I have had an amazing windfall of over 70 new dates, including my last missing one in 1915 and Xmas Day 1917. Still a long way to go post 1918. So here's an update:
Image
I have had to add 22 August 1918- didn't realise it was damaged. It shouldn't be too hard being it's a Thursday, but none of the others will be easy.

I see I missed Glen's comment about Xmas day. I spoke to Richard Breckon about that a couple of years ago. He said that it was probably only the second post box collection that was processed. However, since then I've acquired an Xmas day 1914, which is a T.P.O! I've also got one, unfortunately no year, timed at 11.30p.m. I hope the poor bugger was on penalty rates.

Mobbor: I got told many years ago by a fellow postmark collector that quite a few general stores in small country towns post offices open for half a day on Christmas day.

He personally experienced one such occasion in the 1970s. Especially applied if it was also the telephone exchange.

Looking forward to seeing some of your new postmarks on the every day/happy day page.

Well, just an opinion, but I think the markings are inconsistent with a 0, 1 or 3 .... but possibly not a 2 .....

Hi VicciSuperbUsed. Agree! Took me ages to find the post you got that from. It is not a great example, but beggars can't be choosers in July 1914. Actually I placed it in the slot for 19/7. It is not unusual for half the 1 to be missing. Agree it's not 2, and extremely unlikely to be 3. (I'm not even going to think about the fact that it could just be an 0, or just how many other date slug errors there may be. My earliest date is from January, before the plates were even manufactured in England.)

Going back through this thread reminded how many Stampboarders have made contributions, so thank you all. Many of them were gratis, but none of the remainder are easy, so I expect to pay.

Now come on Vicci- what can you offer?

Apologies Mobbor, as the saying goes "if you are going to make an error, best make it a big one"..... sorry for the history trek - I was reading the whole post backwards (as you do), and must have hit "page 1" rather than "previous".

(It happens, especially late at night, but where I don't comment, my inadequacies go largely un-noticed!).

I also meant to say I thought the markings were "not inconsistent with it being a 2", as in "I think it can only be a 2" (barring slug errors).

However, its so old and you've probably replaced all possible options with clear strikes, so its probably all hypothetical by now.

I don't collect Australia, so can't offer anything directly, but they do trickle through in schoolboy collections (en route to bulk off paper world mix), so I will keep an eye out for any of the dates you are still looking for.

Happy hunting.

(Really wasn't a great post - also apols to Moderators for using "that pic" to comment on a previous post. Thanks for fixing it).

A large 1d Red dated collection sold at Status just the other day and an even larger one is going at this weekends Abacus auction.

Status sold at about $1 a stamp. 1,480 stamps.

Abacus is selling a dated 1d Red/Green/Violet collection ("1000s") for an estimate of $1,000

And if I had the money, then Lot 46 would be mine! 1,080 plated Penny covers along with the plating books.

Thanks Allanswood.

I got the impression that the Status auction lot was not all that complete, and without knowing the dates...…...I'm only missing 28 dates in 1914-18, half of which are in July and some Sundays in August and October 1914. If I had purchased it is quite possible I wouldn't have gotten a single extra one, except probably 22/8/18 which is a Thursday and recently added when I realised my copy was damaged.

I agree that the Abacus lot is probably good value, but I'm having enough trouble with the reds, let alone continuing on in the violets and greens!

Went after it and it had nearly quadrupled price before opening live bids!

I think I ended up underbidder. Would have been a great start to keep it whole and going.
I guess I'll just have to start my own.

Would have been even better if they had bothered to advise just how many stamps were actually there instead of 000's. The Youtube video (didn't know they did that!) said there were 10 albums all full! There could have been 20,000 stamps. I counted about 2,100 penny reds in the first album alone.

I'll never know. :(

My supply has virtually dried up, but time to do an update:-

Image

Thanks to Gordon, a member here, who sent me 3 dates. One, I thought , was possibly a scarce shade, so I sent it back. I will always do that, although I'm no expert.

Thank goodness the fuss over my award as OPD, order of the philatelic date has died down, but in the spirit of the occasion, I'll sign off-

Brad,

Your 'stamp' arrived today, in pretty quick time. I imagine the priority means it didn't have to go to our mail sorting facility in Newcastle.

And a great surprise. A perfect postmark and on a mourning cover no less.

Image

I wish I could offer something in exchange, but I'm afraid our collecting interests are worlds apart.

I also received 20+ 1920 dates, all Large Multiple from Stampboarder Josto, from Germany. I was more than happy to pay his suggested price of $10 each. The distribution of my LM wmks now shows a clear pattern. I have no copies in 1919- pity, because they would be Cookes. From March-Aug 1920 they are nearly all LM. Of those that are not, many are perfed O.S. My last LM is Sept.2 1920. This makes sense since archival records show that Harrison made a single printing in November 1919 and stocks must have run out in less than a year.

Anyway, time for an update...……...

Just to repeat, I'm more than happy to pay. These collections go quite well at auction, but price per stamp is not great, so apart from July 1914, not too much.

Glad you liked it mobbor.

The one you had on your Happy Birthday thread could have been 31st March 1917, but this one is definitely 31st May 1917 & I am pleased to help you fill a gap. All the hard work you did on that thread providing me & others with so much enjoyment is payment enough for me.

Brad :)

PS Keep hold of that outer envelope with the priority label. It is from the sheetlet rather than the booklet & this is why it has the "selvedge" around it.

PPS I hope the guy at Rangeview did a nice postmark. He was up to his armpits with parcels at the time & said he would postmark later.

mobbor,

'5's do not have a descending loop at the end of their upper right bar i.e. no loop. I agree with Terry that it is a '6'.

Hi Evan,

If they come up, I do purchase 1922 and later dates. They are not high priority because they are very difficult. These are my missing dates from 1922:-

Jan.1-3,5,8,12,15-16,21-23,25-27,29. Feb. 2-5,8-9, 12,15-16,19,21,24,26.
Mar. 2,5,6- 7,12-13,17,19-20,22,24,26-30. Apr. 1-2,5-6,8-9,11-12,14,16,18,21,23-30.
May. 1-2,4,7,10-14,16-24,26-28,30. Jun. 1-4,6-9,11-15,18-19,21-22,24-30
Jul. 2,6-7,9,11-13,15-16,19,21,23-25,27-31. Aug. 2-9,12-23,25-31. Sep. 1,3-5,7,9-17,19-22,24-30.
Oct. 1-20,22-23,25-29,31. Nov. 1-2,4-12,14-27,29-30. Dec. 2-3,6,8-12,14-18,20-31.

It appears I didn't thank jojo here for that last set of 2022 stamps. My apologies.

I haven't found much in recent months, though I have received a few via Ebay- all 1922 except one 1928 & the one below_

23?/7/ and a simple error, leading to 9117!

Any suggestions about this date:-

It seems to 22SE, then a rectangle, followed by a 3.

These are the best I could get using Retroreveal and Postmark Reveal with a bit of playing around. Still not helpful.

Can't we by deduction presume it's Sept 23?

The KGVs weren't issued in 1913, and the reds were replaced by the violets in Feb 22 so a late use by 18 months isn't unheard of.

Any other assumption requires at least two of the rollers in an incorrect position.

I've seen date rollers that were laid out like this 1,2,3,-,▒,1,2,3 in some columns. So the roller was out of position by one space.
