Obviously don't need this now with direct image loading facility. However their site is no longer recognising my (correct!) log-in details or e-mail address. Have sent a couple of messages but only received auto-replies. Have now taken out a dispute through Paypal. Will inform of progress!

Anyone else in the same situation?
Can now report that I received a full refund via Paypal- presumably they didn't hear anything from them either! (By the way- in these cases who pays- Paypal themselves?)

PayPal takes the money from the account holder. Blocks PayPal balance if they have one, or charges credit card / bank account of record.

Six months since the last post on this thread and I received an email from them:
URGENT: Do you want to keep your account active?
Hello Photobucket Member,

Your account is over storage, you need to login and manage your account. If you take no action, your account access may be restricted.
Which is odd, because I deleted everything - I thought. SO I signed in again and checked. This is what I see:

Screenshot 2021-06-19 at 12.50.48.png

Photobucket screen shot.

Oh dear! Let's look at the images. Without checking every album (there are still many showing) I found just one:

I know what this image is and it is of no importance!
I know what this image is and it is of no importance!

For all the others, this is what is displayed:

Photobucket images screen shots - Sorry the account holder has deleted this image.

If they are counting all my deleted images as using 'my' space - 811.46 MB of it - no wonder their business model is also cr*p!

,
Yes, I got the same email - - had about 21,000 images on my account!

SOME were partially visible, but most looked like yours.

photobucket via this mess have proven they are THE most incompetent company in the USA -stupidity beyond belief from start to finish over MANY years now.

And clearly they still need to pay to host all the images, while they bungle about.

So a modest flat fee of $20 or so a year cost them mega money across millions of accounts.

I couldn't have put it better. As I wrote back in 2017 when this nonsense started
Quite how this got past anyone with any commercial sense is beyond me but then the execution of this stupid policy has been breathtakingly bad.
Fast forward to 2021 and they apparently saw an uptick in traffic earlier this year when the 'ten-year challenge' went viral. Essentially, people were looking for photos from a decade ago and of course, some remembered that they had stored them on Photobucket.

On checking it seems that they have now introduced pricing plans similar to those suggested by The Sheriff, me and many others, four years ago.

A quote from their new CEO (who was brought in to remove the old management team that caused this spectacular policy of self-destruction) on The Verge says:
That was just the result of a short-sighted decision from the previous management team, in an effort to get immediate results,” Leonard says. “Saying, ‘we’re going to force you into a single plan and charge you $400’, that’s not a realistic price.
So, it sounds like they have something of a plan to recover, but there's a long way to go, and frankly, I would rate the chances of success as near to zero.

Quite apart from counting your deleted images as storage, they quite literally have a mountain to climb. This graph is taken from some of the professional tracking software we use at work and you can see the direction of travel;

Image 20-06-2021 at 09.27.jpg

Despite the reputed 'uptick' in traffic earlier this year, which seems to be missing from the graph, there doesn't seem to be a lot to rescue here. In fact, to see the uptick you have to look at their new url, as they have moved the website to be an app, with app.photobucket being the new domain name. When you do examine this, you can see the spike;

Image 20-06-2021 at 09.47.jpg

For those with an interest in this, the spike peaked at 32,000 users in a single day but has since dropped back to just 245 users a day, with this number fluctuating between 0 and 400 users a day. That's hardly a number on which you can build a business.

I'm sure in years to come this will be written up for Business Schools as an example of when strategy gets replaced by short-term tactics, with spectacular results.

Shocking! It's not so many years ago that Stampboards alone would have had more than that many members a day using Photobucket.

The new CEO has a lot to do to save "www.RMSTitanic.com"

Photobucket management could always get a job as internet strategists at Stanley Gibbons.

Unless that's where they were recruited from...

BigSaint wrote: 29 Jun 2017 08:59 Admin note - DO NOT delete your photobucket images or your account there in anger - I have little doubt someone at photobucket with a brain will see the disaster they have unleashed, and back off totally, or in large part, in the next week.

So today, I opened this email from Photobucket:

decisionmail.jpg

Looks like they're just letting me know I should do a standard login to keep my account active, right?

So I log in, and I get this message:

Sure, it may not be $525 a year they are demanding anymore, but it is still holding your images hostage, after you went to all the trouble to upload them, when it was free.

The forum software will automatically delete what I want to type here, so there's no point.

Not sure what will get deleted :?: :?:

I suppose you are using the inbuilt function to upload images here, so no need to worry about the images stored on photobucket.

Unless there are other non-stamp important images that you may need, for them you will need to pay to keep it active.

He said "The forum software will automatically delete what I want to type" i.e. "My opinions on Photobucket involve the use of swear words that the Board software will auto-censor if I type them in here", so nothing to do with image deletion.

They have been threatening to delete my images for several years now. I wish they would hurry up & do it, then they would stop sending me inane emails wish I send to the junk box.

I have all mine on my system & in that other unmentionable place. :D

I seem to remember I deleted mine; that way they cannot be found and used by anybody else, however that might happen.

That $5/month is a special discount "teaser" rate (more aligned to the standard entry rate, for far fewer images).
I'm fairly sure the regular "25,000 image rate" is higher, once that "do it now" offer expires.

One strategy for you, if you want the ransomed images, would be to sign up for a single month (or three),
and then use a bulk downloader, to claw all your piccies back.

Without endorsement (from me), here is one page "some have found useful" :

https://techgirlkb.guru/2017/12/download-images-held-hostage-photobucket/

Obviously, others are out there too ....

... but the key takeaway is that "your window for cheap access to your files may be closing".

Photobucket? .... "Like anchors", but begins with a "W" :D
