Also been wondering about Geelong member mcgooley. Haven't seen her pop up around here for ages either.

Folks:

Due to a family emergency my presence on this board will be limited in the near future.

I apologize in advance for any swaps I am leaving hanging.

David/Waffle: I just sent you an email. Please do NOT send me any more covers or stamps for the time being. I have about a half dozen from you already!

Again, I’m sorry for any inconvenience. I will catch up (eventually)…

Whew!

It’s been about six weeks since I’ve posted here. It’s been a blur.

A 95-year-old mother with a broken hip and dementia that’s getting progressively worse will do that to you, I guess.

And there’s no end in sight.

Thank you to all Stampboards members for their kind words in posts, emails etc.

I have more than two dozen covers and postcards to acknowledge that have arrived in recent weeks and plan to do so today in a series of posts before I disappear again temporarily.

Again, thanks to all at Stampboards for your support. This is truly a special place.

Apologies to those to whom I owe mail.

I've been on school camp (again)... had the cat at the vet with some serious injuries (where from remains a mystery)... and to top it off my grandmother passed away so have been back and forth interstate a few times this term.

It's all rather made me realise how precious and beautiful yet so short our fleeting moments in life are. So, I'll try to hurry up and mail your post before I get any much the older!

Hello folks:

It’s the long weekend here in North America and my 95-year-old mother died early Wednesday after 10 days in palliative care.

She was a special woman, but she was ready to go. I’m glad she is at peace. And I am recovering from several rather intense months.

It’s been a strange summer.

In addition to me dealing with my mother, we’ve had huge wildfires on the outskirts of Kelowna with tens of thousands evacuated across the lake in neighboring West Kelowna.

It got so bad they declared a state of emergency and sent home thousands of tourists (it’s a tourism economy here with our beautiful lakes and mountains) freeing up space in hotel rooms and campgrounds for evacuees and hundreds of firefighters. Air quality has been terrible, so going outside in the sweltering summer was horrible anyway.

Add to that a massive rockslide blocking the main highway through the Okanagan Valley that occurred a few days ago (!) so it’s been just bizarre here.

Little traffic. Empty restaurants and breweries (yay). And it’s finally cooling off with a few much needed showers.

Thank you to everyone who got in touch over the last few months and expressed support or concern.

It has been much appreciated.

But needless to say I am way behind responding to folks who have sent me Pay it Forwards or other freebies or trades (especially Waffle). Please bear with me while I get through the backlog!

I’ll be sitting at my desk doing a lot of paperwork in the coming days I’m sure.

Finally, allow me to share a stamp related story about my late mum and dad.

They bought me and my little brother to a stamp shop after Christmas, probably around 1970-1971 in Norwich, Norfolk, England.

They had previously given us each a single volume Stanley Gibbons bright red (Avon was the brand?) album for Christmas and then we went to the stamp store.

Stamps were kept behind glass in a case and carefully handled with Tweezers. It was an intimidating place for two little boys. We were allowed to select several sets each.

I still have some of the mint stamps we bought that day in my WW album. They’re not particularly
valuable, but they mean everything to me.

Stamps took me to pirate battles between ships in exotic realms and other wonderful places. And reminded me of great football games (I got the 1966 England World Cup set that day, too). Wonder if I will actually see England win a World Cup I remember? I was four in 1966!

Thanks mum and dad for great memories.

And there’s a stamp show to the north of me (the highway is open in that direction at least) this Saturday! Let the stamp season resume!

Sadly a botched knee replacement followed by emergency vascular surgery and an embolectomy has left me with months of painful recovery. I was both near death and full amputation of my right leg (my surgeon, who is quite a wag) said to me `lets look at the positives - you aren't dead and you still have your right leg`; not quite what I wanted to hear. I am left with dreadful nerve damage to my foot and a scar from my ankle to my groin where they did the bypass. Hey Ho. I shall continue to read but posting might be difficult in the short term. I shall be getting on with painful physiotherapy for my knee and treatment for the peripheral neuropathy in my foot. Having been given oxycontin in hospital I have not continued with it as i think it is too dangerous an opioid.......

Wow, that is horrible, but your surgeon is right!

What I would stress is that however painful it is, the physiotherapy must be done. Unless you are private, you won't get a visit every day, and you must do the exercises that the physio left you.

