German Occupation postage stamps, Besetzungsausgaben 1939-45

Post by johnrcrow »

Thought it useful to others to look at the German Occupation issues from 1939 to 1945.

The areas covered as in Michel catalogue are:

Albania, Elsass, Estland, Frankreich, Kanal-Inseln (Channel Islands), Kotor, Kurland, Laibach (Ljubljana), Litauen (Lithuania), Luxembourg, Macedonia, Montenegro, Ostland, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, Zante.

These include private issues.

Some of the postage stamps are rare and subject to wide spread forgeries, mainly though false cancellations.

I have limited examples for many of the areas and hope to encourage others to add to the thread.

I will begin with Serbia since I have recently bagged a fairly complete collection.

I am using the Michel Specialised 2009 catalogue for identification.

SERBIEN (SERBIA)

Scan Serb 1. 1941. Jugoslavian stamps with diagonal SERBIEN overprint. Cancelled set.
German Occupation Serbia postage stamps, 1941, Michel 1 to 15 cancelled.
German Occupation Serbia postage stamps, 1941, Michel 1 to 15 cancelled.

Scan Serb 2. 1941. Jugoslavian stamps with diagonal SERBIEN overprint. Mint set.

German Occupation Serbia postage stamps, 1941, Michel 1 to 15 mint.
German Occupation Serbia postage stamps, 1941, Michel 1 to 15 mint.

Scan Serb 3. Burelage features. Different colour background patterns are present for various stamps.

German Occupation Serbia postage stamps, 1941, Burelage shades.
German Occupation Serbia postage stamps, 1941, Burelage shades.

Back to cancels.

First set shown were cancelled however, very likely to be false as the CV for cancelled set is €2000 where as the mint never hinged is €95!

The cancelled Mi. 15. alone stands at €1400.

Serb Scan 4. German Occupation Serbia postage stamp 30 Din Mi.15, 1941, cancelled.
German Occupation Serbia postage stamp 30 Din Mi.15, 1941, cancelled.
German Occupation Serbia postage stamp 30 Din Mi.15, 1941, cancelled.

So having a closer look at cancels. Since none are proofed then assuming false and rising at a CV of around €95?

The second mint lot are easier and again set at €95.

I am open to being proved wrong for the cancelled set.

The validity of cancels is a recurrent theme!

Note both sets have same cancel!

CV for used set is €3800. This all regarded as favour cancels?

So CV around €160 per set.

Burelage present with light rose, light green, light green-blue, light lilac shades.

The Mi 24 and Mi. 25 have 2 perforation variants.

40 Din Mi. 24A perf 12½ and 24B perf 11(rare CV €500 NHM)
40 Din Mi. 25A perf 12½ and 25B perf 11½ (rare CV €1200 for NHM).

Thanks for sharing this fascinating (although historically dark!) period with us, johnrcrow. Don't know anything about it but could the cancels be CTO/favour rather than "fake"?

Thanks to both 60366 and OldDuffer1.

I assume most are favour cancels OldD.

Easy to see when all the set has a similar cancel. Not as easy to assess where different cancels appear. Generally the very neat, part cancels, as well as the stamp condition (has it ever seen a letter?) might help.

The examples shown by 60366 are interesting and I will round to my examples shortly.

German Occupation of Serbia. 1942. Anti-masonic exhibition.
German Occupation of Serbia. 1942. Anti-masonic exhibition.
From Wiki.

The Grand Anti-Masonic Exhibition (German: Anti-Freimaurer-Ausstellung, Serbian: Antimasonska izložba) was the name of an antisemitic exhibition that was opened on October 22, 1941 during World War II in Belgrade, the capital of the Nazi Germany-established Militärverwaltung in occupied Serbia.

Financed by the Germans and opened with the support of collaborationist leader Milan Nedić, it featured an estimated 200,000 brochures, 108,000 copies of nine different types of envelopes, 100,000 flyers, 60,000 copies of twenty different posters, and 176 different propaganda films that had previously been seen during The Eternal Jew exhibitions in Munich and Vienna in 1937.

Despite nominally being anti-Masonic, its purpose was to promote antisemitic ideas and intensify hatred of Jews. Certain displays were intended to dehumanize the Jewish people and justify their extermination by the Germans. Others resembled anti-Jewish propaganda from the period of the Russian Empire and repeated the claims put forward in the book The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. The exhibition was organized by former members of the fascist movement known as Zbor and sought to expose an alleged Judeo-Masonic/Communist conspiracy for world domination through several displays featuring antisemitic propaganda.

Four stamps commemorating the exhibition were issued by Serbian collaborationist authorities in January of 1942, depicting Judaism as being the source of all evil in the world and portraying a "strong and victorious Serbia triumphing over the plot of world domination." An estimated 80,000 people, including collaborationist leader Milan Nedić and some of his ministers, visited the exhibition prior to its closure on January 19, 1942.

I like the engraved details.

So an almost complete Serbian collection. Mainly with favour cancels so not too pricey but a pretty collection to have,

Next, something very different.

German Occupation of Channel Islands (Kanal-Insein in German).

