The 9th AFL Footy Tipping Contest is Here. $100's in Prizes.

Post by fromdownunder »

We are off and running, again...

The Ninth Annual Stampboards AFL Footy Tipping Contest is now open for business for the 2016 season, and all members are welcome to join in the fun.

We had over 30 starters in 2008, over 50 in the next two years, and finished with over 70 last year, and we all had a really good time and a whole lot of fun. The winners in the first two years had never seen a game of Australian Rules Football between them in their life, so anybody can win.

Unfortunately since then, the Aussie tipsters seemed to have dominated first place, so it's time for another person not of Australian persuasion to step up to the plate and put us in our place.

Nine years in, I suspect that over AUD 5,000 in prizes have been distributed to dozens of members, You can become one of them

I just have one request - if you do not intend to post for the entire 6 month season, please do not even start - it costs me far more time and effort to try and chase up "missing" members posts and edit my spreadsheets than in does to simply count the winners of those who have posted. I have posted this message for several years and still have dozens of members who come along, post in Round One and then waste my time by not posting again. Please don't be one of them.

Between Round banter and discussion is actively encouraged, so this thread is used for ALL THINGS AUSTRALIAN RULES as well as for tipping.

We will have 3 main prizes, and they are worth winning as many of our members from previous years can attest. These are well worth the 5 minutes per week that it takes to tip.

There are prizes for the top 3 tipsters, plus probably other prizes, plus whatever members may offer occasionally as spot prizes during the season.

The Wooden Spoon (last place) prize has been discontinued.

First Prize: A $A150.00 Credit Voucher from Glen Stephens, which can be used to purchase anything from http://www.glenstephens.com/rarity.html that you wish.

Second Prize: A $A100 e-voucher for any of the 50,000+ stamp items on fletches1 huge website - http://stampmall.com.au - good for members globally. A fantastic prize for collectors of ANYTHING philatelic.

Third Prize: Kevin Morgan will again donate an annual "Stamp News" sub within Australia - value $A89.50. (An overseas winner only needs to pay the extra post cost.) Most generous, and thanks for assisting once again Kevin!

There will be also be a little prize for the best post of the season, judged subjectively by me.

Any member who wishes to offer random prizes for any round is welcome to do so. If you wish to offer something for a round, or for a special reason, please post in thread, set up the terms and conditions of the particular competition stipulations, post a scan of your proposed prize, and post the winning name ASAP after the Round is completed. In previous years I have been the overseer of such offers, but I see no need for me to be directly involved in such offers, especially when there is a potential conflict of interest, as I too am a participant in the Tipping Competition

To everybody, join in and have some fun - no skill needed, just five minutes required once a week to post who you think will win the six or nine matches. And you do not need to know anything about Australian Rules Football to play. Well, if you are new, you do need to know to pick Geelong without fail, and learn to hate Collingwood. :D

And anyone coming in late can join in for up to three weeks after the season starts, although you will be at a clear disadvantage to those who came in from the beginning.

The Footy starts on Thursday 24 March so get in on time.

Don't wait - subscribe now. No skill is required to play, so overseas members are definitely welcome. And of course, it is completely free.

The Rules:

A list of all forthcoming AFL matches will be listed each Monday (or Tuesday if there is a Monday match) during the season.

All you need to do is predict who will win each of the matches to be played over the following round.

One point will be awarded per correct selection or for a draw - draws cannot be predicted. A drawn game will be counted as a win.

If anybody predicts all winners in any given Round, two Bonus Points will be awarded to that person.

The total number of correct selections will be aggregated over the entire season and the winner(s) will be the person(s) who picks the most winners of the 198 games over the season.

All AFL results, the progressive AFL ladder and a progressive list of where you stand on the Stampboards tipping contest ladder will be posted weekly, usually within hours, but sometimes within a day, depending on how I feel, of the round being completed.

