Thanks for the input Map.

I will dig around for my cards and letters towards the end of the thread and perhaps these will lead to a review.
Always good to seethe stamps doing their job.

Nöo (Nüggen)
Pernau
Rakvere (Wesenberg)
Festung Lorient

Local stamps Lithuania (Alsedzschen, Panevezys,Zarasai, Ukmerge.
Macedonia

Pleskow (Russia)
Leningrad

Any one with examples please show.

SG confined German Occupation issues to:

Just showing some sheets I have in my many lots from the catalog numbers just described.

The letters are a terrific touch, showing how things looked from the PO. Thanks maptrekker & 60366!

As a note, there ARE FAKE CANCELS that have meandered into collections. The 2006 BLUM case from Germany is the most complex & the forger dumped them on the market for decades. The case + A LIST of the numerous fakes can be found here:
https://www.filatelia.fi/forgeries/blum.html

Below is one I found a while back with a partial list from the 2006 case.

Waiting for the next installment.

Excellent contributions.

Part sheets, or sheets, always put stamps in better context as to how they were produced.

Tomorrow I will scan in the Poland part. I like the robustness of the stamps´designs in general.

Mi 25 "60" on 55Gr for reference.
IMG_0682 (2).JPG
Just noticing I don't have a Mi. 14, only an Mi. 22 with the "24" overprint. Perhaps sellers have been getting wise to the variants?! I think I picked-up my little set without looking carefully & in a hurry. The least optimal conditions for making a purchase. The "robustness" of the overprint probably overwhelmed my senses (ha). I remember spending around $1.US, for the three below, some time ago...& I thought that was pricy!

John - Keep the Michel's catalog, et al, variants & values coming. I think they will make this thread THE one source for everything. Extremely useful!

German Occupation of Poland postage stamps. 25th June, Mi.110-Mi.112. Hitler Heads Mi 83 to Mi.85 with lighter (different) shades and form.
I am not sure where I am with this.

I have compared the relevant stamps and these have different characteristics.

I am not sure whether the smooth versions on left are 1942 versions or ones on right are 1942 versions.

One way is correct to get to the Mi.110-112.

Help needed to solve this.

I enlarged area around the ear to bring out the distinct engraving (bottom ear for each stamp refers to stamps on right). Top ears are for stamps on left.

Looking at the engraving for most earlier versions (look like stamps on right) I would assess that stamps in scan to the left are Mi.110 to 112.

Fun anyway.

Left stamps are photogravure and perforated 14.

Definitely Mi 110-112.

The ones on the right are engraved, perforated 12½ and Mi 83A-85A,

Magnificent job John & great sheets 60366!
Some of my favorite stamps from that period of the old cities & buildings. They deserve an uncancelled view :) .

Side-by-sides of the Copernicus issues. Notice the red (typically higher value) has the vertical "overprint" looking date details. I should pick up a sheet someday. Those border details are a great touch on all of them, especially the Mi 125's. See below:

OldArchitect. Sweet additions.

Poland deserves a special place in phIlately.

Stamps from 1939-45 from Poland literally ´stamped`on with black imperial symbols, as was the country stamped on.

Just have to read the Wiki noted to cry.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_of_Poland

Also from a Wiki

Around 6 million Polish citizens perished during World War II: about one fifth of the pre-war population.

Most were civilian victims of the war crimes and crimes against humanity during the occupation by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.

The official Polish government report on war damages prepared in 1947 put Poland's war dead at 6,028,000; 3.0 million ethnic Poles and 3.0 million Jews not including losses of Polish citizens from the Ukrainian and Belarusian ethnic groups.

This figure was disputed when the communist system collapsed by the Polish historian Czesław Łuczak who put total losses at 6.0 million; 3.0 million Jews, 2.0 million ethnic Poles, and 1.0 million Polish citizens from the other ethnic groups not included in the 1947 report on war damages.

In 2009 the Polish government-affiliated Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) published the study "Polska 1939–1945. Straty osobowe i ofiary represji pod dwiema okupacjami" (Poland 1939-1945).

Human Losses and Victims of Repression Under the Two Occupations) that estimated Poland's war dead at between 5.6 and 5.8 million Poles and Jews, including 150,000 during the Soviet occupation.

Poland's losses by geographic area include about 3.5 million within the borders of present-day Poland, and about two million in the Polish areas annexed by the Soviet Union.

Contemporary Russian sources include Poland's losses in the Polish areas annexed by the Soviet Union with Soviet war dead. In Poland this is viewed as inflating Soviet casualties at Poland's expense. Today's scholars of independent Poland believe that 1.8 to 1.9 million Polish civilians (non-Jews) and 3 million Polish Jews were victims of German Occupation policies and the war, resulting in a total population loss of 23% to 28% compared to Poland's pre-war population in 1939.

Meanwhile the stamps were printed.

John

Any comments for the skull overprints from Bohemia and Mahren?

bm skulls.png

skulls copy enl.png
"Deutschlands Verderber" or "Destroyer of Germany" is the overprint message.

