The advertising cover is from Thomas L Devlin & Sons Ltd of Granton Harbour Edinburgh. They were a family owned business operating fishing trawlers. The business started in 1884 with one trawler & grew to 80 by WWII. In both World Wars their trawlers were requisitioned & converted to mine sweepers. After WWII the business had operations in Granton, Glasgow, Ayr & Oban.

The business was dissolved in 1984, it's 100th year.

The addressee H. Widdop & Co were producers of marine engines from 1897. In 1955 it was a subsidiary of Associated British Engineering & in 1959 was taken over by British Polar Engines.

Perhaps the cover contained an order or payment for a new motor for a trawler

All previous examples of Edinburgh I have shown with Edinburgh 'C' cancel this one is Edinburgh 'B'. Did they have more than one of these slogans in Edinburgh or did they swap it to another machine?

Note someone has pencilled on the cover that this is PPP - LP 732t type 222 & dated it as 21st November 1968. Whilst the date is not completely clear the year cannot be 1968 as this slogan was not used in Edinburgh in 1968. It can only be 21st November 1966 & is therefore PPP - LP 343t type 222.

From the early 1900s to the mid-1960s, most major towns had their own slogan postmark which contained a number. In the case of Musselburgh it was S173, within a triangle. Of course it was impossible to know the exact date of posting unless another date stamp was applied:

Come Racing at Musselburgh postmarked Musselburgh S173 to Musselburgh? <br />Pencil addrress appears to have been erased.
Come Racing at Musselburgh postmarked Musselburgh S173 to Musselburgh?
Pencil addrress appears to have been erased.

GB fdc 1966 - Musselburgh 4.jpg

Because there is no date, it is not possible to tell whether this PPP - LP343, LP527, LP732 or LP891.

Note that where there is a 't' in the reference code, the date is follows the slogan, meaning it has been transposed, as has been the case in all examples I have shown so far, both Edinburgh & Musselburgh. PPP does not record that such an example exists where the date (or in this case S173) precedes the slogan.

A couple of old English thoroughbred race horses I haven't been able to research:

Duke Of Westminster by Orme out of Gantlet.
Duke Of Westminster by Orme out of Gantlet.

Most of my attempts to research this his comes back to "The Duke of Westminster" (the person) or "The Duchess of Westminster". I have a few old English Racing Volumes at the Genesis Planet so I might see if I have better luck there with his racing record & major race wins.

I found a copy of this card on a auction site with the description being "The Duke of Edinburgh holding his horse Gauntlet".

In the meantime, let's head to the races at Newbury.

Newbury is a historic market town in the county of Berkshire, England, which is home to the administrative headquarters of West Berkshire Council. It has a population of over 41,000 & about 60 miles west of London.

The town centre around its large market square retains a rare medieval Cloth Hall, an adjoining half timbered granary, and the 15th-century St Nicolas Church, along with 17th- and 18th-century listed buildings. Newbury was founded late in the 11th century following the Norman conquest as a new borough.

Newbury Racecourse is a racecourse and events venue in the civil parish of Greenham, adjoining the town of Newbury in Berkshire, England. It has courses for flat races and over jumps. It hosts one of Great Britain's 36 annual Group 1 flat races, the Lockinge Stakes.

The racecourse held its first race meeting on 26/27 September 1905 at its current location, in the Greenham area on the south-east side of Newbury, West Berkshire.

The first recorded racing at Newbury took place in 1805 with "Newbury Races", an annual two-day race meeting at Enborne Heath. The meeting lasted until 1811 when it transferred to Woodhay Heath until 1815.

Newbury Racecourse didn't come into existence for another 90 years when Kingsclere trainer, John Porter proposed a new racecourse at Newbury. The Jockey Club had laid down strict qualifications for new racecourses and after Porter's plans were rejected several times, a chance meeting with King Edward VII brought about a further application which with the King's support was approved by the Jockey Club.

In April 1904 the Newbury Racecourse Company was formed and purchased the land and then construction began of the buildings and stables at a cost of £57,240.

On September 26 and 27, 1905 the first ever race meeting took place at Newbury Racecourse with Copper King ridden by Charlie Trigg and trained by Charles Marnes winning the opening race, the Whatcombe Handicap.

