A small point:

The third example in the previous post where you identified the cancel as Trenton(?) should be Flin Flon, Manitoba.

Thank you Jan = Frank_King! Yes, that's now clear — Flin Flon it is!
Flin Flon is a small, relatively remote community in northwest Manitoba, about 760km northwest of Winnipeg.
The Wikipedia entry begins:
Flin Flon (pop. 5,185 in 2016 census; 4,982 in Manitoba and 203 in Saskatchewan)

Post by Frank_King »

To backtrack, here is some further information on the first issue (taken from the book Canada Special Delivery, by G.H.Davis):

Issue date: June 28, 1898. Quantity: 3,667,500

Plate Numbers: 1,2
Plate Number 1 prepared June 23, 1898 and re-entered December 9, 1913
Plate Number 2 prepared August 27, 1920
(This explains the dates for SG1, 2, 3) .

Plate Size:
Plate Number 1 - 50 subjects (5x10)
Plate Number 2 - 100 subjects (10x10)

Pane Size:
Plate Number 1 - 50 subjects (5x10)
Plate Number 2 - 50 subjects (5x10)

Imprint Text:
Plate Number 1 - OTTAWA No. 1 (The printing order numbers are not always present)
Plate Number 2 - T-9 OTTAWA No. 2 - 922F
There is also a guideline arrow running through the W of Ottawa which was where the pane of 100 was guillotined into sheets of 50.

Colour: The first issue appears in various shades of green. There are at least four distinct shades as follows:
Blue-green (Confined to early printings from Plate 1)
Green
Dark Green
Light Green (Worn plate)
Other than the above four shades, further categorization becomes a rather subjective process reflecting the eye of the beholder's bias.

Papers: Two papers were used - buff and white.

Design: (Horizontally x Vertically)
31.5 mm x 23.5 mm
32 mm x 23.5 mm
32 mm x 23 mm

If I understand the above, Plate 1 can be blue-green or green or ?. This implies that it is impossible to distinguish SG1, 2, and 3 solely by colour. In fact it may be impossible without a plate number imprint. The above also implies that the first issue can exist with a straight edge (but only plate 2). See figures below.

A bit of further information on the first issue. This is from "The Postage Stamps and Postal History of Canada" by Winthrop S. Boggs (1945, reprinted 1974).

"After fifteen years of use the plate was completely re-entered (December, 1913), the work being so skilfully done that no varieties of importance have been noted. Impressions from the re-entered plate are somewhat deeper in color, and this may have been the source of the theory that there were two dies."

And later in a note about plate 1: "The shading around the numerals "10" becomes less as the plate wore."
and about the re-entered plate: "The shading is strong due to re-entering of all subjects."

For colours he gives: "Plate 1: Yellow Green; Plate 1 re-entered: Dark Green; Plate 2: Blue Green." These colours are at odds with the information in the book by Davis.

Thank you Jan = Frank_King for sharing that information from reference books that most of us (myself included) don't have access to.

Is there any enlightening comment about the seemingly mysterious "overprinted" characters near the plate number imprint?

Ubobo.R.O. wrote: 18 Aug 2022 18:44 Two questions for Mister E.
Wouldn't a surcharge be +10 ?
Isn't this a revaluation ?
Good comment/observation, thanks Puffin = Ubobo.R.O.

I normally try to use the terms as follows:
Overprint — a printed text or image added to a stamp after the stamp was printed, but not including a face value
Surcharge — a printed face value added to a stamp after the stamp was printed.
Both these terms are familiar from usage in Stanley Gibbons [SG} catalogues. Where printed text or image and a face value are added after the stamp was printed, SG refers to this as a surcharge, whereas I prefer to call it an overprint and surcharge.

I think revaluation is not normally used in SG catalogues. That said, I think it is a more precise term than "surcharge", and therefore more informative. Within the range of instances of "surcharge" used in SG catalogues, a large subset could be more informatively termed "revaluation".

Examples
Official overprint on Special Delivery
O.H.M.S. = On His Majesty's Service
Canada, 1950: 10¢ Special delivery, Official [O.H.M.S.] (SG OS20), block of four
Canada, 1950: 10¢ Special delivery, Official [O.H.M.S.] (SG OS20), block of four
SG says: "No. S15 overprinted as Type O3 [O.H.M.S.] but larger" (my bold)
.
Surcharge 10 = 10¢ on Special Delivery
Canada, 1939: 20¢ Special delivery surcharged 10(¢) (SG S11), block of four
Canada, 1939: 20¢ Special delivery surcharged 10(¢) (SG S11), block of four
SG says: "Surcharged with Type S.7 [10 with three bars, left and right]"
As Puffin suggests, this is a revaluation, as the resulting stamp paid 10¢ Special delivery, not 30¢.
.
Overprint and surcharge on 1932 airmail stamp
Canada, 1932: 5¢ airmail of 1930 overprinted
OTTAWA CONFERENCE 1932 and surcharged 6¢ (SG 318), block of four
Canada, 1932: 5¢ airmail of 1930 overprinted
OTTAWA CONFERENCE 1932 and surcharged 6¢ (SG 318), block of four
SG says: "Air. No. 310 surcharged with T79".
Once again, the "6(¢)" is a revaluation, so the resulting stamp paid 6¢ airmail, not 11¢.
The text about the conference makes this an overprint.

