Hi Roni.
There are two boards for asking questions, you'd get more visibility there.
This is just a welcome board really

Also, check how to load pictures - pressing ,'place inline' will get rid of that ugly Attachments box :D

Hello,

I'm Peter Schwartz, collector and philatelic researcher/author. Thanks for the add, glad to be here. My alias reflects just one of my collecting interests, that being the earliest of the US taxpaid cigar stamps (1864–1866). In 2020 I published a book about the origins, tax laws, use, and counterfeiting of these stamps. And my avatar reflects my long-time interest in Lincoln iconography.

Looking forward to perusing the boards. Looks like I'm a little late to the party, but "better late than never." Or perhaps I should leave that assessment to the veteran members of this group. :D

I first joined this forum in 2010 when I quite frankly didn't know much about stamps. A lot has changed since then and I stopped using this forum for a few years. The photobucket fiasco didn't help. In the meantime I have been building my Canadian, US, German, GB and Commonwealth collection through online auctions. I have a great little Canon LiDE 400 scanner and I'm ready to start posting again. I know some of you have been here a lot longer than 12 years and I hope some of you remember me.

Hello, stampboarders -

I am Jeff from Toronto, Canada. Started collecting as a kid; came back to the hobby during Covid and have been working on upgrading my collection ever since.

My collecting focuses are New Zealand, Canada + Provinces, and KGVI-era Commonwealth. I would like to start a World Cup-focused thematic collection, too.

Looking forward to learning from this community and happy to be here.

I am happy to hear that your collection of Canada, USA, Germany and the Commonwealth countries has increased and that you are willing to show them to us. :)

Hello everyone,

I'm Eric.

I used to collect when I was a little kid, given my dad collected a bit as well.

After many years, I thought it could be fun to re-kindle that activity for 4 main reasons:

1) It's something I can share with my kids, since I'm now a father.
2) It's an "offline" or "tangible" activity. More and more our lives are becoming very digital. Having activities in the "tangible" world is healthy.
3) I have the collector's gene. So I have a calling to collect something.
4) I like collecting stamps!

So, even though I delved into stamps when I was young, I consider myself a beginner collector. I've never used a catalog (I am using one now: I subscribed to the Yvert & Tellier online catalog), and don't know the jargon or almost anything for that matter. But I have already started doing some research, watching YouTube videos, and reading some forums.

Regarding the forums. I didn't know which one to use. So I Googled them and selected the ones that came up first organically. Then I ensured they were active and that threads would be answered quickly (a sign of enthusiasm). I chose the three main ones and signed up for them. In all three, I'm using this same introductory post, to save me some time (I hope that's fine with all, and within guidelines).

I'm currently collecting Argentina, France, and Portugal. But will soon add the US and the UK to that list.

I'll collect by country, in chronological order. My idea is to have a collection of MNH and one of Used stamps per country. I'm not sure if that's doable, but that's my beginner's idea.

I leave you three stamps I like from my small collection. Hope you enjoy:

Looking forward to participating.

Hello everyone. My name is Bob. I started collecting stamps when I was younger but didn't keep up with it. But now that I'm older I've been getting more excited about it. I found my old collection and started going through it recently. I mostly collect US stamps from the late 1800s and early 1900s. I look forward to getting to talk with all of you. :D

Greetings from Brisbane, Australia!

I'm over 70 and have collected stamps off and on since I was a kid, here and in the UK. I have also inherited my m-i-l's collection of about 40 albums.

Over the years, I've had calligraphy and kids' books published. I'm currently writing a new one on 'small things', including stamps I own and find fascinating, and that I can later show to kids in school visits. It may never be published, but I'd love to include some revenue stamps, US or elsewhere, if anyone would like to swap for some Australian or UK postage varieties I may have (quite possible), or any in particular from around the world...or a general mix, or...

The revenue stamps just have to be easy to read/photograph...used, unused, damaged, stuck to something: Cigarette, tobacco product, cigar tax; document tax; wine, beer liquor; stock transfer; feeding stuff; playing card...anything interesting.

Best wishes to all.

Hello and welcome.

I don't have the patience for calligraphy, but I do use fountain pens.. Perhaps you'd like to peruse my thread on cursive handwriting - https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=80405 as I see at least a few handwriting styles brought to me via postage stamps.
I am a Penpaller and Stamp User. I send therefore I receive. I muse on letters and stamps at correspondencefan.blogspot.co.uk. I have a forum, A World of Snail Mail. I need to collect "Welt der Briefe" stamps from Deutsche Post.

