It is notable that Pakistan celebrates its Independence Day on 14 August, so yesterday was Pakistan's 75th Independence Anniversary. Sorry I missed noting that yesterday.

The UAE celebrated its 50th Anniversary on 2 Dec 2021.
His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, declared 2021 as The Year of the 50th to commemorate 50 years since the nation's founding in 1971. Running from 6 April 2021 to 31 March 2022, this celebration coincides with Expo 2020 Dubai.

oz-36-Tassie-Cable-set-U.jpg
Australia 1936 The Goddess Amphitrite presides over the undersea telephone cable between Tassie and Victoria.

Wikipedia wrote:In ancient Greek mythology, Amphitrite (Ἀμφιτρίτη) is sea goddess and wife of Poseidon and the queen of the sea. She is a daughter of Nereus and Doris (or Oceanus and Tethys). Under the influence of the Olympian pantheon, she became the consort of Poseidon and was later used as a symbolic representation of the sea.

When Poseidon desired to marry her, Amphitrite, wanting to protect "her virginity", fled to the Atlas mountains. Poseidon sent many creatures to find her. A dolphin came across Amphitrite and convinced her to marry Poseidon. As a reward for the dolphin's help, Poseidon created the Delphinus constellation.

Amphitrite's offspring included seals and dolphins. She also bred sea monsters and her great waves crashed against the rocks, putting sailors at risk. Poseidon and Amphitrite had a son, Triton who was a merman, and a daughter, Rhodos (if this Rhodos was not actually fathered by Poseidon on Halia or was not the daughter of Asopus as others claim). Bibliotheca (3.15.4) also mentions a daughter of Poseidon and Amphitrite named Kymopoleia.

One of the few times the austere secular Post Office of Australia deviated into exotic religious figures!

Puffin says this cover shows Protected Animals

Airmail cover: Berlin, East Germany to Thursday Island, Australia, 25 June 1985
with cachet: Vom Aussterben bedrohte Tiere
Franked with 10pf, 20pf, 50pf stamps of that set
Taking the German "literally":
.
Vom Aussterben bedrohte Tiere
Of-the dying-out threatened animals
.
so I suggest a better, more explicit reading of the title would be
.
Animals threatened with extinction
.
We are used to euphemisms in such matters, when directness might be more effective.

I am surprised to see the cattle shown on one stamp.

Cows are slaughtered in vast numbers in many countries
(perhaps that is why they are here considered to be "near extinction"?)

Panterra, the species shown on the DDR stamp is banteng:
.
Wikipedia wrote:The banteng (Bos javanicus; /ˈbæntɛŋ/), also known as tembadau, is a species of cattle found in Southeast Asia. The head-and-body length is between 1.9 m and 3.68 m. Wild banteng are typically larger and heavier than their domesticated counterparts, but are otherwise similar in appearance. The banteng shows extensive sexual dimorphism; adult bulls are generally dark brown to black, larger and more sturdily built than adult cows, which are thinner and usually pale brown or chestnut red. There is a big white patch on the rump. Horns are present on both sexes, and are typically 60 cm to 95 cm long. Three subspecies are generally recognised...

The largest populations of wild banteng occur in Cambodia, Java and possibly in Borneo (particularly Sabah) and Thailand. Domesticated banteng occur in Bali and many eastern Indonesian islands (such as Sulawesi, Sumbawa, and Sumba), Australia, Malaysia and New Guinea. Feral populations are found in East Kalimantan and the Northern Territory (Australia). Domesticated populations are primarily used for their highly demanded meat, and are used as draught animals to a lesser extent. The wild banteng is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, and populations have decreased by more than 50% in the past few decades. Rampant poaching (for food, game, traditional medicine and horns), habitat loss and fragmentation and susceptibility to disease are major threats throughout the range. Banteng are legally protected in all countries in their range, and are largely restricted to protected areas (possibly barring Cambodia). The banteng is the second endangered species to be successfully cloned, and the first clone to survive beyond infancy.

wales-machins-42vM.jpg
Wales: various "Machin" heads with the Welsh dragon logo included.

