India 5 Rupee coin with missing detail one side. Fake or Real?

Post by vijaysingh »

Hi Stamp boarders,

I have minimal idea in numismatics, I do have a small coin and notes collection, but never came across the one as below.

I got this coin in a grocery store as tender exchange. Not sure if it is fake or it slipped through the minting process. Any help is appreciated.

Appears to be a mistrike.

However can be easily faked from either grinding a real coin, or a fake of one side only!

Could be a fake "coin" to use in vending machines.

If the dimensions and weigt are exactly the same as a real 5 rupee coin some older and not so sensitive machines can accept them.

Thanks Sheriff and Stewie for your insights. The coin is missing both the sides.

Why does the subject line say “one side” then?

Its known as a planchet (raised edge blank coin).

It usually comes from part way through the process of coin manufacture.
Blank - Planchet - Reeding - Strike - Polish

As its not a mis-strike or error, they are not terrifically valuable.

About $1 seems to buy many variants (the face value of the coin "you got it for" was only about 7 cents!!).

Here's about 18 seconds illustrating this type ....

Its one of those things you file in your collection under "novelty / show me".

I had a strong feeling that this coin would be a great conversation piece and nothing more.

With expert comments I stand vindicated.

Thanks for sharing valuable information ViccyVFU.

Blank planchets (no detail on either side) are fairly common "quality control errors" -- they shouldn't get out, but sometimes do -- and worth a few dollars.

A coin struck on only one side would be really interesting and require some serious investigation; I'm not sure how such a thing would legitimately be made by modern coining methods, except as some kind of die test where a blank die was intentionally used on one side.

Hi, Vijay, if you get another from the same store, you'll know it's a fake.
