Share your beautiful old banknotes (Prefer pre 1970s)

Post by Princestamps »

Does anyone have images of old banknotes they own, I mean real classics not the usual Post USSR 1 ruble wallpaper stan stuff or Central American inflation issues.

I love the design of old and obselete notes like these two from my own country. These are the 10/- and One Pound used between 1940 and 1967

You can see they are very intricately designed, even though they are the two lowest values in the series. The backs would show a scee of the Treaty of Waitangi (1940) on the 10 bob and a scene of the Endeavour off the coast on the One Pound.

I love the usage of Maori carving in the design and just how elaborate these old notes are.

I will post more from time to time. But if you have a lovely old note or notes you want to show, share it with us!!! :D

Very true...almost every time I see a banknote 'collection' offered in an estate auction, it will have a positive-sounding description..."blue album with assortment of old to modern worldwide notes"...then the (usually not very detailed) image will show a few dozen notes on a table, with the usual hum-drum Brazil/Argentina things that were probably useless before they left the press; some Yugoslavia 'amazingly-high face-values', late-Tsarist Russia notes that even after near 100 years are only worth $2 and are usually seen in poor condition...

I'll dig around at home and see what I have...I like collecting notes to accompany my country collections of stamps, the old-time engraving is amazing. :D

I know what you mean, all those Brazilian notes of the 1980s showing the guys with the big moustaches and the Peruvian one with the Inca on it. And of course not forgetting the billions of those stan notes from 1991 -1993 that were in Kapeks and Rublys, Rubalim, Drams, Somoni and the mega budget ones of Trans dinestria which is not even a real country.

This is also nice but spoiled by the red pen.
Where do the years go? I went from philandering to philately and didn't even notice.

After World War II Military Payment Certificates (MPC) were issued as a form of currency
to pay military personnel during the occupation of Germany. It was a form of currency
control during the reconstruction period. MPCs were first issued in Germanyy in 1946 and
the use was discontinued in 1958 when they were devalued. The script could be exchanged
at a military base for Deutsch Marks (or other country currency) at the current exchange rate
for use on the local economy. Today the MPC has no monetary value other than to collectors.
A $10.00 MPC in fine condition may be worth up to $1500.00.
