Info sought on this very old NSW 'Government Tramways' travel ticket

Post by fossick »

Hi

Hoping members might be able to shed some light on this.

Image

Age unknown but it was found in the old stores rooms of the NSW Police Commissioners Office in the 1960's and was very old looking and fragile then. Other items and documents stored with it dated back to the 1800's.

Condition is such that a fairies f##t would damage it, the missing corner is here somewhere if I was inclined to look.

I am assuming that it was issued to Government employees to travel on the trams.

Any information will be appreciated.

Is it rare/collectable etc?

Thanks

John, back 100 years back before highways and cars, Tram tracks were far more prevalent in main cities like Sydney. (Cars and highways apparently never made it to MEL, so they still have city trams!)

Heaps of different style tickets were issued here, some fairly ornate. I assume this is simply a one way ticket for a Government Tram. Others might know more.

Pitt Street’s last tram ran in the early hours of 29 September 1957.

Sydney’s last tram ran from Hunter Street in the city to La Perouse in 1961, ending 100 years of tram services.

So has to be before 1961.

It looks quite old. Normally they all tell you from and to printed on the ticket and sometimes what line.

I can not find a similar ticket image online.

But is it even Australian?

Given its provenance I have little doubt that it is from NSW.

My thoughts are that it was probably from a booklet of such tickets issued to NSW Police Officers to facilitate ease of movement around Sydney.

Were not State Police always free on State Govt transit?

I've caught trams and trains with Traralgon3844 and he said flashing his Victoria Police badge for Victoria travel was all that was required?

Not that anyone asked other of us. Paying fares in Victoria on public transport seems a HIGHLY optional extra volunteer activity!