All predictions must be posted and board time-coded by 7:30PM Australian Eastern Standard Time each Friday (if there is a Thursday match, the Thursday deadline will apply). Late entrants will receive the "away" team for any match where the deadline has passed, but their selections for later matches will be valid.

Posts may not be edited after 7:30PM on the evening that the round starts.

If a member does not post at all in a particular week, he or she will be awarded the away (second named) teams for that week.

Any member who does not post in any three Rounds once having joined will be considered to have withdrawn from the competition. Further tips will not be considered valid.

Members will have up until round three to join the competition. Any member joining after Round one will get an averaged aggregate total of all existing competitors as a starting score.

If there is a tie for any of the prize positions at the end of the season the winner will be chosen by a count back. So if a tie occurs at the end of Round 23, the winner will be determined by who led the competition at the end of Round 22. If still a tie then the leader at Round 21 etc....

Any member who will be away at any time during the season has the choice of being automatically given the "away" teams as their selections, or may select for all the weeks they will be away in advance. NOTE: The "away" teams are always the second named teams

Go here for the complete 2016 AFL fixture.

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=69074

(still to be completed)

This will give you all the matches to be played while you are away.

The winners will be announced the Sunday evening immediately following the completion of Round 23.

If this is unclear in any way, please post your concerns on this thread and I will clarify anything you may have a problem with.

I discovered a long time ago that I am not perfect - not even close. But after seven years auditing this competition, I am slowly getting better. :D

Please post any queries on this thread, including my ability to count winners. I am notoriously lazy when it comes to responding to eMails.

I am unable to commit for a full season so won't tip this year. Hope to join in the banter though as the mighty Freo Docker's juggernaut heads towards its first premiership.

Wonder what the Eagles are paying to to not make the 8 this year?

Ok first lesson Australian Rules Football is a totally different game to Rugby & there are two games of Rugby, Rugby League & Rugby Union. So you need to stop watching rugby & switch over to the AFL channel. :)

After doing this I am sure you will start kicking goals.

Freo to be Premiers is $9 & West Coast to miss the 8 is $4.35, I think that makes it about $40 for the double. I reckon the bookies are betting a bit unders at the moment :!: :D

Just for fun, my rough as guts predictions from the end-of-season order at the end of the last regular season. Hoping this provides some good talking points :)

Disclaimer; I've been labelled a one-eyed Freo fan but this has taken awhile to type on a phone and there has been (some) thought go into it. Anyhow, it's fun to put your thoughts on the line. PS, I think it will be a close season and 6 to 14 may only be separated by a few wins (and %age points).

Fremantle

Should be top 4 again. May threaten due to natural progression of kids, yes the new Ross, great mature players, and also added firepower in Bennell. Prediction; #1

West Coast Eagles

I have a few cartons on them not making the 8 this year. Rose before their time and I'm still not convinced they are a consistent package. However, they played in the GF last year and the nature of the West is you win most of your home games, snatch a few away, and you're playing finals. Prediction; 8, just

Hawthorn

Well, it's Hawthorn. Going for the Four-thorn this year. A team of veterans that get better with age (Hodge/Mitchell..) May struggle early up front but will be a certain top 4 team. Prediction; #3

Sydney Swans

Two years away from finals. A waning Buddy with plenty of great up and comers like Mitchell/Parker/McGlynn. Nothing in the ruck department or the coaches box. Prediction; #11, and Horse to be feeling the pressure before the bye.

Richmond

A lot of injuries and their premiums, Martin, Cotchin, Delidio and Maric are... damaged and delicate, weak bodied, delicate and weak, and weak (in that order). The best team song will not save them. 'Nuff said. Prediction: #9, but that is what the team and their supporters expect. If looking bottom 4 before the midpoint of the season then bye bye Hardwick.

Western Bulldogs

Can't call 'em a surprise package anymore but their best players are their youngsters and they are damn good. Dahlhaus, The Bont, Stringer, Libba, Hunter, Wallis and, as the King and I would suggest... Etcetera, Etcetera, Etcetera. Oh, and Boyd The Elder. Surely top 8, perhaps #5.

