Gumdale which is about 15 kms east of Brisbane.
Well it's the same hand writing as my example, but it is not the hand writing of Saville Sheard if that is what you are asking.

I had always presumed it was the addressee sending it to herself. :D

Hi Cover2021

I am ok with the 1960 Melbourne Cup Royal postmarked GPO Perth fdi but I am interested in the no cachet 1978 Race Horses. Please put it aside for me. Still searching on the Challis fdcs.

In 1947, the hospital was handed over from the army to the Repatriation Commission and became the Repatriation General Hospital Heidelberg. The Commission (Department of Veterans' Affairs) ran the hospital until 1994.

The 1960 Melbourne Cup fdc arrived from Stampboarder "earlierthebetter":

Hermes Melbourne Cup fdc postmarked Wodonga Vic cds on fdi -12th October 1960 to Kingsgrove NSW.
Hermes Melbourne Cup fdc postmarked Wodonga Vic cds on fdi -12th October 1960 to Kingsgrove NSW.

Wodonga is a city on the Victorian side of the border with New South Wales, 300 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. Its population is approximately 35,100 and is separated from its twin city in New South Wales, Albury, by the Murray River. Together, the two cities form an urban area with an estimated population of 93,603.

Founded as a customs post with its twin city Albury on the other side of the Murray River, the town grew subsequent to the opening of the first bridge across the Murray in 1860. Originally named Wodonga, its name was changed to Belvoir then later back to Wodonga.

The Post Office opened 1 June 1856 although known as Belvoir until 26 July 1869. It had previously been regarded as the smaller, less prosperous cousin of the two. Whilst still somewhat smaller than Albury, economic growth in both areas has ameliorated such distinctions.

And inside:

Aust fdc 1960 - Melb Cup Flemington WCS.jpg

It goes without saying that Flemington is the Home of the Melbourne Cup, where the race is run on the first Tuesday of November every year.

I have a few Flemington postmarked Royal & Wesley 1960 Melbourne Cup fdcs, but until I acquired this one, all were addressed. I recall bidding for one at a Postal Auction somewhere over 10 years ago where I bid $295 for a similar unaddressed fdc & was outbid.

This one including postage cost me $8.35, all I can say is better buy Bega. :D

Noted that the sender from up Upwey way used a free parcel tracking label on a letter.

Bit cheeky.

I have also done this only to receive a letter from Auspost demanding payment of the difference between the letter rate and the cheapest parcel rate plus an administration fee.

Avondale University (previously known as the Australian Missionary College) is an Australian tertiary education provider affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist education system, the world’s second largest Christian school system.

As the Seventh Day Adventist Church does not support gambling of any kind, I am surprised that they used a 1960 Melbourne Cup stamp on the cover.

I received the 1960 Melbourne Cup fdc from Stampboarder towradji as a freebie which greatly appreciate:

1960 Melbourne Cup fdc postmarked with GPO Perth machine slogan cancel "Senders Address on Back of Envelope Ensures Prompt Return of Undeliverable Articles" - 12th October 1960 to Sydney NSW
1960 Melbourne Cup fdc postmarked with GPO Perth machine slogan cancel "Senders Address on Back of Envelope Ensures Prompt Return of Undeliverable Articles" - 12th October 1960 to Sydney NSW

It predates the previous example of this one which I have had for years

1960 Melbourne Cup advertising cover postmarked with GPO Perth machine slogan cancel "Sponsor A British Migrant" - 7th November 1960 to Fremantle WA.
1960 Melbourne Cup advertising cover postmarked with GPO Perth machine slogan cancel "Sponsor A British Migrant" - 7th November 1960 to Fremantle WA.

And now makes a good pair with this matching slogan from Perth WA 1:

Hi Brad

I have found a couple more with Wodonga cancels.

No. 1 has the same cds as before but would be a homemade FDC I expect.

No. 2 has a smaller timed cds c/w a slogan
cancel and with a Bank of NSW cachet.

Both roughly opened but either or both are yours if you want them.

No. 1

But it is Orange.
But it is Orange.
Orange is a city in the Central Tablelands region of New South Wales, Australia. It is 254 km west of the Sydney. Orange has a population of over 40,493 making it a significant regional centre.

Orange is the birthplace of poets Banjo Paterson and Kenneth Slessor, although Paterson lived in Orange for only a short time as an infant. Walter W. Stone, book publisher (Wentworth Books) and passionate supporter of Australian literature, was also born in Orange.

Orange is a well-known fruit growing district, and produces apples, pears, and many stone fruits such as cherries, peaches, apricots, and plums; oranges are not grown in the area, since its climate is too cool. In recent years, a large number of vineyards have been planted in the area for rapidly expanding wine production.

The Cadia gold mine is a large open cut gold and copper mine located about 20 kilometres south of Orange. The mine has been developed throughout the 1990s and is a major employer in the region with an expected lifespan of several decades. Cadia is the second largest open-cut mine in Australia, following the Super Pit at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.

Phoenix tells us the post office opened here on 1st January 1849.

Multi-stamped cover with the 1960 Melbourne Cup 5d stamp to Flensburg Germany postmarked St.John's Park NSW 31st December 1965.
St Johns Park is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 35 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government areas of the City of Fairfield. It is part of the Greater Western Sydney region.