My mother has a low pain threshold and didn't do sufficient physio after a femur break/knee replacement. (Two separate ops because the first femur repair failed.) She was 94; she's now 96 coming up to 97. She hasn't walked since trying about 6 weeks after the second op, and now can't stand at all. Muscle wastage and arthritis. Of course she is now in a care home.

I don't know what age you are: you're probably much younger and fitter than she was, but I would urge you to do as much as you can to avoid that.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Well,

Forgot about this thread but I wasn’t on the boards until a few months ago for probably a good 4 years…..

Back in 2018 I was driving up the Jersey Turnpike (I-95) and some idiot going the wrong way hit me nearly head on. I was doing about 75 mph (with the flow of traffic) and I flipped several times and apparently bounced off several other cars. I was in a Lincoln Navigator which is a large, even by US standards, 4x4. Bigger than a Range Rover or full sized Land Cruiser and on the same basic platform as a Ford F-150 so it’s not like I was in something small like a Toyota Corolla. The massive size and heavy duty construction of this monster likely saved my life despite it being a catastrophic crash, the State Troopers assumed I would die either en route to or at the Hospital.

Clearly I proved them wrong.

I got banged up real good. Months in the hospital and much longer in rehab. Then got sick as hell with a myriad of crap during the lockdown. Numerous healed bones and whatnot later and after successful surgeries I can now see about 60-80% (depending on the eye) as well as I could before. This means I can read message boards and argue politics and talk about stamps. I can also drive again. Britjag will appreciate this as my beloved XJ Portfolio is back on the road with me behind the wheel!

I’ve also moved to Las Vegas, Nevada from New Jersey.

Remember kids, don’t drive drunk. The guy that hit me didn’t survive. He was absolutely plastered apparently. And many years back in 1995 my pregnant fiancée and my unborn daughter were killed by a drunk driver.

I love my bourbon but booze and cars just don’t mix.

Bill

Glad you're on the mend, I did wonder where you went on the board. Sounds like a horrific time that you've had, but come out the other side. Hope you're enjoying Vegas and Nevada, plenty of long roads out that way as long as you've got plenty of fuel and water! also sun most of the year and mountains in easy reach, love heading out there.

Take care and always good advice regarding drink driving, I've lost friends to it myself so know better.

Wishing Bill and Derbeboi a good recovery.

I was walking to my office (which is a km away) on 6.1.24 and suddenly felt breathless and jaw hurting. Just sat down on the footpath. After a few minutes, recovered enough to hail a rickshaw and go to the emergency at the hospital, also a km away.

Underwent an angiogram and angioplast procedure wherein four blocks were discovered and stents inserted. Was in hospital for five days and am now back home and moving about and taking walks. The tablets cause occasional aches and pains in the arms and back, otherwise, I am okay. Planing to join back to work on first march.

I was taking a tablet a day for BP and this really was out of the blue and scary. Used to get checkups about once a year. Anyway, health is important and we need to check up regularly.

Dear Girish,

I hope you get well soon. Take care!

Good to hear you are feeling better.

Try to walk an hour a day at a pace that you feel comfortable with.

Keep up those regular check ups. :D

Girish, very sorry to hear that but also very glad that it was caught and that you’re on the mend!

Thank you for the well wishes… I’m basically recovered, it was getting the surgeries on my eyes to restore proper sight that was the big problem. Now I can (ok, I need glasses) well enough to read, watch TV, look at my stamps, read bourbon labels, drive, etc.

Having broken a ton of bones the dry climate of Las Vegas is a LOT more comfortable, and yes it was awesome to see the Knights bring Lord Stanley to town!

And how did I miss driving! The scenery out here is pretty spectacular too.

Hi Girish,

That sounds scary and I’m very happy that you are better and got treatment.

Please get the back and arms pain investigated. It’s unlikely medication would cause that. It sounds more like some residual heart or blood circulation issues. Don’t hesitate to get more medical opinions and tests.

Best,
Joel.

Thank you all for your wishes. Good to know you are driving now Bill.

I had a follow up visit twice after the procedure. They did blood work and the medicines were changed/dosage reduced. Joelk the Doctor did look into the aches in the back and arms and went through the results of the tests. The aches and pains have now gone and I feel better. I too have started driving now since a few days.

Am going to work from 1.3.24.

Hi Girish,

Good news! I’m glad the aches have subsided and you got good follow ups from your doctor. All the best to you in resuming work. May you be healthy for a long time to come.

Best,
Joel.

Complete recoveries wished for all members having medical issues recently -- we truly live in an wonder age, we really do, for most things that would have taken even our parents!
