South Canterbury farmer-cum-inventor extraordinaire Richard Pearse lived and farmed in Waitohi, a few miles from Timaru in South Canterbury, around the turn of the twentieth century. One of Pearse's achievements was the invention of an aeroplane. According to contemporary reports Pearse became the first man to fly in late March 1902 or 1903. Certainly this was many months before the Johnny come lately Wright brothers famous flight in December 1903.

Today an attractive memorial monument to Richard Pearse is situated on the side of the road near where Pearse's famous flight is said to have taken place. The monument was photographed by Ken Elliott and this was used as the basis for the design of two different Timpex 2009 customised advertising stamps (aka cals) for publicity and fundraising purposes. These stamps have been produced by Canpex Inc. which is financially assisting Timpex 2009.

Two different stamps using the same adapted design have been produced: i) with self adhesive gum and ii) with conventional gum. Each stamp has been produced in sheets of 50 and are now available for purchase.

The final Timpex 2009 souvenirs to be produced by Canpex Inc are now available. Like the Richard Pearse monument customised advertising stamps the latest Timpex 2009 souvenirs also feature South Canterbury icons.

One of the latest customised advertising stamps features a Model T Ford railcar. This was in use on the Washdyke to Fairlie branch line some 80 years ago and is one of only two such Model T Ford railcars ever built; the other has yet to be located in South Canterbury. Originally a Model T Ford car this was adapted to fit on rails to carry passengers where such traffic did not warrant the use of a train with carriages.

Today in the summer months this restored vehicle plys a small part of the original line for tourist trips. Only conventionally gummed stamps were produced featuring the Model T Ford railcar.

Finally a customised advertising stamp to mark the remarkable race horse Phar Lap.

Phar Lap was born in Timaru, South Canterbury and whilst he never raced in New Zealand amongst his achievements was winning the famous Australian Melbourne Cup and Cox Plate horse races in the 1930s during the depression. Only conventionally gummed stamps were produced featuring the soon to be unveiled statue of Phar Lap.

These stamps are available in blocks of four mint or used, or in complete sheets only as all Timpex 2009 FDCs of these stamps sold out very quickly. Phar Lap FDCs were cancelled in Timaru on 5 June 2009 and the Model T Ford railcar FDCs were cancelled in Timaru on 12 June 2009.

Finally imperforate laser colour proofs of these stamps are available as a unit of four: a single of each stamp and a single imperforate proof.

Canpex has been asked by the Christchurch Junior Stamp Club to help raise funds for the 2009 New Zealand national youth stamp camp. Children and adult helpers from Auckland, Wellington, Palmerston North and also from Christchurch attended this event from 12 to 18 July 2009 during the school holidays. One of the campers 13 year old Hanley Wright designed the 2009 youth stamp camp customised advertising stamps.

These are available as blocks of four mint and used or in complete sheets only as the campers' and other pre sale orders meant that all FDCs were sold out. The self adhesive stamp FDCs were postmarked in Kaiapoi on 13 July 2009.

Three imperforate laser colour proof sheets were obtained prior to signing off - the design of the proof stamps differs slightly from those issued. These are available in a unit of two a single proof and a single stamp.
