Post Your One Page Exhibit to Compete For My 5000th Post Giveaway

Posted: 17 Jan 2024 22:05
by Catweazle
5000th? Well, that sure came around fast! I signed up to this forum in my mid to late teens – still in high school – and now post this, my 5000th post on Stampboards, having embarked on my fourth decade of life.

Makes one muse on the fact that life can sometimes feel so short but, as Gandalf might say, let us not be concerned with such trivialising matters for “all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.

I started as a worldwide collector and recall the early days of ploughing through a beautifully massive bag of stamps given me by my great Uncle, after my grandparents gifted me a stamp album for my 10th birthday. Family and friends would save stamps from their incoming mail. I also visited Ian in Geelong when he still ran his little stamp shop, spending $2 here or $5 there, buying whatever I thought looked nice.

Then Ian sold up and moved on, and I turned to Lonsdale Street in the city during my lunch break but it wasn’t long before Tony, I think it was, who happens to be a member here too, moved on to focus on his online sales rather than pay rent for a brick and mortar shop.

Stampboards has been my go-to for information, questions and philatelic comradeship ever since and somehow I’ve withdrawn from the worldwide arena (sorry, Norm!) to explore more focused interests including the Chatham Islands, Molokai, Lord Howe Island, pre-decimal Australia, Great Britain, Greenland and other nordic countries. No idea really why those interests started, but there you go.

Serves me right actually, because somehow I’ve landed in some rather expensive areas meaning that I’ll probably never quite get the golden eggs; Hawaii, I’m looking at you!

And here we are, all of five thousand posts later. 8-)

Thanks to y’all who have patiently answered all my buggering questions, put up with my mistakes, recommended sources, shared your wisdom and items from your collections, encouraged my philatelic interests, conversed at length in writing, exchanged goods and been part of this ongoing journey. I wonder how many words we’ve typed over the years?

So it seemed a worthy, entertaining endeavour to share a freebie or two in honour of this wee little milestone. But you have to earn it, right?

Enter this  the One Page Stamp Exhibit.

That’s right, you heard me. Not one frame; I said the One Page Stamp Exhibit! So, not much room really. This means that in order to enter this competition, and thereby be in the running to win one of the three prizes pictured below, you need to post here a One Page Stamp Exhibit of your choosing that fits within a couple of bog basic guidelines outlined below, partly inspired by the American Topical Association.
  • Participation is open to ALL members with at least 60 posts, and who have been registered here for at least 60 days. Does that sound fair?
  • Your one page exhibit should be no larger than a single A4 page. What’s on that page is your call.
  • Exhibited items on that page are property of you, the exhibitor, from your collection(s).
  • All exhibits should be original and not ripped from what pops up on Google Images.
  • You can put it together on Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher or any image editing software you know of. Whatever, really. Or do it by hand if you’re a whizz like that. Upload it here on this thread as a large scan ideally – not so tiny so that we can’t read it! Work your magic and DM me if you’re not sure how to go about this. Perhaps I can give you some tips if you’re not sure.
  • That means, in case you’re wondering, that your one page exhibit could be constructed from scanned images electronically assembled, from a scan of a completed exhibit page, or a combination of the two.
  • Either portrait or landscape format.
  • The title of the exhibit must be obvious, ideally at the top, and do include a brief description that explains the subject and displayed item(s) required because we can't read minds. Consider that part of the exhibit on the page.
  • Judging based on creativity, aesthetics & philatelic interest. Make it fun, make it interesting, make it engaging. Maybe try something different. Although FYI I’m not an APF judge…
  • Have fun!
  • All entries due by Thursday, February 29th, 2024 (Why so long? Because the school term is about to begin and Term 1 is always mad for me and that gives you time in between your busy lives too to conduct your hobby).
I think that sounds alright. Let's go with that. Anyway, what’s the prize, you ask? Well, member gmoney already won the Penny black on account of his AFL tipping skills, so I’ll have to find something else to give away. Unfortunately, it’ll be a little less enticing. But free post to you so you don’t have to pay a ¢ent. Three prizes in all are up for grabs here because you're gonna make judging difficult for me, no doubt!

PRIZE ONE
1999 Lord Howe Island Local Courier Post FULL SHEET of 40 Stamps
1999 Lord Howe Island Local Courier Post FULL SHEET of 40 Stamps
1999 Lord Howe Island Local Courier Post FULL SHEET of 40 Stamps
PRIZE TWO

New Zealand 2000 Threatened Birds Sheet of 25x 40¢ stamps
New Zealand 2000 Threatened Birds Sheet of 25x 40¢ stamps
PRIZE FOUR
Nothing; not a sausage.

While I’m not entering for obvious reasons, I might nonetheless consider adding one page myself to share just for the sake both of learning more about exhibits and for ‘funsies’.

I do like these a lot and would love to see more issues of this series.
If I had to sell some stamps of my small collection, these would be the last I'd sell.

