Do the Stamp Markets & stamp shops in Lisbon still operate??

Post by jkrabbenbos »

Is there any collector from Portugal that can help me out?

I read on the web that due to renovations of the building and redevelopment into small shops the stamp (and coin) market in the Mercada da Ribeira in Lisbon (Portugal) on the Sunday morning possibly does not exist anymore. What is the current status?

Next month I'm going to Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto in Portugal for holidays. And if possible want to browse through albums and other philatelic stuff every now and then. Tips for other locations are also welcome.
Kind regards,
Jan

I have found the following link with some information: https://www.thelisbonconnection.com/mercado-da-ribeira-lisbon ... ionadores/

Just the intro of the article:
Old Mercado da Ribeira Lisbon (Market near the river), flea market Feira da Ladra & coin and stamp collectors

On every Sunday morning from 09:00 – 13:00, the second floor of the old market Mercado da Ribeira (Market near the river since 1882), is reserved for coin and stamp collectors.

That looks absolutly brilliant. Have taken the link and saved as bookmark.

I will be going to Lisbon in the near future and will get back to you. That looks like a live link so I would guess it still exists but of course I will check it out.

I'm in Lisbon in the middle of April and plan to go to the market. I will make pictures and write something about it, if it still exists.

I'm in Lisbon today and was at the Mercado da Ribeira market. Although completely renovated and opened last year, the coin and stamp market is still there on the Sunday morning. It has been moved from the central hall to the hall on the right (from entrance point of view) and takes place between the closed fruit and fish stalls. Most stamp related stalls are focussed on Portugal and its former colonies. And I saw a few Spanish and topical stamps around.

I made some photos, but was later asked by security not to make pictures. The central hall is now a very nice food court with excellent food, so it is really worth to go there if you are in Lisbon.

Image
On the right normally fish is sold  It still smelled fishy.

Now just need to convince the wife that a visit to Lisbon would be worth her while.

Is there anymore stamp dealers or markets in portugal?

Would just love to know. Found a nice little collectables dealer in Tomar who sells stamps if anyone interested will post address and pics here.

One of the dealers on the market is Montra Filatelica (http://www.montrafilatelica.com.pt), who gave me his flyer with some information. We are staying on the Rua da Prata in Lisbon and there is a stamp shop just around the corner in the Rua da Assencao. And I spotted a dealer in a building on the third floor close to the Rossio station (Rua 1o Dezembro 101, 3o).

I have not yet been inside the shops yet. If you speak Portuguese it is an advantage as most of the people speak only a little English.

And for your wife there is enough to do in Lisbon! Very nice city, lots of museums and lots of other things to do, including shopping. Really a must see capital in Europe.

EDIT: @collectordave, I just browsed a bit on the net and found this web site: http://www.cfportugal.pt/index.php?option=com_weblinks&view= ... &Itemid=12, with a list of dealers in Portugal. Might be interesting also for dealers and markets elsewhere in Portugal.

Thanks for the pictures and info! I don't see me visiting Lisbon in the future, but if I am I will take a look.

Allways nice to see stamp bourses/markets in other countries. Every year I go to Essen in Germany (may 7-9 this year), I have been to Antwerp in Belgium once and I visited 2 small markets in Bangkok.

@Stewie1980, I will go to the Essen stamp fair too this year. Have not been to the Antwerp fair yet, but occasionally visit stamp fairs in the Netherlands. And when on holidays always look around.

Hi,

Thanks Mark for the information.

Looks like we'll be missing the Sunday stamp market, our arrival is Sunday evening.

I'll try to use this visit to purchase some local catalogs for Portugal and colonies and perhaps for Spain and colonies.

Anything recommended?

Cheers,

Carmel

We were in Lisbon and Porto for last Christmas and New Year, and forgot to check this market out - our hotel was immediately opposite this Mercado. :)

Hi,

Visited the Filatelia do Chiado. A shop on the Rua do Carmo in Lisbon.

They had mostly Portugal and colonies. Some attractive material there, and I purchased two covers (one of which I have posted in my Odds and Ends thread and the second soon to follow).

I also purchased two local catalogs issued by Mundifil. One for Portugal: Selos Postais e Marcas Pre-Adesivas (2018 32nd edition) and the other for its colonies: Selos Postais Colonias Portuguesas (2015 7th edition).

The catalogs include many color illustrations (it appears that all stamps are illustrated) with much information regarding varieties, issues and reprints. Also pairs, blocks and covers for the early material. Unfortunately (for me) it's in Portuguese.

Cheers,

Carmel

Visited the market twice now.

BRILLIANT!

Picked up two catalogues as mentioned elsewhere but now called Afinsa.

Missing this christmas, not allowed to take grandchildrten to a collectors market so far away. But a good variation in the market. (Mostly portugal and colonies obviously but coins are big in Portugal)

Interesting old thread.

Liked this comment from 2015:

“I made some photos, but was later asked by security not to make pictures.”

Really? Can you imagine them making the same request today with everyone snapping away on their smartphones? Or do Portuguese security have nothing better to do?

Anyone have current pictures of the market?
My address has changed and is available upon request. I collect: USA, Canada, F1, soccer, flags, maps, cats, space and anything else WW that's cool. Want list - http://www.Wishlistr.com/Britjag

Even then it felt surreal when asked me not to take pictures. The Mercado is a tourist attraction even without the stamp market.

2 weeks ago I was in Lisbon - unfortunately onyl from Wednesday to Saturday :-( So I missed the stamp market. But I was at the Mercado (very nice food :-) )and saw e.g. a advert poster, which informs about the stamp market. And I am sure that this is a nice location also for a stamp market.