Wikipedia wrote:The Welsh Dragon (Welsh: y Ddraig Goch, meaning 'the red dragon') is a heraldic symbol that appears on the national flag of Wales. The oldest recorded use of the dragon to symbolise Wales is in the Historia Brittonum, written around AD 829, but it is popularly supposed to have been the battle standard of King Arthur and other ancient Celtic leaders. Its association with these leaders, along with other evidence from archaeology, literature, and documentary history, led many to suppose that it evolved from an earlier Romano-British national symbol.

During the reigns of the Tudor monarchs (themselves originally of Welsh origin), the red dragon was used as a supporter in the English Crown's coat of arms. The red dragon is often seen as symbolising all things Welsh, and is used by many public and private institutions. These include the Welsh Government, the Senedd, Visit Wales, numerous local authorities including Blaenau Gwent, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Rhondda Cynon Taf, and Swansea, and sports bodies including the Football Association of Wales, Wrexham A.F.C., Newport Gwent Dragons, and London Welsh RFC, while "the dragon's tongue" (Tafod y Ddraig) is the symbol of the Welsh Language Society. The Welsh Dragon is also one of The Queen's Beasts.

tibet-74-upu-M.jpg
Tibet 1974 Universal Postal Union centenary.

This set was issued by the Tibet Government-in-Exile, based in Dharamshala, India, and the stamps were accepted by the Indian Post Office for delivery of mail throughout the planet.

All worked fine, until the Chinese realised what was going on, and protested vigorously to India, at which point the Tibetans were asked to revert to using normal Indian stamps and cease their own issues.

cal-cvr-air-Oz-both.jpg
New Zealand 2009 "cal" (= personalised stamp) featuring the Tibet flag to remember the 50th anniversary of the Tibet Uprising against the oppression of the frumious Chinese invaders. Here used on an airmail cover to Australia, sent 3rd March 2011, and arrived on 8th March 2011.

Wikipedia wrote:The 1959 Tibetan uprising began on 10th March 1959, when a revolt erupted in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, which had been under the effective control of the People's Republic of China since the Seventeen Point Agreement was reached in 1951. The initial uprising occurred amid general Chinese-Tibetan tensions and in a context of confusion, as Tibetan protestors feared that the Chinese government might arrest the Dalai Lama XIV. The protests were also fuelled by anti-Chinese sentiment and separatism. At first, the uprising consisted of mostly peaceful protests, but clashes quickly erupted and the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) eventually used force to put down the protestors, some of whom had captured arms. The last stages of the uprising included heavy fighting, with high civilian and military losses. The Dalai Lama XIV escaped from Lhasa, while the city was fully retaken by Chinese security forces on 23 March 1959. Thousands were killed during the 1959 uprising, although the exact number is disputed.

Earlier in 1956, armed conflict between Tibetan guerillas and the PLA started in the Kham and Amdo regions, which had been subjected to socialist reform. The guerrilla warfare later spread to other areas of Tibet and lasted through 1962. Some regard the Xunhua Incident in 1958 as a precursor of the Tibetan uprising.

The annual 10th March anniversary of the uprising is observed by exiled Tibetans as Tibetan Uprising Day and Women's Uprising Day.

Dalai-holds-hands-with-Bruce.jpg
The Dalai Lama XIV's visit to Auckland, New Zealand, 2010.

Roger's mention of His Holiness the Dalai Lama XIV prompted me to recall my meeting with him, when he visited Auckland in 2010. This is the official group photo with the executive of Friends of Tibet: I am seated on His Holiness' left, holding hands with him.

On the Dalai Lama's lap can be seen a First Day Cover of the Tibet flag cals, which I had presented to him just a few seconds prior to this photo being taken.

The FDC was originally an unaddressed one, but I wrote His Holiness' name on it, with address shown as "Potala Palace, Lhasa, Tibet." When I gave it to him with the words "Your mail, Holiness!", he looked at it, and said "Ho ho ho, I haven't lived there for quite a while!"

The cover was jammed full of lots of the little "Help Free Tibet!" labels that I have been using on mail for some years.

Then he laid the cover flat on his lap. Realising that the photographer was about to snap the group photo, I was very tempted to grab the cover and rest it up against his tummy, so it would be clearly seen in the photo. But that would involve having my fingers 2 inches away from the Holy penis, which might have caused his bodyguards to intervene, or otherwise be a major breech of protocol. Besides, having handed over the mail to the addressee, it is no longer my prerogative to put my hands on it again.

