David,

The image below is from the Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser, 22 September 1905.

Maybe once the railway reached South Casino there might have been a train going to Lismore to connect with the Sydney bound service?

Working my way through some more early material and these 4 OS stamps were all together.

The one shown separately appears to show "SPECIAL SYDNEY". Can anyone help with what it is about please.

I didn't realise this stamp is badly creased, but I'm still intrigued with the spelling: Shellharbor without the 'u'. (?)

Mobbor,

The second and third datestamps were inscribed Shellharbor.

Hopson & Tobin state "Spelling confirmed as Shellharbour on 8.3.1930".

They record the second datestamp used from 1900-1914 and the third from 1924-1958.

Next time you are in such a quandary, search using quotes like this: "Shellharbor".

It prevents search engines giving you what they "think" you are interested in, to the excusion of what you really want.

My information was on the first page of found results.

T.P.O. No 5. S&W is a travelling post office cancel used on the western railway line of which both Hodgson and Toowoomba were on. Your example is type 5 down on the above list. Rated C for common.
The postcard subject is uninspiring so value very small.

Postmark Query - WYATA.jpg
Going thru an estate auction lot - initially thought this was somewhere in Tasmania because the state ends in "IA".

No luck. Then, maybe Victoria?? The place name appears to have only five letters going by the overall spacing.

Any Ideas, please??

More about Kiata, Victoria.

Kiata has a well-maintained Bushland Reserve, and there are a number of other such reserves in the area.

Some of the many beautiful tree species found here include the yellow gum, black box, and slender cypress pine among many others. There are also certain pockets within the park that are home to an incredible, colourful orchid selection.
Around 90 hectares of the reserve serves as a butterfly sanctuary, so if you’re lucky you may be able to get a glimpse of these vibrant winged creatures fluttering about.

In the 1950s I visited the Kiata Lowan Sanctuary (now renamed as the Little Desert National Park) with my parents, who were keen nature lovers and conservationists. The Sanctuary was an initiative of Keith Hately, intended for the protection and conservation of the Lowan = Mallee Fowl.
Screenshot 2023-11-02 at 1.31.30 am.png
Getting there
Located at the Little Desert National Park approximately 375km
north-west of Melbourne, this 30-minute nature walk is situated 10
km south of Kiata. The road is accessible by 2WD.
The easy walk begins at the Kiata Sanctuary Picnic Ground.
Things to see and do
Kiata Lowan Sanctuary was the original name given to this area prior
to the establishment of the Little Desert National Park. Keith Hateley
was a local resident and major campaigner for the conservation of
the Little Desert for the protection of the Malleefowl or Lowan.
Lowan is the Wergaia word for Mallee hen.

https://www.parks.vic.gov.au/-/media/project/pv/main/parks/d ... -sheet.pdf

Reading between the lines, it seems that the Lowan/Mallee Hen has now almost disappeared from the area, despite early conservation efforts of people like Keith Hately.

635 mile t.a.r.
IMG_20231103_0001.jpg
Not able to find in Phoenix. It appears in my reverse listing of W.A. postmarks, but as six thirty four mile t.a.r.

Thanks to Satsuma's excellent advice, "635 mile tar" on Google shows a couple that sold at auction for over $300- admittedly better copies than this- and t.a.r. stands for Trans Australian Railway.

Any other info. I should be aware of?

Hi Everyone

Just come across a few pages of Melbourne postmarks and the last stamp I found was this one, a very unusual heptagonal cancellation shape, the name I cannot make out but appears to start UP and end in AIN - UP Train???
And in the centre where the time stamp normally goes it has M.G.8 or possible MiG.8

Any ideas? Is it a Railway Cancel of some sort?

The key to asking questions about your images is to "let the dog see the rabbit". So crop the image, in order we see your stamp & a minimum of the grey background, as below:
Up Train 2.jpg
I am sure you will have someone on hand to help you with this
Up Train M G 8 - A round version with a more complete image from Phoenix.