Queen Elizabeth II spent her 86th birthday at Newbury Racecourse. She watched the races from the Royal Box although her two horses, Sequence ridden by Ryan Moore and Momentary ridden by Hayley Turner, did not win.

Hi BigSaint,

The stallion Duke of Westminster won the New Stakes at Ascot in 1901.

The race is now known as the "Norfolk Stakes".

Here's an interesting link to an account in the Otago Witness (!)

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/OW19010807.2.106

I found this via the Wikipedia page for Orme (which has the wrong date for the race but it also gives this source).

The reference in the page for the Norfolk Stakes agrees he won in 1901.

The Mount Lyell Mining Co (reformed on 29 March 1893 as the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company) began operations in November 1892. The railway officially opened in 1897, and again on 1 November 1899 when the line was extended from Teepookana to Regatta Point and Strahan.

The railway was the only way to get copper from the mine at Queenstown to markets.

Camp Spur was a works area for the railway construction.

Newmarket is a market town in the county of Suffolk, approximately 65 miles north of London. It is generally considered the birthplace and global centre of thoroughbred horse racing. Newmarket is the largest racehorse training centre in Britain, the largest racehorse breeding centre, home to most major British horseracing institutions, & a key global centre for horse health. Two Classic races, and an additional three British Champions Series races are held at Newmarket every year.

Newmarket has over fifty horse training stables, two large racetracks, the Rowley Mile and the July Course, and one of the most extensive and prestigious horse training grounds in the world. The town is home to over 3,500 racehorses, and it is estimated that one in every three local jobs is related to horse racing. Palace House, the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art, the National Horseracing Museum, Tattersalls racehorse auctioneers, and two of the world's foremost equine hospitals for horse health, are in the town, which is surrounded by over sixty horse breeding studs. On account of its leading position in the multibillion-pound horse racing and breeding industry, it is also a major export centre.

In 1219 Newmarket's name was first recorded in Latin as novo mercato but this is said to be an error

Racing at Newmarket has been dated as far back as 1174, making it the earliest known racing venue of post-classical times. King James I (reigned 1603–1625) greatly increased the popularity of horse racing there, and King Charles I followed this by inaugurating the first cup race in 1634. The Jockey Club's clubhouse is in Newmarket, though its administration is based in London.

The town has two race courses situated on Newmarket Heath, The Rowley Mile and The July Course. The Rowley Mile is the home of Newmarket's two Classic races, the 2,000 Guineas and the 1,000 Guineas, two of the world's most prestigious races, run in the first weekend of May every year. It is also the home of Future Champions Day, run the weekend before Champions Day at Ascot, which includes the very important Dewhurst Stakes. The July Course is the home of the July Cup, the Falmouth Stakes and a number of other very important races.

Hi Brad,

I haven't seen any racing records for The Tinman although Google hints at outings in 1897 etc. (in subscription newspapers archives.)

His name appears a few times in the General Stud Book around 1900.

Here's his pedigree at least:

Naturally Newmarket had is horse racing slogans cancel which started with this one in 1966;

Newmarket Racing Slogan 1966.jpg

And finished with this one in 1975:

Newmarket Racing Slogan 1974.jpg

A run of 8 years which was a pretty long run compared to other towns. :)

These slogans with the dates in the slogan were 'general slogans' used to advertise race meetings. Those without the dates were 'LP or local publicity slogans' used in the off racing season from November to April.

This particular machine slogan cancel I have affectionately nicknamed 'Harry the Hairy Horse'. It is quite scarce & slogan cancels after this did not have this hair.

Pity these are on piece. I am guessing most of these were on covers for Christmas cards & recognising an addressee went to the nearby town of Huntingdon.

From the early 1900s to the mid-1960s, most major towns had their own slogan postmark which contained a number. In the case of Newmarket it was 557, within a triangle. Of course it was impossible to know the exact date of posting unless another date stamp was applied:

I note with other towns these slogans would on one day & the new one would start the next. Newmarket appears to be different with these slogans finishing & starting on the same day. I don't think I any examples to confirm this.

It does seem also a short lead up time of a week before the first race day. As 'Harry the Hairy Horse' had been in use for four months leading up to it, I would have thought it more appropriate to this slogan on April 1.
