Here's one that turned up at the bottom of a box over the weekend, perhaps one for @RevRed?

Nice cover! Newmarket-on-Fergus = Cora Chaitlín in Irish, as per the postmark. [And, it's not "on" The Fergus, which flows through Ennis.]
The cover would have travelled via Ennis (Inis in Irish), the main town in Co. Clare. The postmark on the back is Inis Cláruithe = Ennis Registered.
Only 25p for a registered letter in 1975! Now I feel old.......

Yes, 25p did make me smile :D

For those who remember, this was Laskys (credit to this blog where the images are stored)

Cover received this morning - thank you. Delighted to have it. I collect Registration Labels too and didn't have a Newmarket-on-Fergus one :D

It came in a nicely cancelled cover also:

UK Cover: Scottish definitive hand cancelled Castle PO Northwich 26th July 2022.<br />Slogan: Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Glad it arrived safely and although out of issue period, the correct use of a GB 'E' stamp on cover will be as rare as hen's teeth.

It's also an interesting insight into the state of the current postal system, where a first class letter from UK to Ireland takes seven days to get there. Contrast that with the postcard I recently sent from Jersey to philexx in Germany which arrived within 48 hours. I wonder where the delay is in the system??

Registered cover from Footscray, Victoria, to New York in 1925 with 4 x 1d KGV definitive, 2 X 1d Kangaroo and a 1½d KGV which equates to 3d for the registration fee, + 3d for the letter rate to other countries and the 1½d for an additional ounce

Registered cover to New York

back Handwritten 3.jpg

Looking at the stamp surrounds and the back flap, it appears glue was used

Registered cover from Waikerie, Sth.Australia to Edmonton Canada , 1938
the 5d was the combined Registration and letter rate within Australia and the British Empire.
Registered cover to Canada

This one comes from the old gold mining town of Bulolo, Papua & New Guinea, to South Australia via Sydney, in 1952. The envelope has a hand- stamped return address. 2 X KGVI and a 1945 issue Duke and Duchess of Gloucester 2½d comm.
With the postal rates I'm not too sure with this one, someone will know for sure on Stampboards.
I think 3½d was the Letter rate in 1952, 3d paid for the registration fee and 3d for the airmail rate within Australia

Another Irish registered cover, but this time it's staying in my collection :D

From Dublin to Barbados in February 1927, it took 19 days to arrive. Which, coincidentally, is exactly the same time it took for a recent Registered envelope from Barbados to arrive with me. Progress, eh :?:
Scan 71.jpeg
Scan 72.jpeg
I'm guessing the 5d rate is correct for the time? Any experts out there can enlighten me on early Irish state rates?

The 'Ferguson' cover.
Sir John Alexander Ferguson remains Australia's greatest bibliographer as well as being a successful lawyer and later senior judge in New South Wales. This cover, sent from Rabaul on the 22nd March 1915, to the then plain John Ferguson at his barrister's chambers in Sydney, would have contained missionary material as part of Ferguson's research into this work in both the New Hebrides and New Guinea.
The envelope is a rarity in that it is a quadruple combination cover, there is one other illustrated in 'Gibbs GRI'.

First there is the Rabaul Registration label overprinted GRI 3d, secondly a pair of GRI 1d on 5 pf Marshalls Islands, the right hand unit having the variety 'space between 1 and d', thirdly a pair of 3rd setting NWPI 2 1/2d. Finally on the reverse the envelope is sealed by the Stephansort mail bag seal which was used at Rabaul during this period for enclosures of value. Usual censor marking in red pen to left of envelope at front.

There are three known combination covers containing the Stephansort wax seal on the reverse, and I am lucky enough to have two of them.

Another very early 'War Cover' from Rabaul to Australia. Perhaps the first official registered cover from New Guinea bearing an 'OS' value. The first example of the 'Stephansort' Wax mail bag seal. The enclosure with the cover is from the Postmaster at Rabaul, Sergeant Moore, to the prolific collector Hambly.
Hambly front new scan.jpg

Hambly Back full.jpg
Hambly 1d on 3pf Moore Letter.jpg
Moore was arrested on his arrival in Sydney in possession of about 1/3rd of the stamps of German New Guinea, overprinted GRI, which he claimed in his letter to Hambly to have been exhausted!

Added this cool cover to stock this week for $A60 - stock 389WQ - Australia 1972 Registered cover to GOUGH WHITLAM franked with scarce franking 50c Navigator!

1972 addressed - The Honourable Mr Gough Whitlam, Parliament House, Canberra

UNIQUE!

Registered envelope addressed to

The Honourable,
Mr. Gough Whitlam,
C/- Parliament House,
Canberra,
Australia -

and was posted 4 days before Gough's historic win as Prime Minister on 2nd Dec 1972.

The envelope was sent from Moorvale Qld, by Registered Post and has "Attention Personal" on the front, and the letter writer was

Mr T.J. Holz,
1067 Little Cavendish Road,
Mt. Gravatt 4122,
Brisbane,
Queensland

Posted Moorvale 29 NO 72, and backstamped the same day with REGISTERED BRISBANE transit of same date, and Canberra arrival cds of 11am Thursday Nov 30, 1972. Whitlam’s office would have opened this on Thursday or Friday and on the Saturday Whitlam had swept into power! 7c postage and 50c Registered fee.

The 50c Dampier was in use in just a few month window for this fee, as the new higher Registered fee, before being replaced by the 50c Pioneer, so covers showing this rate using 50c Dampier are highly sought. And especially being addressed to Gough Whitlam! 8-)

The Registered fee was rising dramatically during this era, and had increased from a mere 20c in 1966, then to 25c in1968, then 30c on 1/10/1970, and this 50c on 1/10/71, then soon to 75c on 1/10/73, and $1 not long after on 1/10/74. A FIVE FOLD increase in less than a decade.

Whitlam campaigned under the memorable slogan "It's Time", an echo of Bob Menzies' successful 1949 slogan, "It's Time for a Change". Surveys showed that even Liberal voters approved of the Labor slogan.

Whitlam pledged an end to conscription and the release of individuals who had refused the draft, an income tax surcharge to pay for universal health insurance, free dental care for students, and renovation of ageing urban infrastructure. The party pledged to eliminate university tuition fees etc.

Whitlam won in a landslide, wiping Billy McMahon and the Liberals off the map after 23 YEARS in power - a day or so after this cover arrived.

A fascinating piece of history combined with a very unusual and high cat postal rate! For anyone exhibiting this series, a sexy and eye grabbing addition.
