three portions of the 4½-mile race: the start up to the first fence, the 13th to 17th fence, and from the 29th fence to the finishing post. McGrath called home the winner of every National from 1998 to 2012. McGrath has also commentated on the Melbourne Cup in Australia. In 2004 he became a presenter on At The Races. He has also been a journalist for The Daily Telegraph since the 1990s. In 2010 McGrath was dropped by the BBC from the Guineas meeting at Newmarket, but returned for later races. In 2013 the rights to televise British horse racing went exclusively to Channel 4 and McGrath decided not to make the move (from Wikipedia).

Black Caviar FDC signed by legendary BBC racecaller (Aussie) Jim McGrath, who called the Diamond Jubilee Stakes won by Black Caviar in 2012. He said while not at her best she did beat a top class sprinter in Moonlight Cloud who broke two track records at her next two runs in Europe. :)

Julian David Bonhote Wilson (21 June 1940 – 20 April 2014) was BBC Television's horse racing correspondent from 1966 until his retirement in 1997. Between 1969 and 1992, he was one of the commentators for the Grand National and for a time he had editorial control over the BBC's midweek racing coverage.

Outside his presenting career, he was a racehorse owner and racing manager. His winners as an owner included Tumbledownwind, a two-year-old winner at Glorious Goodwood and Tykeyvor, a winner in the Bessborough Stakes at Royal Ascot in 1996, trained by Lady Herries, who was married to former England cricket captain Lord Michael Colin Cowdrey.

Anne Elizabeth Cowdrey, 14th Lady Herries of Terregles, Baroness Cowdrey of Tonbridge (née Fitzalan-Howard; 12 June 1938 – 23 November 2014) was a British racehorse trainer and peeress.

Herries operated as a racehorse trainer for over thirty years from the Angmering Park estate, on the South Downs, near Arundel, Sussex. The most notable horse she trained was the Racing Post Trophy and Prix du Jockey Club winner Celtic Swing, who was crowned the champion two-year-old of 1994. She also had success in the King Edward VII Stakes, Great Voltigeur Stakes, Coronation Cup and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud with Sheriff's Star. Amongst her other notable horses was Taufan's Melody who won the Caulfield Cup in Australia at odds of 66–1 in 1998.

Cover below is signed by Lady Herries.

Taufan's Melody was controversially promoted into the 1998 Caulfield Cup field at the expense of second favourite Our Unicorn. Despite the controversy Taufan's Melody proved a worthy winner even though he badly interfered with Jezabeel & Champagne who were to quinella the 1998 Melbourne Cup. Jockey Ray Cochrane from memory was outed for 6 months.

Thank you Ian for the information on Adrian Bradbury & the link to his website. I did have a look.

I wonder whether he may have ever worked at Benhams. His pricing structures seem to resemble theirs. :D

No, he has never been associated with Benhams, but they do most new issues and the pricing is 'market pricing'. That is, they set the price at a level which will cover all the costs including the costs of designing and producing the cover, and designing the special postmark and paying Royal Mail's fee. The aim is to cover the costs with early sales, so that any unsold are 'paid for' early on, a bit like book publishing, but with the difference that cover producers don't generally remainder their stock. Costs are likely to be similar.

Benham's was founded by the late Tony Buckingham. The Story of a Stamp Dealer - Tony Buckingham, UK & R.I.P. Tony Buckingham (Benham Covers UK etc)
