Needs another one, as it isn't near enough the top for newbies to see it.

Re: How to generate "£" or "½d" symbols etc on a keyboard
A number of new and not so new members have been posting 2 1/2d for 2½d, and 1 1/2 etc, so it's time for another bump. I don't know whether this is laziness or sheer bloody-mindedness but it isn't necessary and it isn't good. If you can't remember the keystrokes, just copy the fractions to your desktop and copy/paste them into your threads!

I just made an amazing discovery on my mac, while typing on this forum!

A long gap this time, with few offences that I have noticed, but we'll have a bump anyway.

Re: How to generate "£" or "½d" symbols etc on a keyboard
If there are others like me that spend the majority of their time on a tablet (I use an IPad) there is a good app called “Alt codes”. Install app and it’s basically a clipboard to copy / paste symbols and works well for the ones that aren’t in apples set.

Just pointing out that anyone using an iPhone to type can add ½ (or any fraction) by just copy and pasting it from another source straight onto here.
(Apologies if this has already been suggested earlier in this thread)

Following up the previous post, on iPhone or iPad you can make this even easier by taking a few minutes to set up Text Replacement in Settings.

Re: How to make the '½' type symbols often used in stamp posting
There, and I was hoping it was going to be easy. Is it easier than I think?
You do first have to find the fraction so that you can paste it into the settings, don't you?

Re: How to make the '½' type symbols often used in stamp posting
Following Brit.Col’s advice is the best thing to do to save having to copy and paste each time. However, if you wish to copy and paste anything on an iPhone (probably the same on any smart phone) then what you do is hold down the screen over the word or image you want to copy.
A message will then come up giving you some options, including ‘copy’. Press that.
Then, in the document (for example on Stampboards) you want to use the copied symbol in, you just press down on the screen again in the text box and it will give you some more options. Just press ‘paste’ and then the symbol or image will appear in the new document.

Re: How to make the '½' type symbols often used in stamp posting
No, what I meant was that you had to find the fraction existing (easy for some examples, others less so) to paste it into the Settings. From then on, yes it's easy, just type 1/2 and Text Replacement will take care of it.GB 789 wrote: ↑11 Aug 2021 20:26Following Brit.Col’s advice is the best thing to do to save having to copy and paste each time. Re: How to make the '½' type symbols often used in stamp posting
Yes, you are correct, you do have to find a symbol of the fraction you are wishing to use and paste it into the Text Replacement setting.
However, just Google ‘fraction symbols to copy’ or something similar and you will instantly obtain lists of all the common ones.
For less common fractions Google ‘fraction symbol creator’ or something similar and you will find sites where you can type the numerator and the denominator and the site will return the symbol to copy/paste.
The method falls a bit short of a silver spoon but once you’ve got it set up it works a charm.

Timely bump for this topic as the use of "1/2" seems to be spreading across Stampboards like Covid through the third annual Anti-Vaxxers' Conference at the moment.

Another outbreak today.
Seems especially evident that many AMERICANS have no idea how to type either '½' or '£'
Send a man to the Moon .. no problem ... but type '½' in a hobby where it is used enormously - no chance!

Follow that and you can create the ⁰⁄₂ and ⁰⁄₄ or indeed any fraction including "improper" fractions such as ⁷⁄₉, ⁿ⁄₇, ³⁄₂ or even ⁽⁷⁺⁵⁾⁄₍₇₋₅₎
When would they be useful? No idea but they might be...

Or use Character Map ?
In Win 10;
Click on Start Menu and Scroll to Windows Accessories then click on Character Map.
Alternatively you can chose the character you require, click select and then Copy to place the character on the Clipboard and paste it into your post/document.

"Character Map" has been part of Windows for about 20 years or more. Probably right back to Win3.

I’ve probably been using a Mac for 15 of those years.
If I used character map in Win 3.1\98 I have forgotten, but then I did use Alt+171 type coding and learn HTML 3 at that time so it’s not surprising I’ve forgotten something!

There's an even quicker pop up character map in Windows - just press the "Win key" along with a "fullstop".
