Henry Ford and his legacy - on stamps and covers etc.

Post by Firewolf »

Hello everybody

One of my interests are automobiles. Within this topic, Ford has a special place, so one of my collections is about Ford: stamps, stationery, covers, postcards, scale models, books, and so on.

My focus is on official Ford covers, official Ford dealer covers and covers with meter cancels with Ford advertising.

I start this thread to show some of my material. If there is already a similar thread, please let me know. I did not find any (yet).

If someone has similar covers, please feel free to share. It can help me with compiling a list of existing material.

I don't think I have to introduce Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company. I will refer to Wikipedia for this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Ford
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Motor_Company

I will start with a cover which has a special place in my collection.

It is a cover from Henry Ford himself (or from his office). With content!

The letter is written and signed by V.L. Shevlin on May 5th, 1930 to Adam Zeile in Wurttemberg, Germany. V.L. Shevlin was an assistant secretary of Henry Ford. Not sure if male or female.

In "Friends, Families & Forays: Scenes from the Life and Times of Henry Ford" by Ford R. Bryan information is found that he/she was already an assistant secretary in 1924 (ref: https://books.google.be/books?id=9DrJz4egJEYC).

On Picclick, I found an image of another letter signed by V.L. Shevlin in 1934 (ref: https://picclick.com/Henry-Ford-Reply-To-Request-August-28-1934-164919330543.html).

The cover is dated May 6th and was posted in Dearborn, Michigan, USA, location of the main headquarters of Ford Motor Company. On the back is an arrival cancel of Sindelfingen on May 19th.

A 5c stamp from 1922 was used (SW 468D with perforation 11 x 10 1/2).

My grandfather worked at the original Ford plant from 1926-1956. As a child I can remember walking with my grandmother to meet him at the streetcar when he came home in the morning. Growing up in Detroit we all knew about Henry Ford and his contribution to the automobile industry. I'll have to see what I can find that might be related to this topic.

Very interesting subject to collect. I know nothing about it but looking at Google, I see there is a plenty of material to collect, good luck!

As far as I know, Israel issued only one stamp shows Ford automobile. It issued on November 27, 1994 and shows Ford Model T used as a bus in Israel (then under British Mandate) during the 1920's:

Israel 1994 Ford Bus.jpg

Stamp was issued in a set shows the history of public transport in Israel. The rest two stamps show White Super (1940's) and Leyland Royal Tiger (1960's). I have one set spare and ready to send you if you need to add it to your collection:

Israel 1994 Buses.jpg

Edit: I just realized that the same Ford T model is depicted on the First Day commemorative postmark. I don't have this FDC but will look after it if interested:

Ford Australia is the Australian subsidiary of Ford Motor Company which is an American company and was founded in Geelong, Victoria, in 1925

So this machine slogan cancel was introduced in 2000 & is still going strong in 2014 now that Ford has been in Australia for 89 years.

Nice items! Looks like the Ford is rolling... ;)
Thanks for the contributions. This helps me with completing my list and looking for new items.

Next from my collection. Two items from Ford in Antwerp (Belgium).
Ford started activities in Belgium in 1922. Production in Antwerp started in 1930. In 1964 production moved from Antwerp to Genk.

The first item is an official card to announce the arrival of an order, probably a new car. The card was franked with a meter cancel B1040, type Hasler. The rate was 0,90 Belgian Francs, the rate for a postcard (15.12.1948 - 14.12.1952). The meter cancel shows an image of the factory. An extra date cancel was applied showing 6 December 1951.

The second item is an officeal envelope. This was also contains the oval logo in the inside. A similar meter cancel B1040 is used; this time without advertising flag. The rate was 3 Belgian Francs, the rate for a standard cover within Europe (01.11.1959 - 14.11.1969). The date cancel is from 9 January 1964.

If anyone knows about earlier / newer dates of the B1040 cancel, used at Ford, feel free to let me know. These 2 are the only ones I found by now. Before and after the B1040 I also found B633 cancels used by Ford in Antwerp.

Australia 2006 'Driving Through The Years' was a set of 5 featuring motor cars. One SG: 2673 featured a 1917 Ford TT Truck.

Nothing out of the ordinary for the sheet stamp, but one of the self adhesive booklet issues contained an error.

The date of issue (in micro printing) was omitted on one stamp in the booklet of 10.

On obscure one but it is a Ford.

Inventive Australia issue from 2009. 55cents available as a sheet stamp or self adhesive and in booklets.

Australia lays claim to inventing the ute and this follows on from BigSaint's post featuring the 1934 Ford Coupe.

