Ebay sellers per_4955 and jaer-313 selling forgeries

Post by blue-within-blue »

Seller per_4955 has several obvious laser-printed forgeries falsely listed as genuine. My knowledge isn't wide enough to spot them all, so if anyone can see other lemons in his listings, please add them here. Just a few which I spotted :

Nederland genuine 2-horz.jpg
Ebay item # 203958267756

I know nothing of Turkish philately, even less about the overprints, but given the starting price of £3,400 I'd be wary of this lot https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203969037119
s-l1600-1.jpeg
Quite apart from the obvious staining to the stamp, it doesn't feel worth that much money.

And all these items are being dispensed from a council house in Aberdeen.

Also the feedback of this seller is set to private.

Many of the stamp items have been “sold” and relisted several times. Some obvious forgeries as shown above, and common stamps listed at crazy prices.

Avoid!

His listings give a business address in Edinburgh, so I alerted the local Trading Standards team recently, and received a quick reply. Their initial view was that the address may be false, but presumably Ebay can give them details of the bank account which payments are going into.

They asked for details of why these listings appear counterfeit, and I'm hoping that the glaring differences in print quality in the 3 photos which I posted here will be enough for even a non-collector to see.

Seller on this falsely claims he is located in Australia. ebay do not approve that.

It appears that seller ID 2014_surplus is the same scammer as ID per_4955. Identical laser-printed forgeries, and each listing showing a false seller location aligned with the origin of the stamp.

Plenty of fake GB stuff on there too that are in danger of passing muster to the unwary.
2014_surplus fake GB SG 265
2014_surplus fake GB SG 265
The above 10/- SG 265 has been sold before for around £34 so not sure if it has been returned and he's trying again or if it was just a pretty poor shill bid. He has sold similar fake GB £1 Green SG 266's and at least one has been offered on eBay again by the new buyer.

Suspect it will fool quite a few sadly.

Also listed and ended already before when he hadn't quite got the printer working properly this left a nasty tell tale horizontal line to the CDS cancel on this rather crafty phishing attempt on the GB 10/- SG 183 ( date stamp innocently indicating it may well be the far scarcer SG 177/a ).

'Selling' for £38 appears to have not fooled many.

Maybe SG regards it as a dubious issue?

These 'stamps' don't even carry the name of the country they belong to, so I doubt they can be considered an official issue. If they were postally used they couldn't be for international postage because they do not respect UPU rules, maybe they had some kind of internal use

Thanks for the reply Andrea

Yes , they don’t have the “Helvetia” inscription like other contemporary Swiss stamps.

If they are Cinderellas then €4500 is a fortune!

These are 1912 forerunners of Pro Juventute stamps from Switzerland.
Genuine used copies are very pricey so they should never be bought without certificate.
Mint copies are also rather pricey as well.

These are listed in Zumstein as precursors to the PJ stamps. They were fund-raisers and were permitted to be used on letters but had no franking value. The numbers in Z are I-III with the 1913 one numbered 1.

Good morning Andrea

This Pro Juventute stamps where designed as official postage stamps in Switzerland.
In fact the verry first "Charity-stamps" of Pro Juventute, known as the " pre-runners"

Here a part- article of Richard Hall, member of the American Swiss Philatelistic Association, published in Lynn's Stamp News.

Quote:

"The Pro Juventute Foundation was formed in 1912 as an advocate for children’s needs and rights from some 3,000 local and specialized child welfare organizations that existed in Switzerland at that time.

Taking a clue from other postal administrations that had issued semipostal stamps for charities, the Pro Juventute Foundation asked permission of the Swiss postal administration in 1912 to issue charity stamps during the holiday season to benefit the foundation, hoping that people would use the stamps on their greeting cards.

Unfortunately, the request came too late for the postal administration to issue the stamps, so the foundation had three labels (one in each of the three principal languages spoken in Switzerland) printed and sold for 10 centimes both at post offices as well as privately.

Because the labels had no franking value, they are not listed in the Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue. However, the Swiss catalogs do list them. "

Hi Peter

Thanks for this exhaustive explanation. It looks like my supposition was correct, i.e. these are not stamps (no franking value) but labels affixed in addition to regular stamps, so more Cinderella like.

It would be interesting knowing if these labels had to be officially cancelled in the post office or if it happened just by chance, like for Cinderellas

ID 2014_surplus recently gave 3 positive feedbacks to ID per_4955, and there are several cheap stamps in his sold items list which are now back on sale. So it is pretty clear that the accounts are linked and there is shill bidding and bogus feedback going on.

I have bought one of his obviously pixelly counterfeits, and will log this as an Ebay "not as described" return once it arrives.

Looks like new seller ID jaer-313 could be another incarnation of this Aberdeen-based scammer. His items on sale show exactly the same pattern of high-priced computer-printed counterfeits plus a few worthless genuine stamps to make him look like a legitimate seller and rack up bogus feedbacks via shill sales. He already has feedback from ID per_4955 for selling a worthless common stamp for several pounds.

What do the Aussie experts think of this one?

He has the only £2 Roo in history to possess a slogan machine cancel used only on letters and postcards. And printed on 80 gsm copy paper it appears.

£2 was over a week's wages, and these were used only on VERY heavy parcels and telegrams etc.

Same crude MO this jaer-313 is using as the fakers above.

Today I received the counterfeit sold by scammer per_4955 ;
Ebay Aberdeen scammer 3.jpg
The envelope showed the same false sender address as on my Ebay payment receipt ; a street number in Glasgow which doesn't exist. But after I submitted a refund request, the return postage label supplied by Ebay shows the same Aberdeen postcode as in his business seller details ; the council estate at AB16. So I have again alerted the Trading Standards officer in Aberdeen (not Edinburgh as I mistakenly said previously).

The name on the label is EDDIE ERDEM. ID per_4955 has buyer feedbacks given by a now banned account edrd08 ; this ID previously made its feedback private, probably again due to the negative feedbacks received. So this looks like yet another account belonging to the same scammer - edrd seems too close to Eddie Erdem to be a coincidence.

Swift action for once by Ebay after I reported his threat. Two accounts just NARU'd :
Capture - ebay aberdeen scammer NARU.JPG
Capture - ebay aberdeen scammer NARU 2.JPG
As for how much these scammers make, flipping burgers wouldn't come close. I just added up the sold items on the 4 accounts which appear to be linked. From mid-May to early August, it totals over £8000 of sales. And there are probably more IDs we haven't yet spotted. Certainly worth the minor threat of prosecution, and the inconvenience of occasionally having to set up a new Ebay account.

I have alerted the local police, but not sure if there is a clear enough threat for them to do anything? Best hope is probably a visit from the Trading Standards team.

In an interesting development, the local Police contacted me within a couple of days of me reporting the "I know where you live" message sent by ID per-4955. It was pretty minor, as threats go, so I'm hoping that the Police may be more interested in the fact that I mentioned he has scammed ££thousands out of unwary buyers.
