Let's make a VERY useful stampboards CROWD FUNDING gesture!!

Post by Global Admin »

.
I was just looking at the Admin log of downtime and outages for stampboards for the past year or so, since our super MAJOR upgrade in mid 2020. We moved from the very flaky and buggy and erratic servers in Oklahoma, and I see we have since had almost ZERO downtime or outages, due to our new robust and large private servers in the USA, with relay back-ups, and load sharing on both coasts there.

We have logged just a few minutes downtime in TOTAL since then. An incredible achievement, given the large user and visitor traffic we have here, and the vast data storage and back-up now of 10 million messages.

Facebook and YouTube has literally been out of action way more than we have in that time! My BANK website here is down regularly. As are most Stamp Auction sites. stampboards is as solid as a rock.

Marshalrusty aka Yuriy in New York as always keeps it all ticking along very smoothly in the background, and is just about to update us to the very latest phpBB software, with even more features. He sourced the hosting company after days of research, and chose SUPERBLY, I am sure all will agree. :!:

AND we have expanded our storage to an ever larger server system, seeing we now have about TWO MILLION images self-hosted on our own SUPER SECURE servers now - we are truly the Wikipedia of stamp collecting. 8-)

We are the WORLD'S number one Stamp Bulletin Board because of our millions of google indexed images, and the vast depth of TEN MILLION posts, and that costs money to do, and to back-up robustly and securely forever.

Yuriy is not even a stamp collector - he just likes us as a quirky fun project for him, and has helped out for well over a decade or more here, so I'd again encourage ALL members to do your bit, and fund a pizza and some beers etc via PayPal in ANY currency - https://paypal.me/rusko (Think of it as your oblique Stampboards Membership Fee, or Crowd Funding!)

Just a few 100 generous Community minded members sending only a modest $10 or $20 pays for a lot of his time, and shows he is appreciated by those here who benefit from HIS super back-room skills. Please do it NOW. CROWD FUNDING at its finest. A new issue stamp set at the PO costs you that! :)

Think of just how many valuable things you have learned, shared, swapped etc, and the many new friends made here. All of them worth over $US20 or so a year, I am certain. :!: :!:

All the US dedicated server hosting is at my cost, with each coast back-ups, and always will be, and that runs to VERY many $US1,000s a year, but please do show your small personal appreciation for the tech whizz who keeps that base all ticking along with no glitches in the background all year. He has quietly in the background saved us from disaster MANY times over our long history, trust me. Spam attacks, DDOS attacks, hacking attempts etc, all foiled etc, as he knows what he is doing. :!:

Marshalrusty aka Yuriy in New York as always keeps it all ticking along very smoothly in the background, and is just about to update us to the very latest phpBB software, with even more features. He sourced the hosting company after days of research, and chose SUPERBLY, I am sure all will agree. :!: Yuriy is one of the head coding and design developers globally of this phpBB board skeleton, used by millions of Bulletin Boards worldwide, most far smaller than this of course, and has customised the back-end of this version entirely for our needs - larger easy to read fonts given our age demographic, added many different navigation buttons, very special attention to the easy adding of LARGE images, and many other features not immediately obvious to the casual user.

I have never sent a text message in my life - true, and have never used Facebook or Twitter or Instagram, or had a Zoom meeting etc, so if you relied on my ''tech skills'', there would be a totally blank screen facing you right now!

There Are NO Free Lunches In Life - so, please PayPal Yuriy a Pizza and some beers! https://paypal.me/rusko .... PEOPLE POWER. 8-)

Add a note here you have done that if you wish - but even if it stays private please do assist, we/you owe Yuriy a LOT. :!:

I resist the now WEEKLY sales pitches from global ad companies aiming to 'OPTIMISE' this site with endless intrusive pop up ads, distracting 'click bait' links all over, ads inside every post, IP tracking, cookie tracking requirements, and all sorts of nasty bells and whistles that would make me rather rich - but drive most users here insane! THEY see the huge traffic here, and that is their bread and butter. I sign up to none of that, as I hate them, and assume others do too. If they add that stuff in, I make a fortune, and then can offer an 'ad free stampboards' option at $US50 a year, and many would leap at that too, and I make another fortune! So get ahead of the pack, and PayPal Yuri $US20-$US25 now, and you are more than revenue neutral! It is a simple choice really. https://paypal.me/rusko :!:

Thanks in advance -

Glen Stephens - owner of www.stampboards.com

Thanks folks - the Community Spirit and generosity of stampboarders globally shines through - AS ALWAYS.