Guernsey and Jersey.

I am sorting these as of now.

Not a large number of issues but interesting.

Maybe Stanley Gibbons German catalogue is best at looking at these, rather than Michel. I shall look at both and arrive at some conclusion.

Absolutely fascinating! I have not seen any of these. Does the Michel Katalog not include a lot of areas (Czechoslovakia / Sudentenland, etc) or are those in the big book?

The CV on cancelled is amazing. The one group you displayed appears to have almost identical cancels in the same location, same corner, same orientation, same "weight" on the stempel. That seems to me to indicate a CTO scenario if authentic, forgery (hard to prove) OR the postmaster was a perfectionist. Usually such identical cancels indicates, to me in any regard, a potential forgery. As you stated, there are so many forgeries, it's a subject on its own. My first post was re all the forged overprints on eBay & tips how to spot toner inks to the non oil-based inks used. The Germans used oil-based indelible inks on all period overprints.

Keep the scans coming. I'll throw-in my Czech stuff, et al (eventually), & hopefully someone can comment with authority.
Courtesy is contagious.

Thanks for post Old Architect.

I am assuming that the near identical cancels are all favour cancels, made on particular sets.

I am not sure how to regard the favour cancels in terms of CV and adopt a CV as for mint and this maybe not too accurate.

There may be some cancels that are ´genuine`postal strikes but I have not attempted a close look.

The low CV stamps are best candidates for genuine cancels as there is little value in faking.

SG listing for German Occupation issues is:

Albania, Bohemia and Moravia, France (Elsass), Ionian Islands, Latvia, Lithuania, Vilnius, Luxembourg, Russia, Serbia, Yugoslavia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Channel Islands.

This differs from Michel. Bohemia and Morovia is treated as a protectorate. Estland, Kotor, Kurland, Ostland, Ukraine, Zante and Zara are included.

Sudentenland treated as separate category in Michel.

Again full of high CV examples. The Bohemia and Moravia, Elsass and Luxembourg, as underlined, are less spicy for high CVs. The other contain very high CV examples and of course are litttered with cancel forgeries.

A wide ranging area for the thread and I will plod through hoping to inspire interest, hoping to see some of the rare stamps from others.

I have buckets of these overprints. I've always thought they were faked, as it's doubtful (impossible?) they ever were in the locations shown but, the range of motifs is remarkable. They're stamped with indelible ink. Possible as local "patriotic" additions?
IMG_1686 (2).JPG
Additionally, my "Lorraine, Alsace & Luxemburg" Hindenburg full sets, which all show the typeface impression running through to the rear, are the common garden variety in MNH? Perhaps I need to be looking at more cancels. Your answers & scans have been enlightening. Running through this thread will be most interesting :) !

Apologies for not removing the last from my album (I was rushed) :D

No, that is NOT possible. THEY ARE FAKES. Produced in Eastern Europe in the last 20 years simply to defraud collectors. Ebay is absolutely flooded with the damned things.

Thanks for inputs Old Architect and 60366. Also clarifications from gavin-h.

I did not mention the Swastika overprints from Jersey as they are very rare (and I have no examples). More can be stated if anyone is interested?

I now dip into Luxembourg. Not so extensive and use of Luxembourg postage stamps.

Nice additions 60366.

Now plodding on with a larger collection. These are common stamps and I assure many have these tucked away.

Czechoslovakia, Bohemia and Moravia, (Böhmen und Mähren).

In SG, under German Occupation Issues, protectorate , Michel catalogue as a protectorate and not included in Besetzungsausgaben 1939-45!

Large number of stamps as I said and most with low CV hence not scarce. Looking out for flaws could be useful.

Scan BM1. German Protectorate Böhmen und Mähren, Michel 1 to Michel 19. 1939 July 15th.

German Protectorate Böhmen und Mähren, selected designs. 1939 July 15th.
German Protectorate Böhmen und Mähren, selected designs. 1939 July 15th.

Michel lists numerous ´flaws`and I though it useful a to add these. Most get the CV ´s to around €40 for examples.

Scan BM3. German Protectorate Böhmen und Mähren, overprint aberrations to look out for.

German Protectorate Böhmen und Mähren, overprint aberrations to look out for.

My no dot 5H shown.
Rest no luck.
Note, there is a hyphenated variety for IK (CESKO-SL) instead of CESKOSL.

I've seen a slightly different obliteration over the "Czech" banner on the Masaryk 1K's. It's not in the (my old) Michel catalog (3-lines much closer together). Is that a variant or another fake by-product of the cottage industries of the internet auction houses? See pic below:

Old Architect. Seems that there could be some variations in the top bars. Hardly worth faking these though I would think?

I plod on.

Things get a little convoluted with the next batches.

I will follow the SG nomenclature as it is easier to understand compared to the Michel.

Sent via the Prague pneumatic post with a “ Mit Rohrpost Potrubni Poštou” label.

Thanks johnrcrow. Since I have gobs of old Czech stamps, I'll add the low CV items. Later linden leaves here. I'm assuming as the war progressed, things naturally became more expensive. Therefore, higher values.