St Johns Park was originally home to the Cabrogal people who inhabited the broad Liverpool-Fairfield area. When the First Fleet arrived in Australia, the colonial administration designated this area the parish of St John. Nineteenth century maps indicate a St Johns Farm in the area and it is through this connection that the suburb gained its name.

Phoenix tells us the St. John's Park opened as a PO 20/6/1890 & closed 30/6/1978.

Snail shaped Q in Queensland
Gayndah is a town and locality in the North Burnett Region, Queensland, with a population of almost 2000. It is 328 kms north of Brisbane & 150 kms west of Maryborough.

The name Gayndah is of Aboriginal origin but the derivative is unclear. It may derive either from Gu-in-dah (or Gi-un-dah), meaning thunder, or from Ngainta meaning place of scrub. Alternatively it may be derived from Waka language kunda meaning range or ridge, or ga-een-ta meaning bushy land.

Exploration of the Gayndah area began in 1847 by explorer Thomas Archer and Surveyor James Charles Burnett (1815-1854). The first European settlers arrived in 1848, and the town was established in the following year. A post office was established at Gayndah in 1850. This suggests that Gayndah may be the oldest officially gazetted town in Queensland, although the Moreton Bay penal colony of 47 people was established at Redcliffe on Moreton Bay in 1824 but relocated in 1825 to a site on the Brisbane River (now Brisbane's central business district).

Brisbane's population by 1856 was only an estimated 3,840. Gayndah and Ipswich were regional towns of similar size and competed with Brisbane to become the capital of Queensland when it became a separate colony from New South Wales in 1859.

The railway was opened to Gayndah on 16 December 1907.

In 1872, the town was the location where the hoax fish Ompax spatuloides was supposedly procured. Ompax spatuloides was a hoax fish "discovered" in Australia in August, 1872. Said to be poisonous, it could be found on some lists of Australian fishes through the 1930s. The fish was a joke perpetrated by people at Gayndah station, Queensland, who prepared it from the body of a mullet, the tail of an eel and the head of a platypus or needlefish.

Used at GPO's in all states & at Canberra, Launceston & Newcastle Post Offices. Introduced on 9th October 1949 & used annually for one week prior to 24th October, until last seen in 1978.

Thanks to RogerE for the information on addressee "Mr E Garrard" on the "Everyday is Happy Day Thread":
RogerE wrote: 29 Nov 2021 05:17 Addressee Mr Eddie Garrard, and wife Del, were prominent members of Newcastle Philatelic Society = NPS for many years. Each served in committee positions, including terms as President. They subsequently moved to Sydney, but remained supportive members of NPS.

They were keen collectors of early pictorial postmarks, and it is not unusual to find a 1960s cover with a pictorial postmark that was self-addressed to the Garrard family, since their collections came onto the market after they passed away.

Some of Brad's other 1960 "Melbourne Cup" covers with a Seventh Day Adventist Church-related address were probably also "saved" by Mr Eddie Garrard, as the family were respected members of that denomination, and Ed was employed in its ranks.

Over the years I have seen a lot of covers addressed to Mr & Mrs E Garrard, Roger thankyou for putting the "face to the name". :D

Australasian Missionary College advertising cover with 1960 Melbourne Cup 5d stamp cancelled with Cooranbong NSW cds - 22nd November 1960 to Hamilton NSW
Cooranbong is a town in a suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie, Greater Newcastle in New South Wales, 91 kms north of Sydney & 5kms west of Morisset, with a population of about 5,500. Cooranbong is surrounded by the Watagans National Park. The post office opened here in 1881.

When the railway was built from Sydney to Newcastle in the 1880s, the line passed around 5 km east of the town centre. The station and associated settlement were originally labelled as Cooranbong but later became known as Morisset. This was devastating to the local economy in conjunction with the significant economic depression occurring in the colony. Consequently, the population declined to 206 people by 1891. This economic depression continued until the Seventh-day Adventist Church bought 1,500 acres on the northern bank of Dora Creek where they built Avondale College (1897) and Sanitarium Health Food Company (1909).

The Avondale Estate is a Seventh-day Adventist owned estate opposite the Cooranbong shops. The estate is home to Avondale University, a Seventh-day Adventist tertiary education institution, the Sanitarium Health and Wellbeing Company, Avondale College Church, Avondale Memorial Church, a disused dairy farm and Avondale Retirement Village.

Note the "Australasian Missionary College" logo on Big Saint's Melbourne Cup cover. About that time, the name transitioned to the more user-friendly "Avondale College".

Here is a historical photograph of the Avondale College Chapel, taken about this time of year (when the jacaranda trees are in splendid bloom), year unknown — perhaps 1960s, in the era when Big Saint's Melbourne Cup covers were being created. This was the hall where general assemblies of the students and teaching staff occurred, and functioned as a focal point of life at the college.
Avondale College Chapel, 1960s?
Avondale College Chapel, 1960s?
The architecture, campus design, facilities, and even the name of this educational institution, have evolved dramatically over recent decades, as reflected in its current title "Avondale University".

3UZ now "RSN Racing & Sport Radio" is an Australian radio station. Currently owned and operated by thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing bodies of Victoria, it broadcasts a sports radio format to Melbourne, and to much of Victoria through various repeater stations. First broadcast as 3UZ, when owned by Oliver J Nilsen & Co, on 8 March 1925, it was in 1986 sold to the state's racing bodies. Today, the majority of the station's programming is dedicated to coverage of thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing.

I remember very well Bert Bryant's horse racing calls in the 1960s & 1970s. :D
