Guess the location of the picture on this postcard.

Post by lesbootman »

As an alternative to postbox hunting I thought it might be an idea to try to identify where a picture postcard comes from. The ones that have a place-name printed on the front wouldn't be much of a challenge, unless that was obscured!

So the challenge is to work out the continent, country, region, and place-name - so identifying where the picture on the postcard was taken. Whoever posted the postcard being hunted will give clues and guidance based on guesses made.

When the location has been correctly guessed the poster can post a scan of the reverse of their card to confirm the location (if they so wish).

The correct guesser then posts a picture postcard of their own and we keep going.

Good luck everyone!

Here's the first card:

Where is this?
Where is this?

Yes, I agree, but we can only wait and see!

One of the things I find most rewarding about hunting for post boxes is seeing the different parts of the world (particularly the UK and Australia) on Google earth as you're searching and the divergence of scenery and places of interest. I'd anticipate that the same thing would apply hunting for postcards - and it could be interesting seeing how places have changed over the years if people post old ones.

I've had the Middle Eastern postcard that I posted above since 1980.

I'll have a go, and guess Haifa.

You mentioned it was posted in 1980, and I think that should be a 'rule', too - when posting a new card, give the date of posting, or an approximation if unused. I think that would add another interesting angle.
It'll be a bit different to the postboxes as postcards tend to be of more interesting subjects than random street corners.
I'll have to dig deep, as most of mine are of ERoY!

Is cropping allowed?

I've no problems with the idea of saying when the card was posted (or purchased if unused). I bought this card (which is unused) while I was visiting the place in question - which is why I know it was 1980.

As to cropping, I don't know. Rules tend to change anyway, Terry made a few changes to the post box thread after it had been going for quite a while.

The postcard is not from Haifa (it's not from Israel). Head south and east.

Al Khobar is correct. The King Fahd Causeway had not been built in 1980, hence me taking the shortest flight I've ever been on from Dhahran to Bahrain on my way to ArabBuild '80. It was a simple case of taking off and then landing!

It may be a water tower like the one in Al Kharj. I don't know. It does not look as substantial as the Al Kharj example.

I was here in the spring of 1991. Ended up unexpectedly and spent a few weeks working.

I did some retouching on the name and the flag.

Here is the original and reverse

It's related to The Gulf War in 1991

I was a newly graduated medical doctor (GP) working with the Turkish Ministry of Health, in a small village in Central Anatolia. It was a quiet and easy job. Suddenly the Gulf War started, Saddam Hussein attacked his own people in Northern Iraq, who moved North and crossed into Turkish territory to save their lives. Turkish government tried to help by establishing camps, and transferred healthcare personnel from areas of low need, like mine.

I stayed in Şırnak for a couple days, then went to my assigned camp, Işıkveren.

The postmark is Şırnak 2, but it was used in the tent postoffice serving the Camp, far from the province center.

As for puffin's new card I'd guess

Oceania
Vanuatu
(which would have been known as the New Hebrides Condominium back in 1961).

Really?
I'd say Lake Windermere, Cumbria, UK.

Revenge on the Puffin for getting my postbox in 3 shots last night!

I have actually considered that postbox by the pier for the other quiz quite recently.
My father in law had a little sailing boat on Windermere for years, so I know it well.

I'm out and about in Hull today, so no scanner. Les can put one up in the meantime if he likes.
Collecting mint British Empire / Colonial up to the 1960s, Bridlington & East Yorkshire postal history, and wacky postcards.
