'¼d Philp Butcher discount ticket' stamp - any information sought

We all have and handle these from time to time. "Back of book", Revenues, "Cinderellas", duty stamps and all kinds of other stamp like labels. Discuss them all HERE!

'¼d Philp Butcher discount ticket' stamp - any information sought

Post by David Smitham »

Good morning!

Whilst sorting through an estate lot I came across a used orange-red ¼d Philp Butcher discount ticket stamp, perf 11.

I suspect, but do not know, that it is of Australian origin and probably from around 1900/1905, as a similar scheme operated in New Zealand from 1901.

Despite a fruitless internet search, I am interested to learn more about Philp Butcher discount ticket stamps.

Were there any other denominations/colours, years of use and where in use, as well as to its value, which I sucpect may be around $20?

Can you help with the above information request, please?

Thank you.

David.

I guess the first question to answer is; are you looking for a person called Philp who was a butcher, of which several appear in internet searches, or a person called Philp Butcher?

I found a Catherine Philp Butcher in the 1920s in Victoria, listed in a government gazette.

These were issued in Wellington NZ, in three colours - red, blue and violet (scarcest).
Note mention of Discount Stamps here in 1911.

Another Wellington butcher - Symonds of Kent Terrace - also issued a very similar one as shown here.

This is the only copy of this one that I've ever seen.

I also note that a possibly unique block of four of the Philp red stamp sold in August 2023 at Auckland City Stamp's public auction for NZ$450 + fees.

The depth and breadth of knowledge on this board never ceases to amaze me.....
Collecting mint British Empire / Colonial up to the 1960s, Bridlington & East Yorkshire postal history, and wacky postcards.