Some cool stamps there, BrewDog and tacomabob. Looking forward to seeing BigSaint's and anilkhemlani's pages soon, and many others!

tacomabob – well, I hadn't thought of that. Yes, I guess so. Feel free to provide more than one entry.

Just to provide some more examples, here's a few winners from The American Topical Association (ATA) that were submitted there during previous years...

And one that was once resident in Australia Post's National Philatelic Collection. Not sure what it sold for though. I believe that it was auctioned off at some stage and I seem to recall seeing it appear on Philas' facebook page last year or the year before.

Nice idea, Catweazle.

Here's an example I pulled together from my FSF write-up to focus on the variety of perforations used on NZ First Side Faces over a fairly brief period between 1874 and 1878.

Thanks for sharing, manrico. Some colourful stamps there with a story behind them. By the way, are there many dealers or stamp exhibits in the Canary Islands?

RedKiwi, your page just goes to show that not every stamp is what we think it is! Such detail when you look closely. I wonder how many people have glanced over similar examples without realising it?

For the rest of you all out there: TWENTY ONE DAYS TO GO UNTIL THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE, FOLKS!

Indeed. I learnt early in my collecting that people often miss the small, but nevertheless important, details. One day I'll do a thread with the numerous examples I have picked up (usually on eBay) where rarities have been overlooked.

There are more discoveries out there...

Teus, remarkable! I had never thought of that but yes, not everyone uses numbers like we English speakers do and even then there are differences between numbers, Roman numerals etc

I suspect member RogerE might find this equally fascinating and perhaps of worthy inspiration for his Stamps Motivate Us to Engage with Languages thread?

Anyway, here's a submission to support your celebration - and hopefully share a little knowledge along the way.

Oh yes, that made me laugh, King Tut. Now that is surely a winning exhibit that you could, er, exhibit one day. Get together fifteen more pages and make it up into a full frame. It would at least bring a giggle to the judges and just goes to show that philately is never boring. Well those ones are, but you know what I mean. Love it!

Yes you had better! Just two weeks to go now, folks!

Very informative, OldDuffer1. What's the difference between the Bishop mark and a datemark? I presume the former is so called because they were largely sent by bishops in the really early days?

"The first type of British postmark was introduced in 1661, at the London Chief Office, when Henry Bishop was Postmaster General(June 1660 to April 1663.)
When refuting charges of delays in the post, he claimed:-

"A stamp is invented, that is putt upon every letter shewing the day of the moneth that every letter comes to this office, so that no letter Carryer may dare to detayne a letter from post to post ; which, before, was usual."

Bishop published the announcement of the "Bishop Mark" in the Mercurius Publicus. The Bishop Marks varied in size and in lettering, and they remained in general use until 1787 with survivals into 1788."
https://www.earsathome.com/webgil/bishop.html

The difference is that they didn't show the year. (Nothing to do with Bishops! :) )

Problem: I have a sharp pdf scan of that Electric Light Inspection page, but Stampboards doesn't allow that scan to be dropped into a post.
When I take a screenshot of it, that version is accepted by Stampboards, but it has lost the sharp detail present in the pdf version.
Is there an easy solution that will allow me to post the sharp (600dpi) pdf version?

Only one more day to get your entries in!

Here's another example (read: draft) I knocked up this evening for my practice and for your amusement...
R.L. Stevenson & Liliuokalani on Fr. Damien of Molokai (Draft Exhibit Page)
R.L. Stevenson & Liliuokalani on Fr. Damien of Molokai (Draft Exhibit Page)
Hopefully one day I can feature a similar page in an exhibit about Fr. Damien of Molokai... but in the meantime note that unfortunately I do not own that Queen Liliuokalani block of four stamps - it realised for USD$6190 including buyer's fees in The Gary Munson Collection auctioned by Rumsey back in 2022! Perhaps I can find a slightly cheaper block to put there instead... Anyway, I own that block of R.L. Stevenson but copied that image from the net and was lazy enough to insert a previously snapped photo of the Rev. Hyde cover. It'd need a new scan, for one thing.

However, any wisdom, tips or suggestions for improvement here, folks? No, I know it won't win a virtual stamp exhibit. Remember this is only a draft I'm, er, drafting for now and seek your thoughts.

Hello Ben = Catweazle, and fellow entrants in Ben's celebratory give-away.

I've already entered a one page display of Canadian Electric Light revenues. It has been my intention to show another one page display of Canadian revenues, but I've been defeated by the clock :o So, here is a draft nonentry of the planned page. I hope this glimpse at the amazing fractional revaluations on already incredible fractional face values gives viewers some viewing pleasure.

The draft page is incomplete in two respects: (a) the images I show on the draft are stamps I have purchased, but they are still in the mail on their way to me; (b) the spaces I've allocated on the draft correspond to stamps (including multiples) already in my collection, but I've run out of time to print the page, mount those stamps, and then scan it in sufficient detail to justify entering in this thread in time for the closing (presumably at midnight tonight!)

As an "earnest" of my good intentions, I will post an image of the completed page in due course, though that will be well after Ben's competition has closed. Sorry for missing the deadline, Ben :(
