Hello Noel,

I did see a Frankston Opening cover offered at: http://www.sutherlandphilatelics.com.au/lists/sc1_ap.pdf . The cover is listed as: 150578 18¢ Parliament House GP3 6530 PM 571 Opening New Post Office, Frankston.

Perhaps it is the cover that you are looking for.

Best wishes,

Thank you for taking the trouble to provide the lead.

Any cover with the heading GP, as is the case with the cover you mention above, is a General Purpose philatelic envelope of Australia Post.

If it was a souvenir cover of Australia Post it would have the initials SE which stands for Special Event.

The envelope I am looking for and illustrated at the top of this topic is an SE.

Thank you for keeping an eye out for me.

I will upload a specimen of a GP cover tomorrow.

Hello Noel,

I appreciate learning that. Going through Delcampe, eBay, and other sites has been an interesting lesson about souvenir covers.

Best wishes,

Noel

I did ask David Kirby about these, you will recall his shop was in an arcade just across the road from the Post Office.

We had a discussion about various post offices in Frankston. David said he recalled something about the cover but had never seen one.

I will continue the search.

Noel, DMS Bright was appointed to the inaugural Australian Postal Commission Board in 1974 by Bob Hawke.

He rose to Deputy Chair in 1978/79. He was a farmer who became an MD in chemical manufacturing so probably worked both sides of the political fence, given the appointment by Hawke.

There is a photo of him in the Commissions 1978/79 annual report. Looked to be about 50 to 55 then.

Thank you for the background information on the chief guest DMS Bright.
I can use this infomation on the album page when displaying this cover.

From Oz Pictormarks:

Oz Pictormarks - Opening of New Frankston Post Office - 15th May 1978 (APM#6530)

Colleen talks about an an illustrated souvenir cover & prices it at $35. Presumably this is the general purpose cover like the ones I showed above.

If Australia Post didn't advertise this cover for sale, then who received them? Would they have been given to invited guests to the opening? Does someone have a list of the invited guests?

Seems like it might have been a PO created cover to hand out to big shots at the opening?

Near 50 years on seems like few if any have survived, but I'll keep my eyes open for sure. :)

I think I am getting closer, but I am not quite there yet:

Right stamp with the right postmark but not the right cover. :)
