Australian stamp cancels and postmarks that have you beaten!

Post by manfaefife »

Admin note - for detailed Australian STATES ERA cancels please refer to this other thread -

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=15930

And a COMPLETE list of every Australia and State Post office listed alphabetically is here -

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=38094

A tip of how to find names even if you have only PARTIAL letters of that name is here -

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=73949&start=5

============

After "speaking" with Glen regarding numerous individual requests for help with Aussie cancels, I thought it might be an idea to post such requests on a single thread. This way we'd just have this one thread similar to the KGV head and Roo query threads.

Can we try it see how it works ? I'll start off with this one, it's obviously a Railway Station one though it doesn't leave much room for place or state in the CDS.

To narrow it down maybe there's a Perfin on the stamp B.G.E.C., anyone any thoughts on cancel or Idea ?

Can I throw another one at you all. This 6d Roo has a cancel that looks like * Creek ok so there are numerous postmarks with the name Creek, but what is the word on the line under where the date is ? Looks like large letters an REIL or similar.

Thanks Brian, shame that doesn't narrow it down any, unless the word Sydney is missing from the bottom, rather than having the state name. Yep looked online as I should have done at the start. Here's the cancel on a nice cover. The cover was in a Spink auction and for curiosity sold for $850

Is this blue postmark likely to be revenue usage ? It looks like it might be Roseville NSW, but then again who knows !

here it is darkened so you can see it slightly better

The 1/- perfin - of course you can't be absolutely certain, but I would wager it was Sydney Railway Station. In my limited experience this is the only one that I've come across with only "Railway Station" up top and the name below and would have had an office open at this time (there are plenty of other usages with the place name at the bottom such as Ship Mail Room, Air Mail, Parcel Post, Registered etc). For other railway stations they put the office name at the top and abbreviated if they ran out of room - Rwy Stn, Railway, or simply R.S.

Agree with Peter that it says RAILWAY STATION at top.

Re the Blue and violet cancels (sometimes oval) there were some POSTAL cancels of that era .. so feel sure that is what you have.

Might also be HURSTVILLE?

Probably stomped the wrong inkpad with the CDS.

I'd go with E before the T by the look of the CDS.
There are stacks of *EVILLE locations, eg Erskineville etc.

But what else would be running across the top, a lot of space is left?

I know it's only a small pic but here's what I think is the same or similar blue cancel from NSW, its a stamp among a mixed lot selling on ebay, hence the tiny photo, and it looks like it is Office.

Hi All,

I was just sorting through some kgv heads looking for flaws and came across this one. Nothing pretty but the postmark has me stumped.

Searching online I can't find any NSW towns ending in ALLAL.

The 6d Roo.

Next to impossible, but my best attempt would be Valencia Creek (Victoria 1900-74). Agree the last word appears to be Creek. "encia" seems to fit with the shapes of the five observable letters of the previous word. Valencia is the only "encia". And the word is probably fairly long, as the final word Creek ends quite a long way around the circle.

The word below the date - not sure it is actually part of this CDS. Unless my eyes deceive me the ink is ever so slightly greyer than the CDS ink. My speculation is it could be part of a separate Parcel line cancel done somewhere else. With a 6d stamp it would be something bigger than a letter, which I think would rule out a machine cancel (even if they had them this early).

Any other thoughts ?

Peter

Here's one that looks clearly Mitta Junction, Vic but my question is, is there a word missing or have they Just utilised the old Canceller ? PPA shows a Mitta Junction Reservoir in use from 1921 until renamed in 1922 as Mitta Junction PO. Mitta Junction was used until it closed in 1936. I've shown the stamp in its normal state followed by a darkened version.

I should have added that the 'Reservoir' was excised off the original canceller. This wasn't unusual - it happened frequently with 'T.O.', 'R.O.', 'R.S.' (or 'RLWY STN'), and later with the original 'postcodes' for the major cities (i.e. N.1., E.3., S.E.2., W.8., etc.). There are several other instances of entire words being excised from the original canceller after name-changes; not common and well worth hanging on to.

I tell you I've been there recently. There is a building there with Australia Post logo attached. A post box out the front. A person works there that the locals call Postmistress.

Perhaps not a full post office, but at least some sort of agency.

Hi,

Below is a part of the PPA website and the 1993 date mentioned is the date it became a Licenced Post Office(LPO), not the date it closed and it is still an LPO listed under Australia Post in the white pages directory

PO 9/8/1921; LPO 9/11/1993.

After lightening and darkening this postmark I think I have it down to (0) Office Geelong, but what word is in front of the office ? Is it simply Post, or Telegraph or some other word, and if it is Post Office Geelong, why ? Most other postmarks Just have the name of the town and state, don't they ?

Until the experts respond ...

Larger post offices had more than one cancel, and some of these were in specialised areas of the post office.

Things like: Parcels Office, Ship Mail Office, Money Order Office.

Apparently Geelong had as many as 15 cancellers.

I would guess PARCELS OFFICE GEELONG, but it could have been a different kind of office.

Hi Donald

I would say "Telegraph Office Geelong".

I don't know how to post pictures here yet but if you go to Torsten Weller's web site there is an example on a 1939 cover in the "Canada Postal History" section. If you look at that example the style of characters in the date line are similar to yours, the dimensions of the mark are similar to yours (including the length of the lines separating the name of the office from the state, and the "I" in office is the letter closest to perpendicular from the date line (as in yours). Measuring the width of the overall CDS would be useful too but is a bit hard from scans that aren't actual size.

Geelong did have a money order office mark but I can't find an example from the same time as yours - by the 1950s it was using a rectangular mark. I can't recall a parcels office CDS for Geelong

... and I did write "Until the experts respond ..."

Many thanks Muruk and Peter, I know when you collect postmarks you're supposed to have complete strikes, but I'm keeping ones like this till a more complete one comes along, but the good thing is I'm learning :D Only thing is I now have to have books on postmarks added to my KGV head checklist books on my wish list, ah the fun of collecting Australia.

Donald

For my own collection, I always keep partial strikes for the uncommon marks. Often you may never see a complete strike of some of the rarest.

Obviously if you are collecting with the aim of exhibiting at shows or for the value, the more complete the better.

The experts have a rating system for postmarks covering completeness and clarity. Completeness is A-D (A being a complete strike, D being small partial) and 1-4 for clarity (1 being very clear, 4 being only just recognisable). There are other factors affecting postmark value but these start to get very specialised, as with any area of stamp collecting.

Cheers

Broken Hill Pty Town Cancel?

Post by davpot »

Hi all:
This forum has always expanded my knowledge and folks here know a ton more than I do. So here it is: CofA 5d KGV with "Broken Hill Pty(?) Town/NSW" cancel. Now Ive never seen (what I believed to be) Pty inserted into a town cancel before. Am I right? If so, did this usage last long? Of value? Thought you might like the neat SON cancel too. Many thanks all!

Sorry - got it the wrong way round - A-D is for clarity and 1-4 is for completeness.

Yep as David says it's Broken Hill Railway Town, according to PPA site "Renamed from Broken Hill R.S. PO 1/3/1905; closed 30/1/1987."

PPA site for cancels is https://www.premierpostal.com/cgi-bin/wsProd.sh/po.w?

Managed to find a Broken Hill RLY Town cancel in my own collection

Here's another one guys that has me stumped. My first look was for "Late Fee Rly St." with NSW at bottom, but there's a lot more letters. Any ideas ?
