Hi,

I think it is "POSTED SHIP SIDE SYDNEY", I've seen several of these on KGV heads.

Thanks a lot to you, Mobbor, for the lightning speed plating of my stamp, this saves asking about it at the plating thread. Also to Josto for reminding the exact wording.

To follow the subject, here is a stamp with the word 'ship' in the cancel, obliterated in 1898. I understand it has nothing to do with "posted ship side' cancellation which came later. Did they have "ship mail room" cancel already, or is it something else?

The ink blot on the Roo:

My guess is there was no postmarker to hand, so someone took it upon themselves to obliterate the stamp using whatever they had to hand.

The old fashioned equivalent of the dreaded biro lines we see today.

Thank you, The Pom !

I thought about it too, but the blob looks like reversed 2 or 5, so it wasn't just whaterver, unless it's my imagination.

Meanwhile, do you know when exactly they started to use "ship mail room" cancel ? Or is it "ship letter room" cancel on my N.S.W. stamp shown a couple of days ago?

Kind regards

Looking for help with this NSW numeral please. The shape and length of the first digit (1 or 7?) looks wrong and does not match either 150 or 750 on my CD.

RLMS - it is 750. The 7 is under-inked. Ignore the ink mark from the Queen's eye over the bridge of the nose.

to David B

I see the date, but to make sure what it is, "ship mail room" or "ship letter room", the latter being in existance already in mid-19th c., I understand, I need to know when exactly those "ship mail rooms" started to operate.

Stamplearner,

'The Postal History of New South Wales' by John S. White gives the earliest date for the SHIP MAIL ROOM, SYDNEY N.S.W postmark as 24th September, 1898.

You obviously have one that is earlier than was known to him.

The Ship Letter Room cancels from the 1850's (up until 1868) that you refer to did not have the words 'Ship Letter Room' on them - they had 'SYDNEY N.S.W' and 'SYDNEY NEW SOUTH WALES'.

There was also a 'SHIP LETTER' Sydney cancel (I have one from 1887) but it did not have 'ROOM' on it. Also a 'SHIP ROOM SYDNEY NSW' cancels that were in use in the 1910's - I'm not sure when they started.

The 'LOOSE SHIP LETTER' cancels from the 1860's onwards were a double ringed oval with 'LOOSE SHIP' on the top line and 'LETTER' on the base.

There was at least one oval three-lined LOOSE SHIP LETTER (with SHIP on the second line) that had only one ring.

Other 'PAQUEBOT' and 'LOOSE SHIP LETTER' cancels were in rectangular frames.

Thank you so much muttly2011 !

I appreciate your highly qualified answer, all the details and an illustration.

It looks I should consider the cancel on my stamp as an earlier example of "ship mail room". Could it be 'ship letter' Sydney cancel, or it has to be capitalised? Was that cancel round as well?

I hope, I do not overload you with too many questions. Finding this type of info is not easy.

Posted out of course was used when someone affixed the correct rate for registration to the letter, crossed it with registration lines, and then put it in a post box, rather than handing it over at the post office counter, thus bypassing the registration process.

Oh, I see, now the use of 'of course' is quite clear.
Thank you very much, The Pom !

The only question remaining, the letter after 'T" does not look like 'O' due to having angular outlines and something resembling a middle bar.

ALso I found a scan from some auction with a similar cancel, only there is a gap between "ON" and "TRAIN" while none is on mine. Might have been varieties of cancels though.

Hi Suluc1,

The Letters you querie are actually R.P. - Richard Pether was the WA Government Printer from its inception in 1870 until his retirement in 1901.
This Frank Stamp is also known with authorising initials A.C. (Aubrey Curtis -Chief Clerk.), and W.A.W. (WA. Watson - a Superintendent.)

20 April 1894. Post and Telegraph Department Circular No 59.
Official letters must bear a frank stamp as well as initials and office stamp. A sample is given in the margin (The sample was of the Governor of WA frank stamp. Earliest known from 1893) and addressees are requested to procure the neccessary stamps similar to the sample.

Above information is from Karman's 'Frank and Free.'

Cheers,
Browny.
