Hi

Many thanks for that.

What does the TO stand for? And is 08/07/45 the date it closed?

Cheers

RO is Receiving Office. TO is Telephone Office. PO is Post Office.

Tonghi Creek opened as a RO and TO in 1917 was upgraded to a PO in 1927 then downgraded to a TO in 1945 and closed in 1977.

Your example with the TO still on the cancel is very rare.

Hi all,
Picked up this example of Castlemaine P.O. an oval date stamp September 25, 1863. Not sure how long it was in use for. Phoenix doesn’t have any similar examples listed. Any information much appreciated. Regards, Summo.

Found this postmark and checked out the New South Wales TPO reference in the Wiki and it appears this may have only been used for Route 2. Is this correct? Because the number is missing on the postmark unfortunately.

Travelling PO West No. 2 is known used from August 1897 to November 1902.

This was used for the second section of the route, right across God's country from Wallerawang to Orange.

I wasn't expecting to see this in my travels.

Six examples of the previously unrecorded (according to Hopson & Tobin) Parramatta Junction datestamp.

This is a link to one of them:

https://www.delcampe.net/en_GB/collectables/stamps/australia ... 77767.html

All are poor strikes, as are the 919 numerals. All six postcards have a horizontal crease.

The Post Office was later renamed Granville.

I think this postmark might be Parap, Northern Territory but the only example I can find is a later one with longer arcs. I looked it up in Phoenix and Parap seems like the only answer.

Interesting.

Seems slightly unbalanced at the lower right end of 'PARAP'- as if a letter was missing. Unusual since most engraved date-stamps are usually symmetrical 'cept for those that are modified post release.

I don't think there is room for the removal of 4 letters or a poor strike - Paraparap & it is too early for Parapi Qld.

From Phoenix:

nt Paraparap PO 4/7/1918; renamed Parap PO 12/10/1918.
nt Parap (1) Renamed from Paraparap PO 12/10/1918; closed 8/10/1921.

nt Parap (2) PO 23/4/1925; closed 20/7/1925.
nt Parap (3) PO 2/1/1960; renamed Darwin North PO 2/9/1974.
nt Parap (4) Replaced Darwin North PO c.1995.
nt Parap Military P.O. PO 1/5/1946; closed 12/12/1946.
vic Paraparap RO 16/11/1910; PO 1/7/1927; closed 19/2/1955.

There is a PARAPI Qld but not listed in Dell and Cowan and your example is dated 4 years earlier than the RO of Phoenix's listing.

It could be Parap, here is the images from the SA/NT Handheld Postmarks book. I would guess by the rating that good images are hard to come by. The only issue is that there appears to be 1 dot on either side of the name.

Thanks for that listing.

The second illustration appears most similar including the unbalanced lettering. Those dots could easily disappear in a poorly inked/struck strike.

eharper's date is earlier.

The "Y" also faintly appears just north east of the 1 of 21.

You just beat me to it. But that would be "RY" as Territory is spelt in full. :)

Here's something you don't see everyday, a postmark with a date well before what Phoenix shows for it. Wayville Showgrounds, South Australia dated somewhere in the 1970s. PPA shows two listings for it, but one has no information so I imagine that's the one I found. No idea how rare this is.

Yours is Wayville Showground & the other is Wayville Showgrounds.

Your date is 4th September 1972.

Munich Olympics stamp issue date was 28th August 1972, so that fits in well. :D

Pretty sure that this is an Arthur Bergen cover & 5th September 1949 according to Phoenix is second day of use, but Arthur's cachet says it is first day it was used. So it would appear it was not used on 4th because the Showgrounds were not open. :)

The SA/NT handbook for that cancel has a range of use of 5-9-1973 to 3-9-1980. Rated C (=common), but by the look of it an ERD.

There are in total 3 postmarks for Wayville Showground, and are easy to identify the first one has South Aust (8-9-1949 to 4-9-1963 LDL, 6-9-1965 to 7-9-1970 SDL), the second has SA Aust (?-9-1971 to 3-9-1990), the third which you have S-Aust 5034 (SDL 5-9-1973 to 3-9-1980)

Hello sharper. It's always good practice to add a link or reference for items found online. It gives acknowledgement to other people's work/property, and provides a way for others to follow up if needed.

eharper,

Hopson and Tobin do not describe this date-stamp (not having seen a strike). The listing, shown below, only speculates on the Tobin type and dates of usage.

An excerpt from Tobin's NSW postmark monograph (page 96) shows the various types. Obviously yours does not have the smaller nylon date-wheels introduced in the late 50s I believe.

I was hoping for a copy of the postmark to use more as an elimination item then anything else. I actually think it might be Penshurst Depot, but Phoenix doesn't have a post office by that name.

Yes, your assumption is correct.

H&T list a "Panina Postal Depot" and the illustration at the end of the chapter has the date-stamp with the location engraved as "PANINA DEPOT" notwithstanding the entry includes the word "Postal" ergo Peakhurst Postal Depot's date-stamp would have not included the reference to "Postal" since the letters would not have fit into the date-stamp.

So it's probably Peakhurst Depot, since I can't find any mention of a Penshurst Depot.

eharper,

Apologies. I have been diligently working on some serious New Guinea research for a potential article thus was not paying close attention to your query. I misread the name.

Penshurst Postal Depot was indeed listed as "PENSHURST DEPOT". Here's the H&T listing:
H & T Penrith Railway Station - Pericoe Penshurst Depot -01.001.jpg
It appears the time-wheels were only used 1945-6. Peakhurst apparently did not have time-wheels. Your initial observation is most likely correct. My error.