So while I was dithering on how to resolve the situation, the photo was taken, which is why I am looking rather perplexed.

Since it's still Tibet Day, let's look at a controversial issue:
the 1950 "Official" stamps.

tibet-50-offics-1-karmanga-pair.jpg
Tibet 1950 (?) Official issue, 1 karmanga used pair.

This stamp, the 1 karmanga grey-black (which equals ⅓ trangka) (wrongly identified as 2 khakang by Flack) is presumed to have been issued in 1950, as part of a set of seven values. They are all inscribed "STAMP" in English, plus Tibetan text and values. This is a great contrast to all other Tibetan stamps of the pre-invasion period, which are all inscribed "TIBET" as the only bit of English.

Armand Singer's book mentions the controversy over these stamps, as some philatelists do not accept them as being authentic Tibetan stamps. Singer says: "No completely satisfactory theory as to the use or even genuineness has ever been proposed, but most Tibetan philatelists doubt their bona fides. In any event, there is no proof that they saw "Official" use, and not much more that they prepaid postage."

At the right of my photo above is the original advert from the Price List of Geoffrey Flack, noted Tibet dealer, for this pair. Geoffrey (see his obituary here) was an expert on Tibet issues, and having his imprimatur on it makes me feel comfortable with this unusual item.

Another from Tibet's controversial 1950 issue:
the "Official" stamps.

tibet-50-offics-1-sang-U.jpg
Tibet 1950 (?) Official issue, 1 sang used, with Lhasa postmarks.

This giant-size stamp (67 mm x 67 mm!), the 1 sang slate-grey (which equals 6⅔ trangka) is presumed to have been issued in 1950, as part of a set of seven values. They are all inscribed "STAMP" in English, plus Tibetan text and values. This is the top value of the set.

Geoffrey (see his obituary here) was an expert on Tibet issues, and having his imprimatur on it makes me feel comfortable with this unusual item. Geoffrey has authenticated the Lhasa postmarks, which give some assurance about this stamp.

Another seldom-seen Tibet issue:
the 1984 25th aniversary stamps.

tibet-84-25th-anniv-struggle.jpg
Tibet 1984 25th anniversary of struggle and reconstruction.

I have been unable to find any information on this rouletted set. Were they officially produced by the Tibet Government-in-Exile? The style gives the impression of a locally-printed letterpress issue, but they are seldom seen, so perhaps only marketed to Tibetans and not to international dealers.

Wikipedia wrote:Ganden Monastery (also Gaden or Gandain) or Ganden Namgyeling or Monastery of Gahlden is one of the "great three" Gelug university monasteries of Tibet. It is in Dagzê County, Lhasa. The other two are Sera Monastery and Drepung Monastery. Ganden Monastery was founded in 1409 by Je Tsongkhapa Lozang-dragpa, founder of the Gelug order. The monastery was destroyed after 1959, but has since been partially rebuilt. Another monastery with the same name and tradition was established in Southern India in 1966 by Tibetan exiles.

Early in 1996, after a ban had been imposed on pictures of the Dalai Lama, 400 monks at Ganden rioted. They were fired upon by PLA troops, apparently causing two deaths and several injuries, followed by the arrest of one hundred monks.

During the 2008 Tibetan uprising anniversary, Ganden Monastery monks participated in the mass demonstrations and protests which began on 10 March and spread throughout Tibet.

As of 2012 the population of monks has been reduced to about 400 monks.

The Ganden Monastery has been re-established in Karnataka, India by the Tibetan population in exile. The Ganden Monastery is in the Tibetan settlement at Mundgod. This settlement of Tibetan refugees is the largest of its kind in India and was first established in 1966, from land donated by the Indian government. In the Tibetan settlement near Mundgod are the Ganden and the Drepung Monastery. In 1999 there were about 13,000 residents. The Tibetan settlement consists of nine camps with two monasteries and one nunnery. They established a credit bank for farms, an agricultural institute and a craft center. Modern technology and communication technology are being introduced. The curriculum of the Ganden Monastery remains similar to the teachings of the pre-1959 Ganden Monastery. The Ganden Monastery Colleges Jangtse and Shartse have also been reestablished in India.