Hello

I am Dirk (Spennemann). I used to be an active collector of German colonial era Stamps in the Pacific at which time I set up some identification pages on the web which are still running. At that time I also published a few articles in various magazines (on German colonial stamps, early Samoan stamps) and some academic journals (such as on mail run times between Berlin and Micronesia). I also collected newspaper stamps. Almost all have been passed on to family.

These days I am no longer collecting philately, but am very conscious of the contributions that philately can bring to the understanding of historic communications (see "An example of nineteenth century communications between town-based retail stores and the hawkers travelling on their circuit" APF News November 2017,8-12).

I am primarily an academic and have just joined the board as I am keen to tap into the collective memory and knowledge of this community.

Not sure what was "potentially dangerous" about that deleted link. Perhaps CMJ could elaborate somewhere?

I did browse the second article (about the Germania). It is full of detailed historical data, and doubtless is a valuable record for that reason. A few brief comments, as this thread is really just for new member introductions and welcomes.
• Refereeing/peer reviewing of such an article would likely have benefited the final version.
• Some early typos or awkward expressions would have been "fixed" (e.g. in the first paragraph: "deeded on letters" and "newly established of the German district administration").
• Bibliography. After the first citation of Deutsches Kolonialblatt, the large number of citations to subsequent monthly issues could surely be abbreviated — for example: Ibid., Juni 1913, vol. 24, pp. 554–557.
• Table 3. Underlined dates are presumably conjectural, as in voyages 53, 55 and 57, but no nearby explanation was noted.

Why not consider adding some Stampboards posts about Pacific philately, especially from the German colonial era? Probably a new thread would be appropriate, unless you can find a suitable existing thread (or another member can suggest one — I didn't find one with a quick search).

Hello :)
I am a collector from Poland interested in historical topics (e.g. anniversaries of battles, issued documents or other important events) and national symbols (e.g. coats of arms or maps). In addition to stamps, I also collect postcards, especially those issued in retro style, like engravings.
Currently, I am interested in postage stamps from areas with disputed international status, such as Transnistria or Abkhazia.
I am open to exchange stamps and postcards via post.
I have been reading topics from this forum for some time but now I have decided to register and start my adventure here!
Themes of interest - European wars and battles from the Middle Ages to the 19th century: especially the Napoleonic Wars and commemoratives of Napoleon Bonaparte, historical national heroes, european state symbols and maps. Currently also interested in postage stamps from Transnistria.
In exchange I can send you postage stamps, FDC or postcards in your subject (mainly Polish).

Hello and welcome. Have you heard of the postcard sending site that has also featured on some postage stamps - Postcrossing? Although not necessarily great for collecting specific postcards, it is still a wonderful project.
I am a Penpaller and Stamp User. I send therefore I receive. I muse on letters and stamps at correspondencefan.blogspot.co.uk. I have a forum, A World of Snail Mail. I need to collect "Welt der Briefe" stamps from Deutsche Post.

Hello :)
Of course I have heard about postcrossing and I know the website devoted to it, but when it comes to postcards, I mainly collect those that do not come from the postal circulation.

Hello Jontek in Lodz, Poland. That's Łódź, folks!
Welcome to Stampboards.

Here's a poignant anniversary commemorative that you probably know very well:

Poland, 1979: 40th anniversary of postal workers' resistance to Nazi invasion

Hello to Dewly in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. Welcome to Stampboards!

I suspect that the kind of definitions you have in mind are "basic" philatelic terms — is that correct?

There are quite a few on-line sites the explain basic philatelic terms. Here are links to just three of them:

• List by Simon Chandler, on the Empire Philatelists website:
https://www.empirephilatelists.com/blog/glossary-philatelic-terms-explained

• A list on the website of Warwick & Warwick:
https://www.warwickandwarwick.com/news/guides/philatelic-terms

• A list (from a USA perspective) on the Linn's Stamp News [Scott] website:
https://www.linns.com/insights/glossary-terms-disabled.html

What do you do if those three sources don't solve a particular problem you have? I would say that if you have a term or philatelic expression you want clarified, and you "can't get no satisfaction" from those three sources, make an enquiry in the Stampboards forum where "No question is too basic or silly, etc". Look at the smorgasbord of topics here:
https://www.stampboards.com/viewforum.php?f=29
Hope that helps!

Hello RogerE :)
Yes, I know this stamp and the monument that is presented on it. The monument and the historic post office building is located in the beautiful city of Gdańsk, I recommend visiting it as a tourist :)
Below I am sending you a scan of the stamp issued in 2019, commemorating the same event, but its 80th anniversary.
