We all have and handle these from time to time. "Back of book", Revenues, "Cinderellas", duty stamps and all kinds of other stamp like labels. Discuss them all HERE!

Purchase Tax stamps on records

Post by adam78 »

Purchase tax stamps with various letter codes are occasionally found on records from the UK, latterly 45s although the first (and commonest) were on 78rpm records.

I'm still looking for the elusive blue XT stamp to complete the page. Let me know if you have one to part with.

For the 45rpm era, here are some examples I have, in date order.

Very unusual to find it on the sleeve rather than the label

Really interesting, thanks for that. Once upon a time, I made my living selling 2nd hand / collectors records, and although most of my trade was in later vinyl than this, I do recall seeing these sometimes. I assumed (if I thought about it at all!) that they were some kind of library marks.

Some of the rates are enormous! So 50 or 60% of the price of a single was tax :o .

Interesting that the final (?) drop to 25% (not far off today's VAT) was 1/1/63 - just coinciding with the Beatles explosion of teenage record buying. Would their impact have been less with a 50% premium on every single?

Question: No mention of LPs? How were they dealt with?
Collecting mint British Empire / Colonial up to the 1960s, Bridlington & East Yorkshire postal history, and wacky postcards.
