Please take a look at this one. The weak frame on the top left hand corner has got me confused.

Looking at the letters and the O I lean towards a plate 10.

I have come across another that I think is from the black plates. This time plate 11. The shape of the O looks right for this and the flaw on the bottom margin fits as well.

The best I can do with such a fuzzy image is plate 17.

Hello Fred,
I too struggled with this one.
I narrowed it down to plates 56, 57and 60 - I hope.
Out of those I think 60 is nearest.
Best wishes,
Bill

Many many thanks Bill..
I drifted from plate 44 then 66/67 to end up 74...
I will pick it up for a plate 60 even if the 9 minus for the left of F doesn't convince me too much...
Kind regards
Fred

Hello Bill
Yes the imprimatur sheet seems to show the exactly same blur in the SW corner...
what makes it right for a plate 60

If you are a Penny Red fan, I see that the auction site Brixton Chrome has a bunch of them on their auction tonight. Prices seem really low. Auction closes at 10:30 Toronto time. I buy a lot there, and have never been disappointed. You can find it here. Pages 5 to 8 are all Penny Reds!!

Help with Plate number for this JB. It came to me with "36" on the back, but does not look like it to me. I cant match it anywhere. I see some breaks in the NE corner and frame lines and while I can match a J one one plate, but not the B and vice versa. Tks much

I think a Leeds special MX would be a correct identification of this.

I wonder if one of the experts could help with plating this one for me please?

It's a dealer's image so the best I can provide at this stage.

Thanks in advance...

Chrisb, You do need to sort out your scan quality. If you are still having problems with that after reviewing your scanner's manual, I expect there is an appropriate part of this forum that can help you.

Having said that, in this particular instance your scan appears to show the 'O' flaw, so I expect is from Plate 9.

According to R&J there are three types of the 'Leeds special' cross.
1. Leeds Special
2. Leeds special (large diamond)
3. Leeds special (small diamond)
Leeds mx.jpg
The first image is a Leeds Special cross .
( Note the concave outer cross sides, the almost closed outer cross loops, and the concave inner cross end plates.)

The other two are Leeds special (large diamond) crosses, which I believe is what Fred has.

I don't have an example of the Leeds special (small diamond).

[Note to moderator: Perhaps discussion of mx is best moved to mx thread.]

A lot of thanks Bill..I was taking it for so: a large diamond
even if Scott confirmed my own opinion about Leeds as you say the outer loops are with the "concave" a lot more pronunced in the Leeds special MX
Whatshowever many thanks again to you both.

Hey guys (and gals), I have this mint one, which I'm scratching my head about. I have been told that it is plate 8, but I'm not sure. Any guidance would be most appreciated. PS, this is my first post, so if I break any (or all) of the rules, please be gentle :)

Thank you for your guidance - both regarding the plating and the rules.

As to the rules, I spent about two hours reading through posts and guidance - and yet still broke some rules!!!
Could - and should - this not be simplified?
Simplified so a five minute read would clarify and simplify?

As to the stamp, if you could guide me as to why you conclude it is the plate you say, it would be appreciated (I always like to learn).

Thank you

The easiest way for beginners is to compare the check letters against the registration sheets, these can be found online at the PO museum site, but they are rather low resolution and not easy to search, but see attached, it takes some experience and practice. Better images on CDs of each plate and letter position can be purchase through stamp dealers such as Sturminster Stamps which makes the task much easier, there are many other plating aids available.