So far, we have Germany, Dubai, UK, Australia and Canada members stepping up. :!:

Hopefully a LOT more pizzas are on the way to Yuriy. Watch this space. The cost of paying any highly skilled tech whizz to do this specialised stuff on a commercial basis, would simply blow your mind. Just the last major upgrade alone in mid 2020 took over a HUNDRED hours of his time. That is before one adds the many $1,000s a year (we cannot dodge!) for our own USA based servers, that I pre-pay.

That is a $US10,000-$A13,500 time cost alone commercially, for just a major update. No way would the board be so useful and tailored and smooth running, if we used the bog basic version, as clearly impossible for that kind of outlay be funded ordinarily, on a totally FREE board.

We have had a lot of modifications custom created and tweaked for just our board, and they are often complex and tricky to code, and test and develop and integrate. But they do work, and they are perfect for our users. 8-)

I personally hate pop-up ads, bait links, and the insidious IP tracking and cookies and adware, that almost EVERY site on the planet now uses - except this one, and have resisted all attempts to sign me up for that, as if I hate them, I know others will too.

There was a glitch with Yuri's PayPal account for a few hours after I posted this, and some earlier payments will have been returned to sender's account - as mine certainly was. All sorted now, but for those who donated before this post, please check your PayPal account, and see if the funds were bounced back to you - as mine was, with no advice from PayPal. I just re-did it, and all good. 8-)

All sorted now, so please show your appreciation to someone who is not even a stamp collector, and is VERY busy, at a CEO level of a massive tech operation, but who keeps stampboards running year after year - via PayPal in ANY currency to - yuriy [at] rusko.org - (Think of it as your oblique annual Stampboards Membership Fee, or Crowd Funding!)

Thanks in advance for your support - it all assists and shows Yuriy folks appreciate his input - do not leave it all to "others". :!:

Done.

Also I confirmed with Yuriy what I had suspected for a long time which is that image captions are not currently included in the onboard search function.

So all those people who have complied with Glen’s request to make life easy for Google etc to find the images without also putting text in their post, have made it impossible for anybody to find the images through the onboard search facility.

However Yuriy also said that it wasn’t a difficult thing to add in, which is good news for the hundreds of images on the Ireland stamps and FDC and other similar threads, which are mainly show but no tell.

Thanks Yuriy!

Yes folks like you with experience in this area Jon, will realise the 100 hours we spent merging from one host to another (a tug or war battle in itself, that took mannnnny hours!) and then the total upgrade to do after that, flies by REAL fast!

As norvic has pointed out, captions are not indexed by the Stampboards search engine. Several of us on the FDC threads used to provide detailed captions, as requested by Glen. BigSaint is the best example of the detailed description writer.

I stopped writing detailed descriptions when I discovered they were not indexed. If the search engine is modified to include the captions, please announce the change and I will restart writing detailed descriptors.

Thank you, Yuriy.

Yuriy asked me last week if we wanted the attachment CAPTIONS added to the onboard search database, and I told him I assumed they already were. No-one here had ever advised me there was an issue with them.

He said that is not an out-of-the-box feature of the phpBB platform, but like anything we need, he can write computer code to ensure that occurs on our version, and when it does, all past captions will be indexed too it seems.

So yes KEEP using detailed captions please! I assume when he makes them indexable somehow, that google spiders and bots will also then be able to access the words under each image - again I ASSUMED that was the case.

There are about 55 MILLION phpBB powered boards globally. Lots are essentially dead, lots are filled with spam, and MOST are the bog basic versions, with no 1000 hours of tech tweaking done on such features and coding and custom modifications on the back end like this, that Yuriy has done for us.

We update to the very latest version 3.5.5 shortly, and for the tech minded this is what that contains - make any sense to anyone here?!

Thanks for the ongoing pleasing Community support folks. Keep it all coming please we have a large amount of work coming up this month behind the scenes.

