I doubt that the design depicts an East African Black Slave but wonder why the inscription is worded like that. Most probably we will never know,

I agree; even if the translation is correct it does seem odd wording, so long after the supposed abolition of slavery.

To me the appearance of the native is of a Pacific Islander, not an East African,
