Here I am the proverbial " Damp squib".

The reason these would not be in Gibbons Railway stamps catalogue is, I am afraid, blindingly obvious!

Neither Little Bernera or Great Bernera Islands ( population 252 in 2011) have any need for special stamps, such as these pretty labels.

These "stamps" have never been nearer to Great Bernera than any one of the locomotives depicted.

They cannot even pretend to have a mail carrying legitimacy, as the island is connected by a bridge which allows normal Royal mail service daily.

It seems the labels were created by an entrepreneur based in the USA who probably never got nearer to the west coast of Scotland than a page in the Atlas.

They have less legitimacy even than the other controversial " leaders" issues !
whatever it is -------it's better than a poke in eye with a wet umbrella !

Hello Vikingeck,
thank you for post.

I thought that these stamps were used for the Tourists purpose.
An additional cost beside Royal Mail.
I thought that if tourists put a mail (postcard) in Mailbox (pillar) on the island/s
these stamps are there for to cover the costs for ferry to mainland.

So if I get it right.
These stamps were not even available as souvenir at local shop/s?
Nice looking, collectors items in the shape of Postal stamps.
With no philatelist value at all.

Anyway, I am glad to have these in my collection.

Very interesting and one of the finest wallpaper sets around. Okay the ethics and marketing was dodgy (St Grenadines and Tuvaluan Islands along with Scottosh Hebrides later), but the quality of the product was first rate.

What you got was experly drawn and emminently interesting thematical stamps and the dodgy marketing is a blessing now as these stamps can be picked up for a pittance in most places, which must make all the original purchasers who paid top dollar for them a bit mad, but this stands head and shoulders above all other speculation and wallpaper issues.

I mean if you were actively collecting wallpaper, would you buy these informative stamps or some souless generic nonsense about Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson or some US historical event of no relevance outside the USA. I know what I would choose.

Not quite sure what your point is, G.A.

I think you will find that there have been some fairly recent updates in the descriptions on:

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=46939

As far as this thread is concerned I had understood that GreenGO had finished showing us the collection!

Some of the wallpaper has been used, and not just on the wall! Here's a postcard I picked up at the fair on Saturday with a $1 locomotive from the second series, SG 723. Catalogued at only 25p it must be worth more, properly postally used like this.

Whyever not; it is cancelled by the St Lucia PO, and is in the catalogue main listing, unlike some. I don't think SG would list it if it were not valid for postage.

That stamp looks more attractive with the legal cancellation, it has done its JOB that it was mend for. 8)

I prefer legal used above, pre-canceled or mint.

The postcard price must curry the premium for such used stamps.

All appears used circa 1985.

Whatever the postal status, this depicts a fantastic piece of engineering. This must have been close to the absolute limits of steam technology.

Apparently a group is planning to produce a new T1, (all the old ones were scrapped), to try to break the steam speed record (126mph for the Mallard).

GreenGo, With your permission, I have 20-30 sets of railway themed stamps and sets, mostly from Africa. Although unrelated to your "Leaders of the World," theme, may I post them on your thread?, as I am having problems finding other railway themed threads.

If you know of other railway threads, please direct me there. Anyone else who can assist, help is always welcome.
I prefer to collect UK, British Commonwealth esp Pacific area ( not excluding West Indies/Canada ) and Western Europe. At the bottom of my zone of interest is Eastern Europe and communist countries.

Preservation Edit
Two members of the class survive to the present day;

The class leader, 520 (original streamlining style complete with front pilot cowling) is in the care of the South Australian division of the Australian Railway Historical Society (trading as SteamRanger Heritage Railway) and was returned to service for heritage train duties in 1971-1972. Repainted to it's original Hawthorne Green livery in 1978, it operated with SteamRanger on mainline tours and on the Victor Harbour Tourist Railway until placed in storage at the end of the 1998 running season.

It will require extensive and costly mechanical work (primarily associated with a reversion to coal firing and tender frame corrosion) before it is fit for service again. As of August 2017, privately funded work has been begun to reconstruct the locomotive's life-expired tender, but significant fundraising efforts will be required to facilitate the remainder of the work necessary for a return to operational status.

523 survives in static preservation at the National Rail Museum in Port Adelaide, South Australia.Withdrawn following a major mechanical failure on an enthusiasts tour in 1968, the locomotive spent many years in the open air at the Museum's original Mile End site, before being transferred to the current Museum complex at Port Adelaide in 1988.

It is displayed in it's 1950's-60's guise with lined black livery and minus it's front pilot cowling. Due to display changes at the museum in recent years, the locomotive is currently sited in the historic Port Adelaide Goods Shed (part of the Museum precinct), rather than in the climate-controlled main pavilion, the only one of the museum's preserved 'big power' locomotives so relegated.
