50 kobo bananas (plantain) Nigeria 1992 SG633.jpg

50 kobo bananas/plantain Nigeria 1992 SG633

Plantain bananas are unpalatable raw, and are cooked before eating.

There are also varieties of banana grown for the leaves (for use in packaging, preparation and serving of various sorts of food). The fruit of the grown-for-their-leaves varieties of banana are typically full of seeds. Like guava cores, they taste great but are so full of seeds as to be hardly worth the trouble of trying to eat them.

Western supermarkets and grocery stores tend to only have seedless varieties of banana.

I wanted to buy a banana tree as a present for Mum. Checked the local newspaper ads and found a seller. At the seller's house were about 40 potted banana trees, all exactly the same height—about 60cm. His house is in the suburbs, with a tiny yard. ‘How could he get so many uniform-looking, uniform-sized saplings?’ I wondered. “Did you grow them from seeds?” I ask. “No,” says he, “from cell culture.”

The things you learn on Stampboards! I have read that most bananas are cultivated from root cuttings rather than seeds (hence the lack of genetic diversity and susceptibility to disease) but I had never heard of cell culture. Had to Google it (https://youtu.be/Bmd5j8NfkrU). Found out that "Conventional planting materials grow more slowly than tissue-culture plantlets and produce smaller bunches. Besides producing larger bunches, tissue-culture plantlets reduce the time between harvests. They also grow and flower more uniformly, which makes their harvesting and marketing more predictable."

Thanks for posting the Nigerian stamp and the story! It brought back memories of Nigerian markets and taxi parks and bunches of small, sweet, yellow bananas and branches of big, green, plantain!

Several posts to this Stampboards thread have included Tonga’s famous banana self-adhesive stamps, first issued in the late 1960s. Here is one of a series of 1897 engraved stamps, which appear to include some banana palms in the bottom parts of the decorative frame. Not a single bunch of bananas – they had to wait until 1969, apparently.

Cheers. Tod. :)

Where are the bananas on this stamp? In the refrigerated hold:

BarbadosGeestport.jpg

In addition to carrying bananas between the West Indies and the U.K., the Geestport was also requistioned by the British government as a support vessel during the Falklands war. It also had the distinction of being the first commercial vessel to call at Grenada after the American invasion (https://www.geestline.com/history/).

Good to finally see a Harry Belafonte stamp, having searched in vain for one. Well done.

On the subject of bananas and show biz, here are a couple of real banana icons. The first is French, celebrating the amazing Josephine Baker. The inset top left, is a picture of her 1925 performance with the Folies-Bergére, where the French designers created for her a semi-nude outfit featuring bananas on the waist. She was the first American woman to receive the Croix de Guerre, France’s highest military honor. The stamp was issued by France in 1994.

The second stamp is from the US 2011 series celebrating Latin Music Legends. It shows Carmen Miranda, wearing her trademark fruit headgear. So much more than a hat, bananas featured prominently. She was born in Portugal but grew up in Brazil. She later moved to the US.

Cheers. Tod. :)

Here is another "Banana Boat," this one featured in the Cayman Islands issue commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the End of World War II:

BananaBoatCaymanIslands1995.jpg

According to U-boat.net (https://uboat.net/allies/merchants/ship/1647.html), the 2,493 ton Comayagua was completed in 1921 at the Newburgh Shipyards Inc, Newburgh NY for the Cuyamel Fruit Company in New Orleans. In December 1929 it was transferred to United Fruit SS Co, New York. Sailing under the Honduran flag, the ship was hit by two torpedos from U-125 about 14 miles from Georgetown, Grand Cayman on May 14, 1942 en route from Puerto Barrios, Guatemala to Niquero, Cuba. It sank and seven members of its crew of 42 were lost.

I discovered more bananas in the old market in Anguilla as depicted on the "20th Anniversary of Separation from St. Kitts-Nevis" issue of May 25, 1987:

There was an earlier banana stamp in the 1970 definitive issue:

There is another one from the 1997 definitives (80 cent denomination) that I do not have.

Hello banana fans! These delicious bananas just came in, so it seemed obvious to share them around. The first Tonga bunch are all mint on the backing material, so no storage problems. All different.

Some of the multiple bananas are here. Also, a number of used, including some which are devilishly sticky & a nightmare to store. They should always be kept on piece. Or better still, on cover. Cheers. Tod. :)

Hello everyone. It just sunk in that we had forgotten an obvious addition to the banana bunch, the frequently encountered Malaysia $5 definitive, from the 1980s and 1990s. Here is a typical example.

Malaysia 1986 Fruit Series stamp, $5 banana, SG 349.
Malaysia 1986 Fruit Series stamp, $5 banana, SG 349.

The Linnaean name Musa sapientum (M. sapientum) was used for many years to refer to ‘dessert bananas’. It has since been discovered that it is a hybrid between two wild species, M. acuminata and M. balbisiana, which is now called M. × paradisiaca. The same is also true of the plantain or ‘cooking banana’. Cheers. Tod. :)

I was surprised to see a "banana stamp" in French Polynesia's 2000 "Traditional Sports" set:

This looks more like work than a sport to me. The other stamp in the set is "stone hauling". I wonder if the coach was really a foreman in disguise!

It is indeed a traditional sport of French Polynesia to run with fruits, usually Banana, tide to a rod. I think it developed from the way they carry fruits from the fields to the market. Beside the 2000 stamp that you posted above, French Polynesia issued at least other five stamps show this traditional sport of running with Banana or people carry Banana and other fruits in years: 1967, 1972, 2002, 2012 and 2021.

Hello everybody. A few months ago, Lambinator posted the original 3c Banana Gathering from Niue’s 1976 Agriculture set. Here are two more versions of that design, which features a worker harvesting the fruit. The 20c is from the set which replaced the original set, due to widespread increases in postal charges. The other is one of the provisional surcharges, which was used in the interim. Cheers, Tod. :)

On the subject of Niue, here is the 1940 surcharge, SG 78, on the engraved 1½d Black and purple landscape. You can see fine bunches of bananas on both sides of the frame, along with other varieties of tropical fruit.

The original stamp was not issued, although expensive examples do sometimes appear on the market. The same design was used by the Cook Islands, also overprinted, and the plates were produced by Bradbury Wilkinson, but the stamps were printed in New Zealand. Cheers, Tod. :)

Thanks for pointing out the bananas in the frame of this stamp. I have the stamp but missed the bananas. Thanks also for bringing the varieties of the other Niue banana stamp to my attention.