Thanks Old Architect.

I think that the blocks, sheets, etc., are appealing.

I will finish up the Bohmen and Mahren tomorrow with SG numbering and thus include singles and stamps with ´labels`.

Do we also ´do`Poland occupation, another extensive collection with mainly low CV?

Why not

Keep them coming.

Great lot OldArchitect. The 8ohem ´8OHEM` I like and a good CV.

I am now going to get to the end of the SG numbered examples and these include the stamps with labels.

In fact I start with one.

Note the attached `label`, I like the look of these.

I do not have a copy of SG.58 (60h + 40h) that has same design but in indigo however Old Architect showed one in his last post, in fact he showed the pair!

German Protectorate Böhmen und Mähren. SG numbering.1943. SG.111. First death Anniversary Reinhard Heydrich.

Wiki.

Reinhard Tristan Eugen Heydrich, 7 March 1904 – 4 June 1942) was a high-ranking German SS and police official during the Nazi era and a principal architect of the Holocaust. He was chief of the Reich Security Main Office (including the Gestapo, Kripo, and SD). He was also Stellvertretender Reichsprotektor (Deputy/Acting Reich-Protector) of Bohemia and Moravia. He served as president of the International Criminal Police Commission (ICPC, later known as Interpol) and chaired the January 1942 Wannsee Conference which formalised plans for the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question"—the deportation and genocide of all Jews in German-occupied Europe.

Many historians regard Heydrich as the darkest figure within the Nazi regime. Adolf Hitler described him as "the man with the iron heart".[4] He was the founding head of the Sicherheitsdienst (Security Service, SD), an intelligence organisation charged with seeking out and neutralising resistance to the Nazi Party via arrests, deportations, and murders. He helped organise Kristallnacht, a series of coordinated attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and parts of Austria on 9–10 November 1938. The attacks were carried out by SA stormtroopers and civilians and presaged the Holocaust. Upon his arrival in Prague, Heydrich sought to eliminate opposition to the Nazi occupation by suppressing Czech culture and deporting and executing members of the Czech resistance. He was directly responsible for the Einsatzgruppen, the special task forces that travelled in the wake of the German armies and murdered more than two million people by mass shooting and gassing, including 1.3 million Jews.

Heydrich was critically wounded in Prague on 27 May 1942 as a result of Operation Anthropoid. He was ambushed by a team of Czech and Slovak soldiers who had been sent by the Czechoslovak government-in-exile to kill the Reich-Protector; the team was trained by the British Special Operations Executive. Heydrich died from his injuries a week later. Nazi intelligence falsely linked the Czech and Slovak soldiers and resistance partisans to the villages of Lidice and Ležáky. Both villages were razed; the men and boys age 14 and above were shot, and all but a handful of the women and children were deported and killed in Nazi concentration camps.

Wiki.

Bedřich Smetana, 2 March 1824 – 12 May 1884) was a Czech composer who pioneered the development of a musical style that became closely identified with his people's aspirations to a cultural and political "revival." He has been regarded in his homeland as the father of Czech music. Internationally he is best known for his opera The Bartered Bride and for the symphonic cycle Má vlast ("My Fatherland"), which portrays the history, legends and landscape of the composer's native Bohemia. It contains the famous symphonic poem "Vltava", also popularly known by its German name "Die Moldau" (in English, "The Moldau").

Smetana was naturally gifted as a composer and gave his first public performance at the age of 6. After conventional schooling, he studied music under Josef Proksch in Prague. His first nationalistic music was written during the 1848 Prague uprising, in which he briefly participated. After failing to establish his career in Prague, he left for Sweden, where he set up as a teacher and choirmaster in Gothenburg, and began to write large-scale orchestral works.

In the early 1860s, a more liberal political climate in Bohemia encouraged Smetana to return permanently to Prague. He threw himself into the musical life of the city, primarily as a champion of the new genre of Czech opera. In 1866 his first two operas, The Brandenburgers in Bohemia and The Bartered Bride, were premiered at Prague's new Provisional Theatre, the latter achieving great popularity. In that same year, Smetana became the theatre's principal conductor, but the years of his conductorship were marked by controversy. Factions within the city's musical establishment considered his identification with the progressive ideas of Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner inimical to the development of a distinctively Czech opera style. This opposition interfered with his creative work, and may have hastened a decline in health that precipitated his resignation from the theatre in 1874.

By the end of 1874, Smetana had become completely deaf but, freed from his theatre duties and the related controversies, he began a period of sustained composition that continued for almost the rest of his life. His contributions to Czech music were increasingly recognised and honoured, but a mental collapse early in 1884 led to his incarceration in an asylum and subsequent death. Smetana's reputation as the founding father of Czech music has endured in his native country, where advocates have raised his status above that of his contemporaries and successors. However, relatively few of Smetana's works are in the international repertory, and most foreign commentators tend to regard Antonín Dvořák as a more significant Czech composer.

Bohemia and Moravia were freed from German rule in 1945 (April and early May).

The Sudeten German inhabitants were deported to Germany.

Issues for stamps from Czechoslovakia were resumed.