Most have no idea how many detailed hours are burned behind the scenes, on such a seemingly simple thing like indexing captions etc.

This is all a total re coding of the way basic boards work. 99.99% of boards do not use it or need it, so it is not standard.

Due to our million plus images we already are far bigger than the basic image hosting supports, so Yuriy bolted on a program called Sphinx, and integrated it into the basic software.

That program is getting major overhauls and updates and improvements as we speak. For those who think just bolting these things on is simple - take a read of all this! Geeks talking to geeks in another language makes my head spin -

Thanks very much to everyone who has sent pizza money; it is very much appreciated! I am actively working on updating the forum to the latest version.

The server backend was also just updated, and should be running even smoother than before.

Glen has some excellent ideas for some improvements to the site, so those will be coming shortly as well!

It should be very similar to the current site, but if anything is broken, then please let me know. Attachments won't show up because there isn't enough space to make a copy of that absolutely enormous directory :P

Note: All changes made there will disappear when the test is over; don't post anything of value.

I'll bump the pizza thread (hint!) and add a little note that the "edit posts" feature has apparently been changed (or defaulted back?) to something like 15-20 minutes rather than an hour, which was already short enough for someone like myself who keeps forgetting to add salient points. ;)

Thanks again!

Re: Let's make a VERY useful stampboards CROWD FUNDING gesture!!

The edit window was my error .... have now changed it back to the one hour we always had, that any member gets to edit any post of theirs.

(Some boards have a ZERO option, to change any post made!)

The PREVIEW button is also there, that if used, allows all members to view their posts BEFORE it is added. :!:

Thanks for keeping Yuriy in Pizzas folks .... he needs it, as we are doing a lot of work quietly behind the scenes right now!

I've rolled out a couple of backend server upgrades. You (hopefully) shouldn't see anything different up front, but if there are errors showing anywhere, please let me know.

Next coming down the pipeline is a database upgrade, and then we can get that new search backend up!

Many thanks Yuriy .. we are now on the very latest phpBB platform version, 3.5.5 !

One issue, that might be connected with what you are working on with search back end, is that online searches here right now show this error message -

Search failed: connection to localhost:9312 failed (errno=111, msg=Connection refused)

I'm sorry if this has already been reported, but these 2 search bars also show the same message.

Sorry about that; directly related to the above maintenance and I didn't notice.

There is a cron that runs every three minutes and adds any new post to the search index (the process isn't "live" for performance reasons). That same script also tests to make sure that the search is working, and sends me an email if it's not for some reason. If the whole site is down, it happens to detect that too.

Well, when I did the maintenance a few days ago, both the search and cron processes were rudely killed by the system. Found this in the log:

Code: Select all

[Fri Jan 21 15:12:01.677 2022] [25954] rotating index: all indexes done
[Fri Jan 21 15:13:20.726 2022] [25947] watchdog: main process 25948 killed cleanly with SIGKILL, shutting down
And, of course, if the cron isn't running, then it doesn't send me any emails saying things are down. Apologies.

I just rebooted the server, and everything came right back up as it's scripted to do.

Hi Yuriy,

Did this issue also affect board emails?

I haven't been receiving board emails and I don't believe my board emails are being received by the recipient.

Cheers

No, that would be entirely unrelated. The whole emailing setup needs to be overhauled from the ground up; the site is just too large and sending too many emails for the default setup to work properly.

Let me see if I can figure out why it's currently not working.

Thanks to everyone who has sent pizza money! It is certainly appreciated, and does provide me with the ability to dedicate more time to working on the site.

So emailing from the server seems to be working fine. On the other hand, it looks like gmail has blacklisted the server. Such blocks are usually temporary, and one thing that can be done to help is adding the

Code: Select all

admin[AT]stampboards.com
email address to your whitelist in GMail. If enough people do this, it will hopefully raise the "trust index" of the emails enough to remove the block.

I am investigating what I can do from the tech side, but these things are usually pretty tough to rectify.

Marshalrusty Thanks for fixing the search issue !

Regarding the email issue, it is better to create a DMARC record, just a suggestion which I think may prevent the ip from being blacklisted again.