I am hunting down the other various overprinted stamps I have following end of Geman rule (skulls, black outs, desecrations in general). Most tend to be forgeries but you never know.

John~~
We are travelling through dark waters with this thread. These stamps were designed to camouflage the toll of human lives that can never be forgotten. Genocide, organized by history's greatest criminals. EVERYONE everywhere should familiarize themselves thoroughly with this period in time so it never happens again. Stamps help bring one closer to the reality of history. It's quite surprising, & alarming, to me to see that so little of this era is taught in schools here in the States. The US (maybe other nations?) needs to improve the curriculum & stop worrying they'll offend someone. It's an enormous disservice to everyone & obscures the direction of humanity for future generations. Ignorance is not a strategy!

The Powerpoint link on Bohemia & Moravia occupation stamps is a terrific first step for the uninformed.

Those postwar overprints on occupation stamps were apparently produced by local postal authorities. Finding genuine examples has to be a daunting task! If there ever was a place to view these obliterations, it is here on SB. As you stated, though, lots of forgeries (ugh).

I'll keep looking through my "piles" to see what, if any, overprints I might have to post. Keep-up the fantastic work :)

This dienstpost (official) cover mailed Kiev Ukraine 15.7.1943 to Halle Germany. Envelope used was a turned / inverted copy of a atlas map. Rated at 60 pf and UN over-printed German stamps used. Was the practice of using un overprinted stamps tolerated or was it officially sanctioned, does anybody know.

60366 let us have the Sudentenland thread.

I posted some interesting covers/card/cancels is another thread where they were mainly identified as from Sudentenland.

Maptrekker has a good interest in Sudentenland and he identified most of the postmarks I posted.

Thread is:

Here is a taster as shown in the thread (´page` 3 second half of thread for bulk of cancels).

I am now looking for the actual examples, as they have disappeared, for now, into the general mass.

And other cover with Maptrekker´s comment.

Glasstadt-Steinschönau. Glass Town of Steinschönau refers to the glass factory there. Steinschönau is the German name for the Czechoslovakian town of Kamenický Šenov. Böhmen is replaced with Sudetengau in the return address. Bohemia was split into German-speaking and Czech-speaking parts. The northern German-speaking part was incorported into Germany as part of the Reichsgau Sudetenland or Sudetengau as it appears on the return address. The rest of Bohemia was combined with Moravia and incorporated into the German Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.

I think by mid 1943 Germany was much more concerned about a great many things out east, even though they were slowly exiting the Ukraine after soviet advances. Though, I have seen plenty of stamps without overprints. I think the question might only be answerable by someone from that era. If anyone does have an answer, perhaps it lies in one of the terrific list of threads just put down by johnrcrow.

Thanks John for the awesome list of related threads!

Holy cats, what a thread! You folks maptrekker, 60366, etc., have done an amazing amount of research. My expertise is with ANCIENT artifacts - much harder to forge pottery & handwriting. Though, I agree John, the cover examples you posted a year ago display beautiful penmanship. I can remember being graded in school for such things  !

I hope I can offer-up a smidgen to add to this ongoing process :o

Hi Old Architect.

Certainly the German postage stamps area offers one of the widest ranges for study.

The pre-Empire, all those ancient Baden, Bavaria, Hannover, Prussia, Sachsen etc., etc., and the various Reichs and the overseas and the Danzig´s and Memel´s and WWI and WWII occupations. Of course the output post-1945 too. History unfolding page by page.

Cancels, letters, cards, blocks and not forgetting the myriads of flaws (some if us like to search these out).

I find it interesting anyway and want to share with others what I find.

So plenty more potential threads.

I hope the Sudentenland one springs up soon.

One ´problem` is that searching in Google etc., now seems to bring our threads on Stampboards more and more.

So then a success for Stampboards and its contributors. The platform is certainly a front runner in widening the knowledge on stamps worldwide, so well done Glen for providing the vehicle for information exchange.

Some great Sudetenland items shown. I will tag my contribution on.
Firstly a couple of very “philatelic” items.
Postcard mailed Asch ( cz AS) 30.9. 1938 to Hamburg with mixed frankings of German and Czechoslovakian stamps. This is one day before Germany “officially” invaded Sudetenland although members of the Sudenten German Freikorps had proclaimed a “Free State of Asch” a few days before.
Card endorsed with cachet the famous line “ peace in our time 30th September 1938.”

Looks like cover re addressed in England and stamps to 1 1/2 d applied and postmarked Tisbury Salisbury 25th October 1938.

Ah- our friend Karl Hennig- creator of many a philatelic item- even after 1945.

Love the "Not worth a Penny" cover!

Here is one (not from my collection) featuring Churchill- in this case it was literally "not worth a penny" as postage due was applied!

A few years back I was lucky enough to win at auction the collection of Travelling Post Offices in German-Occupied Sudentenland by Tony Goodbody and Cyril Kidd. They produced a book of the same name and I’ll show most of the covers and cancels contained in it.
