Just testing again. I guess many would say that the man in the stamps was the guy that started the whole thing.
Although I dare say, that there will be some who disagree?
I have recently started to read a book that was kindly given to me, by another member at my local stamp club in Stoke. ( Thanks Roy!)
Although it's not new, it's actually an
interesting book.
My knowledge of stamp stuff is pretty limited really.
20231217_230005.jpg
Just a coincidence that the man in the Portugal stamps is at the start of the book.
Happy stamp collecting everyone. And a Very Happy And Peaceful Christmas to you all too. (Bit early, I know) ;)

My First and only Penny Black.
20231217_231754.jpg
I will try and say hello properly when I'm not feeling as tired as I am right now.
As stated. This is the first and only Penny Black stamp that I've ever owned. I don't know much about it.
It's been lying around for ages, and it's looking pretty knackered. ( A bit like me really). ;)
I don't really collect British stamps, although I do find all stamps and stamp stuff quite interesting.
I like the Maltese Cross.
I remember reading somewhere that President Roosevelt used to relax and unwind from the stresses of life by messing about with his stamps.
I think that's about the same for me. just in the last half hour, digging out my Penny Black has helped me to forget about life's worries for a while.
So, I guess, I can get to sleep knowing that I have something in common with the great man, when it comes to stamp collecting.
Good night all. 8-)

Go back to your original files and crop them so only the cover shows.

This advice applies to photographic images, rather than scans. But I hope it will work for scans as well.

For any image, first crop to the size of the cover (or crop scanned area), then rotate through 360º - and then further rotate until the cover at the correct orientation. Try that.

Possibly from Lithuania. Possibly WW2? Possibly propaganda? Label?

I'd welcome info please.

This stamp is about the size of the Spanish towm badge stamps or Greek national costumes ones.

Thanks alastairH :D

"Possibly Lithuania" seems to be confirmed by the face value "Lt. 20":
Wikipedia wrote:The Lithuanian litas (ISO currency code LTL, symbolized as Lt; plural litai (nominative) or litų (genitive) was the currency of Lithuania, until 1 January 2015, when it was replaced by the euro. It was divided into 100 centų (genitive case; singular centas, nominative plural centai).

The litas was first introduced on 2 Oct 1922 after World War I, when Lithuania declared independence, and was reintroduced on 25 June 1993 following a period of currency exchange from the Soviet ruble to the litas with the temporary talonas then in place.

The name was modeled after the name of the country (similar to Latvia and its lats). From 1994 to 2002, the litas was pegged to the U.S. dollar at the rate of 4 to 1. The litas was pegged to the euro at the rate of 3.4528 to 1 since 2002. The euro was expected to replace the litas by 1 Jan 2007, but persistent high inflation and the economic crisis delayed the switch. On 1 Jan 2015 the litas was switched to the euro at the rate of 3.4528 to 1.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithuanian_litas

The special letter ž is indeed a letter in the Lithuanian alphabet.
Google Translate from Lithuanian offers we are grinding for "mesgrižtame". That's not particularly helpful or enlightening, other than to confirm that it is probably meaningful in Lithuanian.

The font of the capital L in the currency abbreviation is reminiscent of a German Fraktur font Gothic L, suggesting 1930s usage...

Summary: The intrinsic evidence supports the suggestion that this is a Lithuanian stamp. Some "guesses", based on its appearance and the history of the currency, suggest it is a fund-raising label (cinderella) of the 1930s, but those ideas might be far from the mark... However, the top denominations of stamps in that period were Lt.1 and Lt.3, so this stamp seems to have a very high face value if it was indeed a 1930s Lithuanian cinderella.

This thread as per it's heading is to test your proficiency with posting images not to ask questions about the stamp.

There are other Forums where you can ask about stamps where members will find your question. Not here! I am sure you will be able to find them.

In relation to your image I would square it up, I would place a background, behind it, crop the background, scan it at at least 600 dpi, so we see something like this:

Apologies to Brad = BigSaint and to alastairH — I should not have addressed the identification question about the Lithuanian stamp in this thread. When I saw the image, I thought I was viewing it in the thread where I recommended it be posted (I was mistaken :o ) Evidently alastairH didn't see my post (or else decided the present thread was a better location).

As explained in private, I misunderstood the (undisclosed) reason for the criticism, thinking it was related to the subject matter. I only repeated the link with the intention of maintaining the ethical standard of "acknowledgement of sources", but I see now that it was that very linkage you were criticising. My apologies for the misdirection.

This very attractive 10s QV high value definitive (SG183) has now appeared as Prize F in the 100K post celebratory give-away! :D
https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=104879&start=1010

Background: To circumvent duty on boxes of cigars, it was discovered that they could be bought in Jersey, and the high postage required to send them to addresses in England was paid for with neatly cancelled high value QV definitives of the period, which of course had a significant value. This explains why many of those high value stamps have neat Jersey date stamps.

Recent auction purchase of SA one shilling official service, telegraphic despatch. Appears to be SG O28, but there is no stop after the O.
