Ongoing QUIZ † Can you identify this stamp?

Post by lesbootman »

I Posted the following challenge on Ubobu R. O.'s quiz of the day thread and wonder if it is worthy of it's own thread.

The Challenge: Identify this stamp. I've obscured the inscriptions and denomination but left the design intact.

Image

I'd like country of issue, year of issue, denomination and the reason for the commemorative issue.

Please don't cheat by using internet image searches.

Using a stamp catalogue is perfectly OK though.

It might be a case of asking questions to identify the continent and then the country first and proceeding from there, unless of course someone recognises it straight away.

The answer to the original Quiz was Uruguay's 1959 issue to promote tourism and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the resort town of Punta del Este.

The only rider I would suggest is that the stamp chosen has to have been issued by a recognised postal authority, to have been valid for postage and to qualify for listing in the major stamp catalogues.

It would then be a case of whoever identifies the previous stamp has the opportunity to post the next one.

Three incorrect (all apart from the birds).

Japan is closer than Hungary though.

Yep, South Korea seem to have released several pairs of stamps in similar designs depicting various birds around that time.

We've often had Oyster Catchers nesting on the roof of the industrial unit where I work - which was probably why I plumped for that one. They make a right racket when they are rearing their chicks!

Identify the stamp #3
SAAR
1956

German territory of the Saar. As a border region contested between France and Germany, the Saar has a somewhat complicated philatelic history. (Note that although the state is now known as Saarland, English-speaking philatelists universally use "Saar".)

You guessed that quickly without using an image search. Very impressive, well done.

I thought it might be trickier as I'd used a stamp from a "dead" issuing authority.

It is indeed Saar's 1956 stamp day issue depicting the television tower. I had posted a copy of the stamp on my philatelic flights of fancy thread. It was printed by Courvoisier in Switzerland.

So, it is over to you to post the next stamp Elton_Goa_India or to pass the baton on if you prefer. The choice is yours.