That looks like an XD - XE model.

Yet another obscure Ford stamp.

Australia 2012 issue for 50 Years of Bathurst.

The 'Blue' stamps features a Ford racing car.

The Bathurst 1000 is a 1,000-kilometre (621.4 mi) touring car race held annually on the Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia. It is currently run as part of the Supercars Championship, the most recent incarnation of the Australian Touring Car Championship. In 1987 it was a round of the World Touring Car Championship.

Widely regarded as the most important motorsport event in Australia,[according to whom?] the Bathurst 1000 is colloquially known as The Great Race among motorsport fans and media. The race concept originated with the 1960 Armstrong 500 at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, before being relocated to Bathurst in 1963 and continuing there in every year since. The race was traditionally run on the Labour Day long weekend in New South Wales, in early October. Since 2001, the race is run on the weekend after the long weekend, normally the second weekend in October.

Traditionally a battle between Ford and Holden (GMH)

The Trading Post Supercar was piloted by Will Davison.

Then there are the PNC's Postal Numismatic Covers of late. They generally cost between $20 and $40 but the limited edition one shown below has an eye watering price tag.

I did watch these Australian Supercars Championships already in the past. Heavy V8's on street circuits; like it.

The error on the 2006 Ford TT Truck is new information for me. Thanks.

Adding to the 1997 Classic Cars. The booklet contained a contest to win a Ford, hence a Ford Falcon GLi Sedan is featured on the outside.

In Finland only very few company perfins are known (11 to be specific). One of the is FORD, which is one of the more common ones. 7,5% of stamps having a company perfin are estimated to have FORD. The perfin has been in use from Dec 1930 to 1940. Perfins on Finnish stamps are rare and I cannot recall ever seeing one in flesh. Here is one picture for you to see. They were auctioned in 2017. The pair sold for 17€.

My (lovely) wife tells me that her Great Uncle Willy worked at a Ford plant (her Grandmother at that time lived in Ann Arbor- her mother was born there). The story was that you daren't leave the production line overnight or someone else would take your job! Of course, as we know, some of Henry Ford's views would be far from acceptable today!

Next is a railway parcel document, used to accompany small packages (up to 5 kg). Recognizable on the document type (D.C.1985) and the railway parcel stamp type (contains the postal horn and the inscription "Postcolli" / "Colis Postaux"). There are 2 types of railway parcel stamps. Unfortunately most (all?) catalogues, even the Belgian ones, put them all together. This package was sent from Brussels to Ford Antwerp on 13 June 1951. Ford was marked in blue pencil. Nearly all railway parcel documents to Ford that I own or have seen, have this. I assume a lot of packages were sent to Ford and this helped to easily combine the packages.

I have a slight feeling that Canada in 1914 was using Ford T cars to carry the mail.

In 1971 they issued a booklet with a Ford T mail van from 1914. In 1981 a postal stationery was issued with an image of a similar car.

Nice one. Thanks for sharing. These type of covers I like to see posted. As these are not catalogued, it helps my inventarisation and search actions.

henryfordcarprototype.jpg

Ballinascarthy situated on the N72 between Bandon & Clonakilty is the birthplace of William Ford the father of Henry Ford, who founded the Ford Motor Company in 1903.

William Ford emigrated to America in 1847 at the age 21, along with the rest of the family, including his brothers and mother, who was then in her 70s.

In 1861 William married Mary Litogot Ahern whose family emigrated from Fair Lane in Cork City, and went on to have eight children, the second born was Henry.

In 1917 Henry Ford selected Cork for the first Ford factory to be built outside North America

A replica of silver Model T Ford was erected in honour of the Ford family.

Why is he being celebrated?- another monument to be pulled down? His views are said to have influenced Hitler and the product has polluted the Planet!

Enjoy your whiskey... I'll have to plan a visit to Ireland and Cork... I need to taste that whiskey in the Ford tavern at least one time in my life... ;)

Next my Irish items in my Ford collection...

A cover from the Henry Ford & Son Ltd in Cork. As Cill Dara already mentioned, the first Ford factory outside of US was establised at Cork. It was active from 17 April 1917 till 13 July 1984. The cover was sent on 7 Mai 1941 from Cork (Corcaigh) to the Ford headquarters in Dearborn, USA. It is franked with a meter cancel showing the Ford logo. The censor strips add some detail to the cover.

Next a postal stationey issued in 1986 depicting a Ford T.

And a stamp from 2003 depicting Henry Ford. Issued to the celebrate 100 years of Ford Motor Company.