Hint - Up Train or Down Train, look for T P O ( Travelling Post Office)

Hi

Thanks for the tips and the information. Not scarce then. First one I have ever seen.

Back to school for cropping, will ask my 12 year old granddaughter to help :D

As for Up or Down - Up to where or Down to where?

Just another question about Victoria State cancels, do the numbers for barred cancels correspond to the same post office as for Duplex cancels?

Cheers

I am no expert on TPOs. Go to the link below & you should find the answers you seek:

'TPO' Cancels scans and discussion (Travelling Post Offices)

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=3799

For Victoria "Up Train" went away from Melbourne & "Down Train" went to Melbourne. in your case "M G 8", it was used on the North Gippsland Train Line".

Also have a look also at:

Info sought "Up Train" and "Down Train" Victoria Postmarks

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=8743

You should also type Travelling Post offices in the Google search bar at the bottom of the page. It will take you lots of other page links.

:D

PS I am not sure about your question on barred numerals but I think the answer is yes.

You can search barred numerals the same way here & you can go to the Phoenix website:

https://www.phoenixauctions.com.au/cgi-bin/wsPhoenix.sh/checkID.w?security=1

Then go to top left corner:

Reference Tools
Post Office Reference
Australian Numeral Cancels

That should keep you busy. :D

I have been working through a large number 1960 postmarks with the Centenary of the Melbourne Cup 5d stamp:
Bokallo or Borallo NSW
Bokallo or Borallo NSW
Does anyone have any ideas for this one which looks to me to be Bokallo or Borallo?

When I do a Google search, Mr Google takes me to Bodalla, NSW & I just don't see the third letter as a "D".

Nothing seems to fit in Phoenix either. Any ideas anyone please?

Hello,

can anyone perhaps help me with this postmark? It is a violet double circle postmark dated 19 FE 1930. In the upper part there is POST ...., I think it should be POST OFFICE, and the Town name is in the lower part, it is a name beginning with CENTRAL....!? Can anyone help me with this example? Which state used this kind of postmark? My guess was NSW or Tasmania!? Any help would be great!

Although this is an American-style postmark with vertical date, a number of these were used in NSW in the 1940s at least. See for instance:
SmartSelect_20231011_224630_Samsung Internet.jpg
Image from Phoenix Auctions

When I checked Phoenix's NSW post office list I found two possibilities:

Central Concord - opened 1921, renamed 1937.
Central Square - opened 1913, renamed 1933.

Of these I suspect josto's example is more likely Central Square (which was renamed to Chief Parcel Office, Sydney). However without a better strike of the postmark it is impossible to tell what the full lower text was.

More likely Central Concord as no known datestamps from Central Square.

I have seen these type postmarks from at least three different states.

I think you are right. I thought I could just make out 'Concord' in the lower, blurry text, but wasn't certain about that.

I have some images of this style of postmark, but not of Central Concord or any other 'Central' place name.

can anyone perhaps help me with this postmark? It is a violet double circle postmark dated 19 FE 1930. In the upper part there is POST ...., I think it should be POST OFFICE, and the Town name is in the lower part, it is a name beginning with CENTRAL....!? Can anyone help me with this example? Which state used this kind of postmark? My guess was NSW or Tasmania!? Any help would be great!

Thanks a lot

Although this is an American-style postmark with vertical date, a number of these were used in NSW in the 1940s at least. See for instance:

When I checked Phoenix's NSW post office list I found two possibilities:

Central Concord - opened 1921, renamed 1937.
Central Square - opened 1913, renamed 1933.

Of these I suspect josto's example is more likely Central Square (which was renamed to Chief Parcel Office, Sydney). However without a better strike of the postmark it is impossible to tell what the full lower text was.

Good spot. Now you mention it, I showed one similar on this thread a few years back:

Phoenix auctioned this one in auction #2170

These types are absent from Hopson & Tobin, so I assume they're rubber stamps and that they're an office stamp that has been used out of course?