Overprint changing intended service, with implicit added tax of 1¢
Canada, 1915: War Tax overprinted on 20¢ postage (SG 226), used
Canada, 1915: War Tax overprinted on 20¢ postage (SG 226), used
SG says: "These stamps were intended for tax purposes, but owing to ambiguity
in an official circular dated 16 April 1915, it was for a time believed that their use
for postal purposes was authorised. The position was clarified by a further circular
on 20 May 1916 which made clear that Nos. 225/7 were for fiscal use only."
That comment is silent on the implicit 1¢ tax added to the face value of these stamps,
to help offset war costs. Thus the overprint "WAR TAX" was an implicit surcharge.

In contrast to SG, Arpin Philately (for example) says:
"Canada War Tax Stamps were issued between April 15 1915 and December 1916.
A War Tax stamp is an added tax in addition to regular postage; it is very similar
to a semi-postal stamp, but whose use is mandatory rather than optional for some
period of time. The added revenue was used to defray the costs of war."
https://www.arpinphilately.com/cat/canada-stamps-mr-war-tax

Surcharge clarifying the face value
The British 3d and 6d lilac QV definitives of 1883 were very pale, and the face value
was difficult to read, so they were issued with a large font surcharge in carmine
clarifying/reiterating the face value.
Great Britain, 1883:QV 6d on 6d lilac (SG 162)
Great Britain, 1883:QV 6d on 6d lilac (SG 162)
This is a surcharge that is not a revaluation.
.
It seems that surcharge = "charge on/over" (literally), using French suron. Compare overprint = "print on/over".
But the question for surcharge is: "on what?"
• If it's "onto the face value", then it's an added impost, as Puffin suggests.
• If it's "onto the design of the stamp" (apparently SG usage), it parallels "revaluation".

Sometimes a surcharge appears with a + sign, making clear that it's an addition to the underlying face value:
.
France, 1959: 25f Marianne with Frejus overprint
and 5f surcharge for Frejus flood victims support.
Postage 25f, charity 5f.
The surcharge makes this is a "semipostal"
(SG 1451, Sc B336, Yv 1229)
France, 1959: 25f Marianne with Frejus overprint
and 5f surcharge for Frejus flood victims support.
Postage 25f, charity 5f.
The surcharge makes this is a "semipostal"
(SG 1451, Sc B336, Yv 1229)
.
Do these comments prompt readers to make a re-evaluation of the terms? ;)

Canada, 1942: 16¢ Airmail Special Delivery (SG S13, Sc CE1)
Used, with barest trace of a duplex cancel at top left
This example would be described as "very fine used"
That's desirable if you want an example where the cancellation
doesn't obscure any of the design. However, it lacks any sense
of postal history, and the service performed by the stamp.

In contrast, this example also deserves at least a :fine used",
but it has enough information in the cancellation to convey
a real sense of postal history, and indications of the service performed.

Judging by the low numbers of this stamp on eBay, it appears to be quite uncommon.

.
An opinion: the "very fine used" examples have less postal history information and character than those with legible post marks. To further illustrate that point consider this block of 16¢ Special delivery stamps:
Canada, 1942: B4 16¢ Special delivery (SG S13, Sc CE1)
4x "blackout cancels"
Canada, 1942: B4 16¢ Special delivery (SG S13, Sc CE1)
4x "blackout cancels"
Blackout cancels were used to suppress information about the postal service (origin, date, frequency of service, etc) when it was feared that in the prevailing wartime conditions such information would aid the enemy if the mail fell into enemy hands.

Canada 17¢ Airmail Special Delivery 1943:
SG S14 = Sc CE2 (Type S9.2)

Subject: Plane flying to left

On-cover usage

Several examples shown here are defective in one way or another. They show us a representative sample of surviving covers from the era (mid-1940s to early 1950s), and as such give us insight into aspects of the social and postal history of the period. The question for the individual collector becomes: Do I want to include in my collection items that have various obvious defects but document social/postal history of the period?

Thanks Philip = PhilipAdams, glad you're enjoying them.
They come from an era when finely engraved traditional artistic designs were the unquestioned standard.

Canada 17¢ Airmail Special Delivery, 1946:
SG S16-S17 = Sc CE3-CE4
Canada Type S11

Subject: Plane Flying to Right

Canada, 1946: 17¢ Airmail Special Delivery (Type S11)
SG S16-S17 = Sc CE3-CE4
Canada, 1946: 17¢ Airmail Special Delivery (Type S11)
SG S16-S17 = Sc CE3-CE4
.
The distinction between these two varieties is in the accent on the second E of EXPRES.
The first variety has the circumflex accent — EXPRÊS; the second has the grave accent — EXPRÈS
Detail of SG S16 = Sc CE3
Circumflex accent on Ê in EXPRÊS
Detail of SG S16 = Sc CE3
Circumflex accent on Ê in EXPRÊS
Detail of SG S17 = Sc CE4
Grave accent on È in EXPRÈS
Detail of SG S17 = Sc CE4
Grave accent on È in EXPRÈS
.
In practice, I find it necessary to use magnification to determine which accent is present on any example
of this design. My 2018 Stanley Gibbons catalogue Commonwealth and British Empire Stamps 1840-1970
distinguishes significantly between these two varieties:
.
Circumflex: SG S16 mint £4.50, used £9.50
Grave: SG S17 mint £12.00, used £7.50