Adelaide Crows

Lost Danger but top 8 for sure. The Crouch Bros will provide the tackle and run, the veteran Thommo will balance a fit Sloane and their spine is safe with Big Sauce in the ruck, and The Eddie Betts Show supporting Big Tex up front. Prediction; #7

North Melbourne

I'll be honest, I can't place the 'Roos. Haven't been able to tip them well for years and I'm not convinced they know where they're at. Coach is a good public speaker and that's why he still has a job. Core group of players are old and or injury prone and a fit Wells is not enough to make the 8. Prediction; heading backwards at #13.

Port Adelaide

Another one difficult to predict and could almost be top or bottom. Either top 4 or out of the 8. Plenty of run but is there enough grunt? Hartlett is the new barometer as Wingard was last year; if Hartlett plays well (and Ebert doesn't run out of puff after 3 games) then top 8. Wines is three seasons out from a Brownlow, and the midfield and forwardline with Dixon are strong, but there is nothing down back. Only rebounding defender is out with a well deserved broken jaw. Prediction; though it goes against everything I just said, #6. But out first final.

Geelong Cats

Straight back into the top 4 and premiership contention. Best recruiting of any club and set to reap the benefits of the kids they've played over the last few years. Quality midfield, the most athletic player in the comp (Blicavs) plus the equal most courageous player this decade in Selwood (tied with Rockliff for mine). Prediction; #2

GWS Giants

Dunno. Thinking bottom four. Like Gold Coast they have a good list but without the history (by this I mean the old fellas who have grown up around a club, never played a game but both serve the club and keep it honest). I'm not convinced of their authenticity. This is not in itself a barrier, look at what the Melbourne Storm built quickly. Prediction; #10

Collingwood

For me this is another Geelong. Talent on every line and fit enough to take advantage of no subs. When you have two of the greatest midfield partners ever in Swan and Pendles playing forward and back respectively you know you are in good shape. Great leader as a coach in Buckley and best value Brownlow bet in Taylor Adams. Prediction; #4 and a second chance in the finals. Also a last chance for another flag for Swanny.

Melbourne

One club where a good coach doth not a September make. More toiling from the warrior Nathan Jones but a disappointing #14 for the 7 fans left (including the team).

St Kilda

I think the Saints will finish #12. I reckon they will be a much better side than last year when they finished 14th, but the improvement in some teams outside the 8 in 2015, Collingwood, Geelong and Port for example, means they stay down the ladder. I thought they'd be wooden spooners last year and if I'm as wrong again then they make the 8! Two of the best midfielders going in Jack Stevens and Armitage but not sold on any of the other key position players. Riewoldt not considered as a KPP due to him shedding kilos to play in the mids in perhaps a last season.

Essendon

#18. Lots to say but to do them justice, especially the top-ups, would take a lot of writing. Easier for you to read Brad's thread on the saga. Added danger for next year if they finish 18 and all the non-sanctioned players, like Goddard, lose their passion.

Gold Coast Suns

Unlucky to have Swallow injured (the brothers are delicate), and Ablett and Prestia not quite right. When no-one in Oz can name their key forward, their #1 backman, #1 ruck or vice-captain them you know you're in trouble. Prediction; #17.

Brisbane Lions

Two possible future Brownlows but Rockliff aint fit and ruckmen just don't get many votes these days. Beams out indefinitely hurts. I'd like to say higher but #16. Still class around the paddock with Zorko, Robinson and Hanley.

Carlton

Cripps will win a second best and fairest (in his 3rd year!) but that won't help them finish higher than #15.

What do you think???

Aww,

Can't you just do Rugby instead?

At least we know the Aussies and Kiwi's will generally win.

Top 5 in order, by guessing, but only for fun;

1) Brisbane Lions
2) Freemantle
3) Essendon
4) Carlton
5) Geelong

Just over 24 hours to go before Round One tips close. Don't forget, else you get the away teams if you come in later in the Season (up to Round 3).
