Help with values of these battered, badly damaged old stamps please?
What does anybody think of this I have for sale?
I brought an old collection and this was inside.
I’m trying to find out more and get expert opinion…the book has lots of really old stamps and has writing inside of dates 1916 and looks very real and authentic.
Hope someone can help and I will reward for the right help.

Re: Help with US 3c George Washington stamp
Will need a hi-res scan of the back to determine the catalog number and value - if you can just scan the stamp area from the front and back (not the whole surroundings) it will be much helpful. A rough guess is that it is US Scott #65, issued in 1861. The centering is above average for this stamp therefore it may sell for about US $4. Can't be sure till I see the scan of the back for any 'Grills' - which affects the price significantly.

The stamp has toned perfs and a scrape across the front.
As Dave Benson says, worth very little in that condition.

Re: Help with US 3c George Washington stamp
Remove the last 2 zeros. A few pence on a GREAT day.
it is a common stamp and OBVIOUSLY very heavily damaged, foxed and with major abrasion on face.
The chances of being a better Grill are a million to 1.

All stamps with bits missing are worthless.
The remainder are worth about a penny each, on average, if you can find a buyer, which I doubt.

Yes another few quid there. You can almost buy a beer now.
This looks to be a kid's collection of WW1 era of 'the world's 100 most common stamps - and highly defective ones often included - at no extra cost' type
Do you still have libraries in the UK? Borrow a 'Stanley Gibbons Stamps Of The World' set, and your curiosity will be sated.
In philately these are 3 Golden Rules -
1. 'Old' does NOT automatically mean 'valuable'.
2. Condition is everything.
3. Refer to Rules #1 and #2.

Re: Help with cat number of US 3c George Washington stamp
Despite laws to the contrary, decreasingly common now.
And the likelihood of any of them having a complete SOTW in a single branch is very low; one may need to do a library sourcing request to gather volumes in from different county libraries, which could take months.
Some do have SOTW in reference, ie not to take away.
Even our philatelic society has decided not to spend on a new SOTW or Part 1, even in alternate years, because only 1 or 2 people (who fill the sales packet and therefore make money) ever consult them on a regular basis.
And whilst I agree that SG catalogues need to be supported, decreasing membership and income flows mean that funds are tight. Venue rental will increase this autumn because energy costs have increased (even if road fuel costs have now dropped nearly 17p/litre) and member numbers falling has not helped income.
Ian Billings - Norvic Philatelics - clearing Machins stock before Royal Mail burn them all, singles, booklets, booklet panes, regionals - lists here: or email/DM your general needs and I'll let you know whether it's worth sending a wants list.

I think it looks like a kids collection as my writing is bad because I couldn’t lean on the paper! Lol
I’ve seen some of the french ones go for a pretty penny like these two?

Re: Help with cat number of US 3c George Washington stamp
You see the 'teeth' on the bottom of this one? It should be like that on all four sides. Without them it is ruined.
NOW, if it is a $10,000-catalogue stamp you might get a few dollars, maybe even 20, for it as it is.
If it is a $20-catalogue stamp you'll be lucky to get a nickel.

OK, 2 things:
Speaking as a Board Moderator:
For the last time, read & follow this:

Secondly:
You have a used stamp in poor condition, issued 1862, catalogue value £3.50, real value a few pence.
To justify claiming it is valuable, you have shown a mint (unused) stamp. with a "10" overprint, from 1871, which was prepared for use, and never issued - catalogue value £3,000.
It's like claiming your VW Polo write-off is valuable by showing a picture of a perfect Golf R32.

I’m not claiming to know anything which is why I’m asking.
I am interested in the stamps and I like them so all good to me as it only cost me £5 and still more to look at.
Thanks everyone who helped an a beer it is!

Re: Help with cat number of US 3c George Washington stamp
Really great points!
But have you ever thought you could be wrong and it could be worth more than £3.50..because I sold the stamp for £80 that your talking about.
I value your points and opinions none!
I do believe that all the stamps together that I had was worth up to £250 and that is what I got so thanks.

Only saying what I got for them… I think they was worth £40 but got all in £330.
I’m not even a little knowledgeable about philately.. all I was saying to the other perfect stamp experts that was negative is they was wrong, it’s worth more than 1p to someone out there!
Stamps that old will be worth something one day I’m certain and you don’t need to be a stamp expert to guess this.
Just saying!

Firstly, I'd like to see evidence to back up the claim that they "got all in £330", but chances are I won't, and Glen's "Troll Spray" will be correct. But I'd LOVE to be wrong on that. Go on, prove it!
Secondly, "Stamps that old" will not necessarily be "worth something one day". I'm not a stamp expert and that is not a guess. Back in those days, there were no phones, no internet, no instant messaging services. So, if you wanted a reliable, easy, cheap way of communicating, you wrote a letter and stuck a stamp on it.
To help you accomplish this, postal services across the world printed stamps in runs of BILLIONS in many cases. They didn't issue new stamps every other day to commemorate the latest video game or some little-known person who fitted the right ethno-political profile but really didn't do much.
They kept the same design for years and decades and sold them for a couple of cents, centimes, pennies, pfennige, lepta etc - and in many or most cases that's all they're worth today in GOOD condition.

No, we wuz rite.
Common, defective Crap is crap - globally. This sorry lot was worth a few bucks globally. Invent all the silly fairytales you like, but it does not change that reality.
And YOU will be gone if you post one more attachment here, without adding it inline correctly as you were asked TWICE above already. Three strikes and you are out, Mr Troll.

£840 Sudanese pounds = $2.19 Australia, so the buyer I guess made a couple dollars profit
