Share Your G.Britain Used In Ireland Stamp and Cover Images

Post by Flying Tiger »

I have looked over the board and I have not seen a thread dealing with the the stamps of Great Britain used in Ireland. I have recently started collecting this area and I have not found many examples.

In fact, all of the examples in my meagre collection have been discovered by accident. Even recent British stamps used in Northern Ireland are near impossible to find here.

To get the ball rolling, here are two examples from my collection
Image
Unidentified KEVII stamp (I never could figure out the printings) with POYTNZPASS, ARMAGH cancel

Image
Great Britain S.G. 80 stamp with "445" diamond cancel. I think it is Waterford.

'Collect British Postmarks' by Whitney has a concordance of the numbers and the towns they represent for Ireland (as well as Scotland, England and Wales).

I don't collect Britain, but this book is invaluable for writing up lots. A single sale can easily pay the cost of the book. It's simply packed with information.

That is a valuable resource. Unfortunately, my copy disappeared some time ago! I did however, manage to compose an Excel spreadsheet showing what I believe to be correct numeral cancels for Ireland.

Kingstown 1d.red star pl 49 sg 40/41

Kingstown,Dublin,Ireland

Image

"continental french" style trial double ring cancellation with diamond numeral (289)
This cancellation only used here and Enniskillen (214) mentioned in Wright and Creek "Postmarks of the British Isles 1840 - 1876" with illustrations pages 112/113

Bought for a couple of pounds off ebay recently, stamp is relatively common but post mark is certainly not, as a GB used in ireland collector i consider this to be a real "find" and is the only one i have seen anywhere for years.

The bottom right stamp is cancelled in Moville, Ireland. I'm sure I have a few Victorian covers from Ireland....I'll have a search.

Your right scotsmanabroad Moville is at the northenmost tip of Ireland on the Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal and is a very picturesque town
In the second half of the 19th century, Moville was a significant point of embarkation for many travellers, especially emigrants, to Canada and the United States of America. Steamships of the Anchor Line, of Glasgow, and others en-route from Glasgow to New York City regularly called at Moville to pick up additional passengers, again most were emmigrants
You will notice the Moville 1/- green is cancelled with a cds dated in 1872 as are a lot of stamps shown on the "gb used in ireland" forum, the vast majority of these stamps with this type of cds are not postally used stamps, but i believe, are postage stamps of that era used on telegraphic forms with telegraphic cancellations and soaked off of telegraphic forms and sold (illegaly) to the public as "postage stamps"
This is probably a direct result of stamp dealer Charles Nissen who in the late 19th century was buying (illegally) telegraph forms from an Essex paper mill where they had been sent to be destroyed as the law required, a sort of victorian "data protection act", and removed the stamps presumably selling them through his stamp dealing business, with no mention as far as i am aware where they came from and what they were used for, and discovered "the Stock Exchange Forgery" of a 1/- green on 1872 telegraph forms from previous (illegal) purchases, eventually he reported this find to the GPO, but how many stamps of all values then in use had he removed from the telegraph forms and sold on?
He did i believe get the GPO permission to search literally 1000`s of forms used in 1872 (and earlier and later) in search of this forgery and maybe others of other values which involved removing stamps to check for watermarks this is how he found the forged 1/- green which had no watermark, but no other values were found, only 1/- green plates 5 and 6, and this begs the question what happended to all the other stamps of all values that somehow found their way into the public domain? well i will tell you they are in collections and dealers stock and auction lots they are everywhere in fact and how do you tell them from postally used examples, suspect any stamp that was in use in 1872 with various dates in 1872 it apears as singles, pairs and blocks, occasionally dated 1871 or 1873 but 99% 1872 with the tell tale full or nearly so cds with no sign of the other half of the postally used duplex cancellations, on pairs and blocks each stamp cancelled with the full cds no sign of any type of barred cancellation, that goes for the whole of GB Scotland,England,Ireland and Wales.
I will post more on this later so thats all for now, i know there was another big find of telegraph forms in 1909/10 and stamps again found there way to the public of a later date than 1872 including all the high value victorian stamps £5 £1 10/- 5/- and so on...chavander

Great info, Chavander. There is a small mention about this in the new 2010 GB Concise. So, the bottom 3 stamps are all telegraphically used....I like a story to go with my stamps, cheers :D

It's taken me eight years to form a collection of just twelve GB newspaper wrappers used in Ireland. They are much more difficult to find than stamps. Two examples are shown here

A very modest contribution. I will look up the cancellations in the Whitney next weekend to see if I can dig some up in my collection. n the meantime, from a very geographically challenged philatelist: note these are all either Dublin or Belfast...

Jay... nice pair actually the DONABATE cancel on the three halfpence brown which is about 20 miles north of Dublin is relatively scarce and not easy to find.

and joelk nothing wrong with collecting Dublin and Belfast cancels a good collection can be made up just using the 1d. lilacs or better still collecting Dublin cancels on the low value Jubilee issues, still plenty to be found, fairly cheaply.

Three times I have tried to comment and three times I have lost power due to a thunderstorm!!

Chavender, that is interesting information regarding the DONABATE cancel. I picked up that item yesterday for less than $1. Most dealers here do not charge a premium for cancellations. I have only been collecting Britain used in Ireland for maybe 8 months and I have found this area to be both challenging and fun. Also, the fact that Mrs. Flying Tiger is Irish helps in identifying Irish Towns

Joel, as Chavender mentioned, a nice collection of Dublin & Belfast cancels can be acquired. Your collection is looking quite nice.

Flying Tiger, I'd like to believe that's not the case, but who knows what happens in a 140 years history, since this stamp was printed? There are no traces of repairs when dipped in watermark fluid, but again, who knows?

Hi!

I sorted those out, which I thought could be irish postmarks. Am I right with these? I could also show detailed scans of single stamps. There is also a postally used fiscal stamp if I`m right.
