"wings" I understand earlier produced sheets were originally used for the new decimal stamps and as the size
and configuration differed it resulted in excess selvege.

Retouches? And also, the base of the first "A" of Australia on the right stamp.

David McCleary's set of notes are certainly worth having. They are difficult to find - I found mine on Ebay.

McCleary's notes have nothing to say on your 1d Brown.

I'm not convinced that the c is thin. The postmark is hiding too much of the necessary detail.

As for the break in the cross bar of the first A of AUSTRALIA, that is an interesting flaw. The question now, is whether it is constant.

Your close-up pictures need to be much clearer, for me to see what you see.

Where exactly do you think there are retouches? What is special about the base of the first A?

Regarding "thin c": Thank you Philip, after pointing out the coverage of the postmark I can see how it could affect the "c" in such a way.

Have to find another "broken A" now.

Retouches and a weird line..

It's the same colour as a postmark (I've noticed bits of black/grey on similar stamps before?) but has nothing to do with the postmark? I'm not saying it's necessarily a flaw, but an explanation of how it could occur?

Where exactly do you think there are retouches? What is special about the base of the first A?

All the background shading appeared 'whiter' than all the other stamps I had out and they stood out, so in answering "where" you've actually answered me. If nothing really stood out for you then I'm just seeing things (eyes can go crazy looking at these little brown pieces of paper).

Regarding the "A", again you've answered me, at normal size the right base serif is wavy due to a 'pixel worth' missing and a white shade spot attached. But, if it doesn't stand out to you as worthy that is good enough for me.

On a more positive note, I really like the type of material you are posting. Just provide a bit more detail!

The above portion of the 10c pane includes one ACSC listed variety and includes others the original owner placed.
However has made no mention of the 'doctor blade' flaw (see below) at rows 1 & 2, number 9.

I can't see either of the following two, unless (with the first) the owner meant the 'doctor blade' flaw (but then row 1 number 9 would also be mentioned)?

I notice their is a colour spot in the lower part of the "L" also (very small).

I notice a couple of black scratches on this stamp, on the chin, and on the lower neck near the necklace. Mentioned but nothing of interest I assume.

A most interesting page shown here as the original owner has placed them.
This page is most helpful as it shows the difference in what is not listed in current catalogues (they do state that not all varieties are shown) but listed in magazines of the time.

The owner has noted those that were written up at the time but has left others without description (honestly, I can't be sure if that is why some have descriptions and others not - might be a leap).

Two more examples of 474d.

474: Scratch above "L" of Australia
(unfortunate to have thinning in the same area)

474: I assume this wasn't listed in any magazine, so unlisted and may be a result of other than at the time of printing.

474: 'doctor blade' flaw
Over most of the stamp, predominately on the right

Two more single stamps appear on this page but I'm unsure as to why?
If anyone wants to have a closer look and advise the flaw please request and I will put up images for them.

There are also two more varieties noted in the strip of ten but I think this post is long enough so I will add those later.

and yes I'm actually a bit breathless (more eye strain and a bit worn out).

I will leave alone for a little while even though I'd like to continue, must put eye drops in.

I will agree with you regarding surface abrasions, I'm working on what the original collector has noted.
He/she seems to be pretty savvy in buying these at the time.

Can I suggest that when you do get back to these, that you consider putting the stamps in some sort of order - by date or ACSC number, for example.

I find it difficult to give constructive feedback when birds are followed by QE2s, are followed by a commemorative or two, etc.

I like that you have settled on a given format for your headings.

I can't change the order now can I? So as I find or (hopefully) yourself and others add to the thread it will be out of order.

I appreciate all constructive feedback, and I thank you for not holding back.

The format was something that evolved and so yes hopefully I've settled on a standard.
Blue are ACSC.
Green are unlisted.
Everything nicely centred (and easy to use 'blank space' button) as the new formatting allows this very nicely.

Again, regarding the order, I totally agree and when I first joined this site (first time with 'threads') trying to follow anything was extremely confusing until I got used to it. Sorry but the order is as I find things or tire and move to something else (order was the original intention).

Also, I'll just add, I remember in an earlier post how you originally were looking at making a thread about decimals and then moved to Roos' or pre-decimal. I started with full motivation on pre-decimal but as my collection is meagre I decided to look at decimals (and started finding all sorts of things

)

Regarding order, possibly I'll put together a condensed page of ACSC only varieties in date order on this thread at some point - hopefully at the top of a new page and up to those posted prior to 'the' post.

That will also mean people will only need to scroll from there, unless they wish to look at unlisted.

Considering when I started this thread I never expected to get past one page, doing pretty good!

Given enough listings it is a good idea.

This could then be the staging area prior to adding to the wiki.
Unlisted would then still be added on this thread as, who knows, we may find a constant (note, I suggested an earlier one being a constant - can't remember which - but obviously it is two stamps and therefore not constant, joined and interesting but not constant).
